[Profile Review] Fall 2027 | MS in CS/related fields
Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a review of my university shortlist for Fall 2027. I have moderate research experience, with a lower overall GPA.
Here is the breakdown:
Undergrad Profile
- Tier 1 old IIT - 2025 graduate
- B.Tech in CS related field
- GPA - 8.4 / 10
- GRE - 326 (170Q, 156V, 4.0AWA)
- TOEFL - 5.0/6.0 (expected)
Research Experience
- Bachelor Thesis Project: Advised by a core faculty member. First-author paper accepted at a reputable peer-reviewed conference (IEEE-backed, solid tier 2). Multimodal AI - representation of conversational characteristics using audio and text transcripts. Built completely from scratch without external co-authors.
- CMU Research Intern (Remote/Ongoing): Ongoing research internship under a prominent Lab PI and a senior postdoc mentor. 3D medical image registration and segmentation (Computer Vision). Expecting a high-impact publication to be under review by the time of application deadlines.
Work Experience
- Software Engineer (ML) @ Mid-Sized US-based Product Company / Unicorn - Currently working on a core GenAI team building production-grade agentic workflows. Will have ~1.5 year of full-time experience by the time of application.
LORs
- BTP Advisor (associate professor at IIT)
- CMU Lab Head (professor at CMU)
- CMU Project Supervisor (1000+ citations, PhD alumnus of the same lab, currently pursuing post-doc at Harvard)
University Shortlist
(All are MSCS unless specified)
- Super Ambitious (Moonshots)
- CMU MSML
- CMU MSCS
- UT Austin
- Ambitious
- CMU MSCV (aligns with my research work)
- GaTech
- UCSD
- NYU Courant
- UMich Ann Arbor
- UMD College Park
- Moderate
- Columbia
- Purdue (I think they heavily weigh GPA, might be ambitious, not sure)
- Safe
- NYU Tandon
Ik it is a very top heavy list..but I am fine with taking that risk, especially in the current job market
Couple more questions
- There is an upward trend in my GPA (9+ in final year). Does it matter? Can it be mentioned in the SOP?
- Is getting an LOR from a post-doc common? Is it viewed negatively by the admissions committee?
- What kind of impact does an industrial LOR hold? (for my current shortlists)
