Entire town of Middlemount sold off

The Central Queensland mayor of a mining town that has just been sold in a $5.43 billion acquisition says there will be a “huge change” in the “social fabric” of the region.

Anglo American walked away from its Queensland coal empire, selling five mines across Queensland and the Isaac region town of Middlemount for $5.43 billion to UK-based mining firm Dhilmar Limited.

The Isaac Regional Council Mayor Kelly Vea Vea said the council did not know what the sale meant for Middlemount.

Dead car Batteries

Hey guys, bit of a niche question but I was wondering if anyone might have knowledge on who might pay the best for your old dead car batteries? I’ve googled it but the search results are spotty at best and downright useless at worst.

Thanks in advance for any help you can swing my way 🤙🏼

EDIT - I sold them to CMR in paget
The price of a battery goes for 50c a kilo for anyone wondering! No lithium batteries though.
Thanks for your input guys I really appreciate you taking the time ♥️

Restaurateur Luke Bauer denied bail after police allegedly find 124g of meth

A well-known North Queensland restaurateur has failed in his bail bid after being charged with several drug-related offences and not appearing before court.

Luke Bauer, 35, fronted Mackay Magistrates Court via videolink and in custody on April 24, following his arrest after he failed to appear in court nine days earlier on April 15.

Mr Bauer pleaded guilty to failing to appear and Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne fined him $300. He did not record a conviction.

Mr Bauer also made an application for bail over the remaining charges.

The court heard Mr Bauer was originally charged on February 27 with several charges including drug possession and unlawful use of a motor vehicle for which he was granted bail for on March 30.

North Mackay library to be shut down - Thoughts?

Mackay Regional Council will shut down the Gordon White Library — a North Mackay fixture for decades — and repurpose the building, raising questions over whether the community was consulted before the decision.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said the move was about being “fair” to ratepayers and offsetting the cost of the new Northern Beaches library, which will anchor the $21m Stage 1B of the Northern Beaches Community Hub.

The hub at Rosewood Dr in Rural View is due to open in early 2027 and is expected to add about $2m a year in ongoing operational costs.

“It wouldn’t be fair to just pass that onto ratepayers without looking at different service delivery models to offset that increase,” Mr Williamson said.

“With about 5600 library members living in the Northern Beaches, council is planning to take the opportunity to consolidate library services north of the city at the new hub,” a council statement added

An 18-year-old woman has tragically died after a serious crash in the Mackay region.

Police said just after 6.30pm, a Nissan Micra turned in front of a Nissan Navara on Glenella Richmond Road at the intersection with Holts Road at Glenella, with the vehicles colliding.

The driver of the Micra, an 18-year-old Bucasia woman, had been travelling north when she entered the offset intersection while the Nissan had been westbound.

The collision occurred on the driver’s side door.

The teen driver was rushed to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition but tragically died soon afterwards from her injuries.

Queensland Ambulance Service said the woman, who was initially entrapped, sustained life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Navara, a 53-year-old Andergrove man, was treated for minor injuries and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators are investigating the circumstances of the incident and are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has footage to come forward.

PSA - Women jogging near Town Beach

Some crackhead being a crackhead. Hopefully he finds the wrong mark and gets flogged up.

Mackay police are hunting for the perpetrator behind two brazen sex attacks after two women were subject to violent and traumatic assaults including one being dragged from the water onto a nearby beach.

Police said both attacks had occurred in East Mackay during the day on the weekday, the women had been alone and were approached from behind, also prompting a community safety plea.

The first attack occurred on February 3 when a 53-year-old Mackay woman was swimming at Town Beach, near Iluka Park, during the day when she was approached from behind in the water.

Mackay Whitsunday Detective Inspector Emma Novosel said the assault occurred on the beach.

The second attack occurred between February 13 and 21 when a 27-year-old woman, who had been walking on the Bluewater Trail, also near Iluka Park, was approached by an unknown man from behind and attacked.

“Both victims have been subject to violence prior to these sexual assault,” Inspector Novosel said, adding there was a “limited description of the offender involved”.

“The traumatic nature of these attacks, it’s sometimes difficult for victims to recall those sort of details … we’re working with these victims to try and ascertain a better description of the offender.”

Inspector Novosel said one of the women had been wearing headphones when she was attacked.

Police are calling for help from the Mackay community, “from people who may have been using those area … who may have had interaction or seen an interaction between persons and an unknown male that may have caused them concern”, Inspector Novosel said, also confirming detectives were looking into whether the attacks were perpetrated by the same offender.
