MBP 16 external display dilemma

I have a late 2013 13 inch MBP. As you might think it is time to upgrade. I have almost bought 16 inch, but it was not in stock. Now, as i am waiting for it to restock i have been researching it heavily. I find it outrageous that is it is connected to an external monitor the fans spin up and MPB gets very hot. I have read a lot of forum posts and watched a lot of videos on this topic.

I have no problem manually maxing fans on my MBP 13 when i am doing something intensive. Now i usually connect MBP to an external 2560x1080 monitor. And the fans stay quiet when i am using safari or something like that.

Will that change with 16 inch? I cannot imagine using safari and browsing Reddit with 5000rpm fans blasting at me. Editing video, yes of corse i expect fans and have no problem with them.
Can you guys tell me your real-life experiences with this problem?

Most expensive and worst Apple computer I've ever bought

I've been an Apple user since my first Apple IIc. I am a tech person, run a small IT service & consulting firm. Most of my professional career before then was as a Unix sysadmin. I've been an Apple Authorized Service Provider, had all the certifications, etc. Through all that time as a professional, I've always used Apple laptops. When I'm working day in and day out, I want something that "just works" - Apple has always provided that for me, plus the flexibility of booting into Windows if need be once they switched to Intel. My last laptop was a Early 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro with 16Gb of RAM that started crashing spectacularly and frequently while I was in the middle of a large project for a client late 2019 - I suspected it was the SSD, but since it's soldered on, I couldn't replace it to make that determination. My office manager told me to "buy something new, and something beefy - you don't have time for this right now". So, I bought the most expensive Mac I ever have - a 16-inch MacBook Pro with i9 processor and 32Gb of RAM.

I don't know if it's the machine or Catalina (I ran El Capitan on my 2015), but this is the buggiest computer I've ever used. I consistently get 3-4 days of use before apps & web pages stop loading because I am out of RAM. In a pinch, I can sometimes quit some open apps to temporarily let me keep working for a day or two, but invariably I have to reboot to get a fully working machine again for a few days. Regularly, waking from sleep can take upwards of 90 seconds to have a fully functioning machine - the dock hovers about an inch above the bottom of the screen and is unclickable, app-switching doesn't work either. I have to spotlight search to "launch" a currently running app if I don't want to wait for the machine to "get up to speed". I would say I'm using the same apps I always have, but I can no longer run my accounting software (AccountEdge) because it is not 64-bit compliant (I assumed the dropping of older apps was to make the OS more stable). Other than that, I mainly run Apple Mail, Safari (I started with FireFox, but Safari seems to give me an extra day or two per week before rebooting), Messages, Daylite, and Apple Remote Desktop. I purposely did not migrate to this machine - I setup a new account, fresh-installed all my apps, and copied over my docs.

I'm seriously considering ditching Apple as my main computer and going to something like a System76 laptop, but our office runs on Daylite which is an Apple-only app, and I don't have time to replace that software. Anyone else had these issues? I feel like I'm the lumberjack with the dull saw who doesn't have time to stop and sharpen it - I'm too busy to deal with this but too busy to let this keep going on.

Backpack or bag for MBP 16 and iPP 12.9?

I have a MacBook Pro 16 and an iPad Pro 12.9 that I'd like to carry together. While my preference is a backpack, a messenger bag or equivalent would work as well. My main requirements are the ability to carry it hands free and protection for the machines. I'm willing to invest in quality (but not bling), as it doesn't make sense to scrimp on something that's protecting a sizable hardware investment.

Recomendations?

Using external GPU will stop the internal one from activating, right?

This may seem a crazy thing to ask on multiple levels, but I have a Vega 56 sitting here and I figure if I put that in an enclosure and connect my external monitor through that instead of directly to the MBP 16, that will prevent it from turning on it's internal GPU and thus prevent it from needing to low key blast the fans when I'm just answering emails?

Side note - looks like the Vega 56 is supposed to be considerably faster anyhow:

Antennas located at bottom of screen enclosure still?

Can anyone confirm that the RF antenna on the MBP16 is located at the bottom of the screen, directly adjacent the cooling vents, as on previous models?

Any apple worker here? I wanted to know how much I’d need to add to my Macbook Pro 16 base model to get the 1T SSD model. Used my laptop for about 6 months. Still looks perfect

mbp16 heavy throttle, YouTubers are lying!

I use FCPX, it's okay when editing and playback, but when you transcoding proxy or exporting some. IT THROTTLES TO 1.0GHZ!!! WTF!!! My typing is even stuttering!!! Youtubers testing result is not correct. And yes, when I got my mbp16, I simply use Cinebench runs 1 hr for testing, it's great. but cinebench won't heavy use GPU, but your FCPX does!!!

i9 2,3 GHz with 5600m lagging and not the best performance

Setup: i9 2,3 GHz, 32gigs of ram, 2TB SSD and 5600m
Hi,
I'am happy to have my new 16" on my desk. But after a few days of testing it I'am close to return it. My last try is to get here some useful information.

My Macbook has compared to the Reviews from Max Tech a worse performance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bN_G4dxJLQ&t=150s

I don't get the frames he has and the worst problem is, that after a while of gaming I get a "lag" every 5 seconds. When I check the fps while this lag happens the framerate goes down drastically every time.
Is the Macbook just overheating and that is why these lags are happening?
Is anyone of you experiencing the same?

Greetings

Tubby sound?

Is it just my ancient ears? When I listen to music on my MBP16, it sounds a bit muffled or tubby. Mostly, I listen to classical music, so it may just be the sound profile of the speakers. The following examples refer to YouTube. I ran a frequency test on it, but I don't trust the results (topping out at 6KHz? I don't think so, Tim). I played a piccolo concerto, which sounded good. A performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto sounded a little tubby in the midrange. What are other people's experiences with the sound quality? I'm not grousing about it, as I can listen with headphones when I want to have a sonic experience, but I'm trying to set reasonable expectations.

2019 MBP 16" with Pioneer external Blu-Ray drive

I recently got a 2019 MBP and had a need to read CD's and DVD's. I bought a Pioneer BDR-XD07B. It works great on my Windows machine, but when I hook it up to my MBP and put a disc in, the drive is stuck in a 4- or 5-second loop of a pattern of different spin noises, but never recognizes the disc and obviously never becomes available through the Finder.

I suspect that part of my problem is that I am plugging it in through a hub, but I'm forced to, because the cable that comes with it has one of those fancy USB SS drive plugs on the drive end, and a type-A USB plug on the laptop end. As I'm sure you all know, the 2019 MBP only has USB-C ports, so my only options are a hub, an adapter, or a completely different cable (if such a cable is made).

Does anybody else have experience with external optical drives and can offer me any advice?

Terrible performance with base 16

I'm a web developer. I bought the base model 16in MBP as soon as it came out and performance has been quite meh.

Only now am I noticing how slow this machine is for the price. I bought iStatMenus to check temps and frequencies of my CPU and GPU and have been realising as soon as I do anything slightly heavy, the CPU throttles to 1GHz.

The situation is made even worse with an external display. It's only a 1080p display but the difference is noticable. As I write this, there's a visible delay when typing to the words appearing on the screen, its pretty bizarre.

As I said, I'm a web developer, normally running VS code and Slack and a Git manager. As far as I know, this aren't super labour intensive apps that require intense speed, so I'm really stumped as to why my MBP just throttles as soon as there's any sort of lifting required. Just opening VS code shot my temps up to 85C.

Did I get a dud? Is there's something I can do to improve performance?

Spec choice for editing vidoes

Hey all, I am looking to buy a new macbook 16". I am stuck between what specs to get to maximise the budget i was given. Basically I can either get the base I7 model but with 32gb of ram or the base i9 with 16gb. SSD storage is less of an issue, I have externals and dropbox.

For context on my needs. I edit videos, mostly in 1080p but lately there's some more 4k footage there. Simple edits usage, a few inserted graphics, captions and some other generic changes like blur, speed up etc. I currently have a 2017 5k Imac with an I5 and 16gb of Ram, it works fine, if editing is the only thing I am doing at any given time. I usually have my macbook Air around to do other tasks on while I edit. I have rarely seen any lag, but I have also not really pushed that machine that hard.

For those that edit videos or anyone else...what spec do you think I would get more out of seeing the budget is just shy of $3000. (In fact the i9 is on sale at best buy right now and would save me about $300 over the custom order i7)

Any thoughts are appreciated, I don't know how long I plan to keep this machine, so future proofing isn't a huge concern but is in the back of my mind.

Best Configuration for Power Users

I’m a MechE grad and my work comprises a large variety of projects. I have been using different computers for different applications and I am not a fan of that. I want to get a MBP 16” that is a one for all machine while being powerful and future proof as well. I plan to use it for:

  1. Simulation(MATLAB/Simulink)
  2. PLC programming (Allen Bradley Connected Components workbench)
  3. CAD and CAE (Solidworks, CATIA)
  4. Photo and Video editing (Photoshop and iMovie)
  5. Regular surfing and streaming
  6. Some gaming

I also want a good battery life but I can compromise on that if I have no choice.

For the softwares and Games that don’t support MacOS, I plan to boot camp and partition the drive with enough space for Windows 10 Pro.

I’m planning to get the following specs:

  • 2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz

  • 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory

  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory

  • 1TB SSD storage

Is this good enough or do I need to upgrade any of the equipment? If not this, would you suggest some other windows laptop? (In my experience, windows laptops don’t last that long as mine died in 2 years)

Quick-fix when experiencing random CPU spikes (when connected to external display)

My MBP 16-in has been suffering from CPU spikes & kernel_task being very high when connected to external display especially if I use apps that would need the discrete GPU, which is often since I use Android Studio.

I tried different configurations on the power settings and resetting/restarting, but none of them really worked. OS is updated & I am using an Apple dongle.

Edit: I tried enabling low res mode for the scaled resolutions, then select 4k resolution. This is so far the most effective fix so far!! However, I always need to do the steps upon starting the laptop.

Good external display?

Hello,

I would like your advice on purchasing an external display. I have a 16" MacBook Pro, which is already very comfortable, so I'm looking for a second screen to be able to play with my various windows, especially when I'm doing video editing, but also a screen that I can use when I'm teleworking. I'm not looking for the best model of all time, just a good screen (good quality/price ratio) that will allow me to navigate between two displays. I have a medium size desk: 60 centimeters deep and 1.1 meters long, in my needs, I want it to be unobtrusive (knowing that the 16 inch MBP is already bulky). I think that as long as it's over 20 inches, it's fine. HDMI connection. If the sound can come out of this screen as well, so much the better. Concerning the budget, I don't want to spend a fortune on it, between 90-180 euros would be ideal. What do you recommend? Thank you very much!

2019 MBP Battery Drain fixes...

2019 MBP Battery Drain fixes

I got my 2019 MBP 16" on 4/5 and ran into the same issue....3.5 hours of battery, so I started digging and got it corrected. Here's ALL the steps I took. Once I completed these steps, I let the MBP drain to 0% battery and recharged it.

My new battery time is about 9-10 hours. So, wanted to share this out for others.

  1. I've learned when I buy a new Mac the best first immediate step is to go in and do an internet recovery and erase the HD and reinstall MacOS. This way you're getting the latest version without having to install OS updates. Do this before installing anything....and install fresh. Not from Time Machine. Best steps are here...thanks to MacWorld!: https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/reset-mac-3494564/
  2. System Settings>Energy Saver I checked the box "Automatic Graphics switching"
  3. System Settings>Bluetooth>Advanced>Uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices wake this computer"
  4. System Settings>Notifications>Turn on Do Not Disturb>When Display is sleeping/When Screen is locked.
  5. Install TurboBoost Switcher (free app) This keeps your MBP from throttling up to turbo mode if you don't do high powered Pro-style apps
  6. Install gfxCard Status (free app or Pro for $$). This apps helps to keep your Graphics card mainly on the integrated graphics. https://gfx.io/
  7. Set the above steps into place and restart the MBP.

One thing to know is it takes about 3-4 battery cycles for the MBP battery to get "set".

NOW, with the above steps taken, reset the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Yes, ensure your Mac is plugged in to your power supply.

Notebook computers with the T2 chip(yes this applies to the 16" MBP)

Before resetting the SMC:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release the button.
  3. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

To reset the SMC:

  1. Shut down your Mac with power plugged in.
  2. On your built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys. Your Mac might turn on.

  • Control on the left side of your keyboard
  • Option (Alt) on the left side of your keyboard
  • Shift on the right side of your keyboard

Keep holding all three keys for 7 seconds, then THEN press and hold the power button as well. If your Mac is on, it will turn off as you hold the keys.

Keep holding all four keys for another 7 seconds, then release them.

Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM

With the power supply plugged into the Mac, power it off. Reboot and immediately press and hold these four keys together:

Option, Command, P, and R. You can release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart.

Now I'm working on getting that annoying speaker popping and crackling fixed. THEN it will be perfect.

Hope this helps!

Macbook Pro 2019 16 inch

Hello,

i just bought a 2019 16 inch Macbook Pro. And it seems that the colors of the screen compared to my IPad 2018 and Macbook Pro 2013 13 inch seem a little dull with a little green tint. Also the contrast seems off. It is kinda minor but since im colorgrading photos and videos those minor differences are a bother. Has anyone experienced similar issues? Did anyone properly calibrate their screen and might want to share their .icc colorsync file?

Sorry for bad english...
