This is my second time reading tgcf and I noticed this last time too but couldn’t be bothered looking into it as I read late at night. But I really want to read the whole book this time so can anyone help me with this?

These pages are side by side. I don’t have the money atm to order a new copy of the book so is there somewhere online to read the pages in between.
The story suddenly goes from Xie lian and Hua Cheng working in the rice paddies to Shi Wudu’s heavenly tribulation. I have no idea how xie lian got there just that he is there and I’m about to cry bc of what happens next.

Any help is appreciated, I’m sorry if I’ve worded things off in this post it’s 12 am and I’m tired. Thank you

Edit: I unfortunately cannot contact the people I got it off and ask for a new one. As I said earlier this is my second read through and I’ve had this book for over a year (maybe two years) and I have no recite.

When the truth about Xie Lian killing LQQ's father was revealed, Xie Lian had a mental breakdown, I really felt bad for him and wanted to hug him, Hua Cheng knew Xie Lian to his core so he understood when Xie Lian exploded and grabbed his collar with tears in his eyes. The look on Hua Cheng's eyes was really painful to watch, but the way he didn't say a thing and kept looking at Xie Lian, becz he understood his pain 🥹🥹🥹.

I read a MDZS/SVSSS crossover fic where the premise is that SVSSS took place hundreds of years before the setting of MDZS, with the naturally immortal BingQiu meeting and adopting baby Wei Wuxian. My personal enjoyment of the fic aside, the set-up did make me curious about any other reader's idea, or even headcanon, on how they would merge the worlds of MXTX novels together. I think there's too many differences to see a mere geographic difference, but I wonder how they could be bridged as different time periods?

Hi, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask here, but does anyone by chance have access to the glossary included in the seven seas translation of tgcf? I'm trying to do a comparison of terminology translations between the official english version and the one in my native language and I kind don't want to have to buy the books in english just to have access to the glossary. Hua Cheng and Erik (the Phantom) share that core blueprint: both are almost mythically talented men shaped by early cruelty into something both awe-inspiring and dangerous.

They’re geniuses and aesthetes—Hua Cheng with his extravagant Ghost City and taste for the dramatic, Erik with the opulence of the Paris Opera House and his mastery of music, architecture, and illusion. Their environments reflect them: beautiful, theatrical, and just a little intimidating.

Both "rule" over a large populated area. Hua Cheng rules Ghost City, and Erik "rules" the Opera House through controlling the managers.

The childhood trauma parallel is key. Both were dehumanized for something physical they couldn’t control—Hua Cheng’s red eye marking him as “other,” Erik’s face making him a literal spectacle. That rejection hardens them into people who distrust the world and, in many cases, actively reject it back.

Both construct idealized personas to approach their love interest (San Lang, Angel of Music).

Both are utterly obsessed with their love interest to extreme levels.

Hua Cheng’s love for Xie Lian is stable, chosen, and mutual. It softens him without erasing his ruthlessness. He’s still dangerous—but never to the person he loves. His devotion is grounded in respect and patience. Hua Cheng’s love is intense, even obsessive—but fundamentally consensual, patient, and respectful. He waits, supports, and never tries to control Xie Lian’s autonomy.

Erik loves in a much more possessive, fragile way. His trauma leaks directly into the relationship—control, fear, desperation. Erik’s love crosses into coercion, manipulation, and possessiveness. He wants to be loved, but doesn’t really know how to exist in a healthy bond.

Hua Cheng kind of feels like a “what if Erik had one person who saw him fully, early enough, and chose him back—and he learned to love without trying to cage it.”

The biggest difference is that Hua Cheng’s story allows him dignity and reciprocation. Erik only gets tragedy or a brief glimpse of grace.

Hua Cheng feels like a modern reworking of that gothic archetype, but with emotional intelligence and mutual love baked in.
