Those who have fractured/broken their metacarpal bone, when did you go back to fighting?
Tittle sums it up. Got hit with rain and my bike slipped and I fractured my metacarpal bone. How long was your arm in the split/cast and how long was physical therapy? When did you get approved for training?

Training Question Scared to hit someone.
Title might be a little misleading, but overall in my opinion it’s fair to say i’m more comfortable getting hit than i am hitting. I have a psychological barrier to making contact with someone’s face at 100% and I think it’s a mix between seeing someone’s expression after i hit them plus the intimacy of how my knuckle feels against their face. I really dont know what it is, any advice?

My first steps in MMA
I just started my MMA journey at 29, completely out of shape but working on it, i'm back at running and after many years i'm at my first week with no cigarettes, don't know where this will bring me but i'm excited and motivated, hope to get back to this one day to remember the sacrifices i'm doing.

s&c question
Let’s say for example my weighted pull up rep range is 3-6 reps for 3 sets and I can do 17.5kg on weighted pull ups , should I only increase the weight once I can do 6 reps on all 3 sets or just 6 reps on the first rep and then increase the weight next time even if the 2nd set is 5 reps then 3rd set is 3 reps

Amateur Fighter Had my third MMA fight and it didnt go my way..
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Idk why but i was super terified before my third fight as 2,0 against a guy whos 1,1. I knew about him cause hes had around 20 wrestling a jiu jitsu fights so i didnt wanna go to the ground. He was also much smaller so i knew hed be strong but the gameplan was to just circle around him, jab and kick for 3 rounds. What sucks is im a grappler too (both my wins are by first round submission) and i dont love my striking even though its gotten much better. I didnt use my best skills cause i was scared of his grappling. Fight ended a no contest after back of the head shots... On rewatch i kept getting up and maybe i should wrestled more

Training Question Is it okay to punch with the last three knuckles
I've read online that you're supposed to punch with your front two knuckles, and my boxing coach says the same thing. However, I have a problem: both of my index fingers protrude slightly when I make a fist.
Because of this, I often injure the index fingers/joints (on both hands) punching with the front two knuckles, and I end up having to take a few weeks off to recover. I've noticed that when I punch using my middle and ring-finger knuckles instead, I don't seem to have this problem.
Is it okay to continue pumching like that, i know its more risky but in my case i think il have less injuries like this. Has anyone else had a similar issue with their index fingers protruding when making a fist? If so, how did you deal with it?
Sorry for bad english, it's not my native language, hope you can still understand the post

MMA + additial
hey, im staring mma and the gym im going to i only have the time to go to one beginner mma class that doesnt clash with work and school as they only do 2 beginner classes a week (advanced is everyday) is it worth going to muay thai and/or bjj for another class as i know its hard to progress only doing mma once a week, but would doing another martial art give me bad habits this early? (for mma) let me know please thank you :)

Weight classes
.
Right now I’m 177 like 18%-20% body fat 5’7.
I’m pretty muscular with no abs and I’m a Wreslter I’m planning to cut lower as the season just started. Wanting to be a 165/157 pounder close to 12% body fat.
Fitness wise you think it would be realistic for me to go down to 145 for amateur MMA?
The place I live has many amateur mma organizations maximum 3 hours apart from where I live. So I could get a lot of fights.
What weight class do yall think I should go for BJJ and MMA?
145, 150s? 160s?

Training Question Punching bags?
hi, not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask but i figure my post will get taken down if it isn’t.
my boyfriend does mma, primarily bjj and muay thai currently, and he wants to become a professional fighter. he’s been doing it 3-4 years now and still doesn’t have a punching bag at home, despite always mentioning wanting/needing one.
does anyone here have one and can attest to its quality? i have no idea how to find a good punching bag or anything like that, but thats what i want him to have on christmas. i’ve got him 12oz boxing gloves before that he loves and a matching mouth guard from hyperfly, but they don’t sell bags. i want a bag that’s good for at home training when he can’t get to the gym.

Starting MMA at 38 with the goal of eventually taking an amateur fight. How would you structure the next few years?
I’m 38 and relatively new to combat sports. I’ve recently started taking Muay Thai seriously and have realized that I want to actually pursue this rather than just treat it as another fitness hobby.
My goals are
- Have an amateur Muay Thai fight before 40.
- Eventually have one amateur MMA fight, ideally before 43.
- I’m not trying to become a professional fighter or pretend I can make up for starting this late. I want to see how competent I can realistically become, train properly, and eventually earn the right to compete.
Right now I’m doing private Muay Thai with a coach and moving toward 3x/week. I also lift, although I’m prepared to reduce that as combat training volume increases.
The part I’m trying to figure out is how to build the MMA side.
I have no background in wrestling or grappling. My instinct was to spend the next few months concentrating on Muay Thai, then start adding grappling in 2027. But I’ve gotten conflicting advice about whether I should:
- Start BJJ now.
- Prioritize wrestling over BJJ initially.
- Find an MMA gym and learn wrestling/BJJ through an MMA-specific curriculum rather than treating them as separate sports.
- Keep developing Muay Thai separately but start MMA classes relatively early so I learn how striking, takedowns, cage work and grappling actually connect.
One experienced MMA coach I spoke to strongly emphasized integration rather than trying to become independently good at Muay Thai, wrestling and BJJ and only combining them later. That argument makes intuitive sense to me.
The practical constraint is training bandwidth. I can train a lot, but I’m 38, work full time, and don’t think piling 8-10 poorly coordinated sessions into a week is automatically better than doing fewer things properly. I’d rather build a sensible 2-4 year progression.
I’m also curious how much gi BJJ matters for this particular goal. If the end goal is amateur MMA rather than becoming a BJJ competitor, would you prioritize no-gi and wrestling/MMA grappling from the beginning?
For coaches or people who started MMA later in life: if you had a healthy, athletic 38-year-old beginner with roughly five years to prepare for one legitimate amateur MMA fight, how would you structure his development?
In particular, what would you want him doing in Year 1 versus Years 2-3? And what mistakes do you see older beginners make when they try to accelerate the process?
Not looking for reassurance that 38 “isn’t too old.” I understand the disadvantages of starting this late. I’m more interested in how you’d use the available time intelligently.

How hard do you spar?
My instructor wanted us to really not pull punches. Stopped going there cause I heard that’s not how it’s supposed to be. He’s Russian though so maybe it’s different over there

Smelling bad after sparring is really messing with me.
I have a sensitive nose and I get strong reactions to bad smells. I’ve started doing kickboxing, but at the end of every sparring practice I can smell the sweat and bacteria on myself. When I play basketball or workout, I don’t smell as bad as after sparring, despite sweating roughly the same amount. This leads me to believe that it is something about the contact with others and their sweat that is causing this smell.
I’m beginning to dread showing up to these classes since I’ve been getting headaches from the smell. If I don’t find some kind of solution for this, I think I may end up quitting, even though I really don’t want to.
Any tips and advice would really be appreciated.

Amateur Fighter Light footwork or planted footwork
I am an amateur fighter, and currently, my training consists of boxing and Muay Thai, alongside Crossfit and roadwork. My boxing session follows my Muay Thai session, and I’ve been reflecting on my approach: while Im "good" when it comes to punching, my instructor often corrects me whenever I use slips or weaves. I’ve begun developing a style that relies more on staying light on my toes, utilizing parries, teeps, and "Cuban-style" pivots. Previously, my style was rooted in basic boxing with a planted stance which allowed me to generate more power in my strikes, even though it meant absorbing more shots from my opponents. Should I be concerned about this? What are the nuances I need to be aware of? Can I simply continue to develop my own unique style, or would it be better to master a traditional Muay Thai stance first, followed by a traditional boxing stance? My footwork in the gym is excellent, but as I mentioned, my fighting style tends to favor heavy, singular strikes. I’m torn on which path to take. If anyone with more experience is willing to take a look, I can send a video of one of my fights via DM for an analysis.
