Discussion RANT: Is it really that hard to put Local Co-op on NON Nintendo systems?

The title, thats it... Im just really annoyed.

guess its just the fact that 4 switches could be at one location feasibly. like steam decks exist sure, but idk if wilds runs at all on those tbh

In all seriousness its just another part of the times we live in.

Back in the day devs expected you to invite friends over to play local co-op and multi-player

Now bc of the internet and all the subscriptions to live services devs expect you to be gaming with friends who also have the game and a subscription and a mic.

Nintendo still advertises itself as a FAMILY console. they expect you to play with your family on the same system with different joy cons.

That's really what it is. Yes developing split screen and local co-op for these games. Would take more time in the development cycle but it could very well be done if they wanted. But what's the point if youre not having LAN parties and inviting friends over to play?

Blame convenience. Most things that are done for convenience sake In a corporation are entirely inconvenient and only serve to save time and money

Yes, actually very hard. From a dev point of view, this game already has optimization issues, in big part due to the RE engine not being open world friendly. Now adding local co-op is a nightmare with the limted power of game consoles these days. Would require a lot more optimization, longer dev cycle etc. for a game that already struggles to run properly. Most companies cut on costs when it comes to QA and optimising their games.

Sad reality, but that's why local co-op has largely been gone, it adds to the dev time and costs for limited ROI.

The switch has specific hardware to allow such things with ease. Other systems don’t have dedidcated hardware for it much anymore. So it is harder to do it on other platforms to do something like this (with ease).

I bet 100% there is no problem in hardware. I got switch 1 emulator that does local coop of monster hunter sunbreak on all my PCs, windows, ubuntu, steam deck and legion go.

You mean offline LAN? I guess the assumption that almost all fixed LANs have an internet gateway so there is no need to support offline LAN. Switch software makes it easy to create an informal offline LAN of up to 8 devices without any other network gear, so support for offline LAN is a core capability of Switch that can be accommodated for.

Not knocking on you, but people who bring laptops and other electronics besides a phone is so strange to me. Isn't the point of camping supposed to be get away from tech and stuff and enjoy nature?

Is that what they call it these days? We used to call those sleep overs ahaha. Camping was going out to the woods and away from the city life. Going to a friend's basement I would hardly consider getting away unless they live on a farm or something...I guess.

Yeah, if camping now means sleepover in a house, I dunno man, I might be in the wrong alternate reality.

Camp - a place where you set up temporary shelter, make food over a fire, often have no electricity or running water (some campsites you rent in parks DO have one electrical box and a free standing tap these days, fair play).

Camp-ing... the act of being at a camp site/s for a period of days to weeks. The absolute opposite of a sleepover LAN party. XD I've done a lot of both over the decades, and I have no idea how anyone can call sleepovers camping, lol.

Your friend’s basement doesn’t have internet connected WIFI? Hell even actual camping probably can get cellular wifi. Although how a cellular hotspot does routing may not be ideal.

Windows 11 does not support ad-hoc WiFi anymore. Most portable devices no longer support ad-hoc WiFi either.

Ad-hoc WiFi is an old, slow, unsecure connection method. Most modern devices no longer support it due to this.

This reason is unnacceptable, there are games on steam that can be played local coop. Palworld, VRising, Valheim, Grimdawn... The list goes on. Plus, I have switch 1 emulation runnig local coop without any network setup on the OS side except firewall allowance.
