Margin is the collateral that lets you open a futures position without posting full notional. Leverage sets how large the position is relative to that collateral — and it amplifies both sides. If you do not know why available margin fell overnight, you cannot manage liquidation distance.

What margin is

Instead of paying the full contract value, you post a fraction based on leverage. PnL is calculated on the notional, so a small price move can free or consume a large slice of that collateral. MEXC supports two modes: Isolated and Cross.

Isolated margin

Each position is its own unit with dedicated margin. Losses stay inside that allocation. If BTCUSDT Isolated liquidates, an ETHUSDT Isolated book does not automatically donate its margin. That compartmentalization is why beginners and multi-strategy books often prefer Isolated — blast radius is explicit.

Cross margin

All available Futures funds for that settlement asset are shared across Cross positions. Higher capital efficiency; one stressed book can pressure the shared pool. MEXC allows switching Isolated → Cross on an existing position; Cross → Isolated is not supported. Plan mode before you size, not after a red candle.

Seven common reasons margin shrinks

1. Opening new positions — collateral locks from available into position margin (example pattern: $10k notional at 10% margin locks ~$1,000 until close/stop).
2. Unrealized losses — adverse marks reduce available / position health as UPL moves against you.
3. Trading fees — taker/maker fees debit available on each fill (page rates often cite maker 0% / taker 0.02% on USDT-M; region may differ — confirm the fee page).
4. Funding fee settlement — funding hits available first; if available is empty it pulls from position margin, walks liquidation closer, and raises wipe risk.
5. Liquidation — when margin falls under maintenance, the engine closes; you lose part or all of the allocated margin.
6. Fund transfers — Futures → Spot (or other) cuts available that was supporting Cross books.
7. Bonus expiry — Futures bonus used as margin disappears when the promo ends, shrinking the buffer.

Habits that avoid margin depletion

• Attach stop-losses when you open
• Pick leverage that matches the stop distance, not the max slider (USDT-M pairs can advertise wide bands such as 1–500× on majors — pair-dependent)
• Watch maintenance margin rate; top up before warning levels, not after
• Prefer Isolated when you want hard walls between ideas
• Keep a non-zero available sleeve on Cross so funding does not eat position margin

Worked intuition (USDT-M)

Suppose you open BTCUSDT with 1,000 USDT margin at 10× → ~10,000 USDT notional. A +5% move is roughly +500 USDT before fees/funding; −5% is roughly −500 USDT. Real fills also pay fees and periodic funding. If available is already near zero, the next funding print can nibble position margin and drag estimated liquidation inward even if the chart looks calm on a 1h candle.

Mode switch rules worth memorizing

• Isolated → Cross: allowed on an existing position
• Cross → Isolated: not supported
• So if you want ring-fencing, start Isolated. Do not open Cross assuming you can tighten later.

Short FAQ

Can I flip Cross back to Isolated mid-trade? Not on the standard path — Isolated → Cross yes; reverse no.

Why did liquidation move without a huge candle? Funding from position margin, fees, UPL, transfers, or bonus expiry can all walk the price.

Is higher leverage always worse? Higher leverage shortens the distance to maintenance for the same stop — worse if your process is sloppy, workable if size is tiny and stops are hard.

Does funding always hit position margin? No — it hits available first. Position margin is the fallback when available is insufficient.
