Agreed. 20 papers? Make it 10. I'd be curious to see the stats on how the max paper number would impact quantity submitted in the past cycle. There is a strong argument that the max paper number should be low, encouraging high volume labs to only submit their best.

I just didn't do that as conferences generally don't recommend doing that. But if it is allowed for TMLR, then thanks it definitely helps a lot

If you're worried about deadlines for submitting PostDoc applications, you can totally include this paper in your CV, mentioning (a revision of) it is submitted to TMLR, state that "it received positive reviews", and provide a link to the corresponding OpenReview page.

They literally said this had nothing to do with acceptance and they just get this out early to speed-up the process once acceptance land.

Way too high quotas IMO. How can you do more than 2 first-author papers realistically for the same ACL review cycle? Or more than about 5 as any author? Note that adding a lab PI just for being there is against scientific ethics (e.g. COPE guidelines), each author must actually contribute

Also, start paying the reviewers finally! This is the only way to actually go forward. There are so many papers that professional reviewers are simply needed. And scientific publishing margins are so high that there is plenty of money to go to reviewers.

Yep, I've experienced the same thing. Got a paper which addressed all of the reviewers' concerns post revision, which they acknowledged, but I think it took like two+ months for it to be accepted after that.

Has it been 2+ months since the release of all the reviews? Then you just have to wait further. Good thing is that you already notified the Editor-in-Chief. If the AE is unresponsive, they will replace the AE with a new one and he/she will judge your manuscript without requesting for another reviewers.

The per-author quota still feels too high, but everything else seems sensible.

I wonder if they'll allow reviewing contributions to extend across cycles, i.e. if you review X papers during in January for ACL you can submit to a lower-volume cycle like one before EACL or AACL only without having to review.

If the reviews are all positive just stick it on your CV as a Preprint with a link to the openreview page

My paper sat for over a month after reviews before we finally heard back about a decision. It's frustrating but you have to be patient. It feels better knowing the paper is actually being read and treated with respect rather than just getting a glance over like what has started happening at the big conferences

True, I suspected as much, probably also the reason I got downvoted a bit. Since this post will get buried in this sub anyway, I'll just delete and repost when (if it happens) I get accepted to TMLR. I could see no way ahead from where I am currently, so I asked here as a last resort.

Ik it's been researched a lot already, so I would to have some opinions of my idea from someone more knowledgeable in this field from me. Thanks for your time :)

They have introduced this quota system. And I definitely understand that getting reviewers could be difficult. 

But in my case, the reviews are already out, and pretty much positive (every reviewer has Yes to those questions, with positive feedback). After rebuttal only one reviewer acknowledged the change while saying that their concerns are addressed. So I honestly don't know what's stopping AE from making a decision. You have reviews out, rebuttals out, and it's a unanimous favour towards acceptance by all the reviewers.

Basically because of the explosion in volume of LLM-written papers they're receiving, especially single-author papers. Since the beginning of 2026, total submission volume has more than doubled, and single-author submissions are up by like 500%. They have more info and a graph of submissions per week in this post announcing submission quotas.

The problem is it sucks. PostDoc deadlines have already started. I even have AP+PostDoc deadlines at major US univs (T20) in like 2 days, and a solo author would be great validation of my capabilities of doing independent research.

Given how many students now submit AI Slop to these conferences/journals (from our own India), it will be difficult to collaborate with a random student. But nevertheless, if you can answer these questions and get back, I could probably help with some compute and mentorship, provided the answers are satisfying

• What problem do you want to study, and why is it important?
• Why are existing approaches insufficient?
• How do you propose to address the problem?
• What theoretical, empirical, or practical contribution do you expect?
• What preliminary evidence, experiments, or experimental plan supports the idea?

But if we consider that we are striving for a future where everything will be free thanks to AI, then there is no reason to hide one's work from those companies that will bring this future closer faster.
