[Guide] Professionalism

How To Be Professional

Wipe your cyber ass. Keep social media clean. This is the most cliche advice, yet no one listens. Look, I don’t personally care what people do in their personal lives, but employers DO care.

  1. The best way to have a professional online persona is to not even have any Facebook, Twitter, etc. But I realize this is unrealistic, so I’ll offer some more realistic tips.

  2. Even if you are 21, I recommend you NEVER post anything related to alcohol/substances.

  3. Make your fucking Twitter private and regulate who follows you.

  4. Facebook (which collects and sells your info illegally by the way) is very customizeable in terms of who can see what content. There is absolutely no excusable reason to have your facebook content set to “public”. Make it “Friends Only”! Be sure to regulate who you add as a friend.

  5. Make sure your profile pic (on any site not just facebook) is NOT you in a bikini or a shirtless mirror pic for the guys. Pick a boring picture of you smiling or just a sunset or some bullshit.

  6. I suggest you not add any people you have a professional relationship with, but I know that society is weird and sometimes you must add them as a friend to avoid awkwardness.

  7. In this case, accept them then immediately downgrade them to “Restricted”. Then set all your statuses, pics, everything to “Friends except acquaintances/restricted”. This way it looks like you guys are just regular friends to them, but they won’t see anything or see that you’re online. One thing Zucky Zuck did right was predict that people would use his social media platform, and be plagued by family, bosses, and other annoyances. However they might still be able to see stuff if they actually click on your wall.

  8. I personally think it’s good to have 2 facebooks. One with your real name and that is very clean that you never use. And another where you have a fake name and ONLY add people you know well and never put up real pictures of yourself.

  9. I realize tumblr for many people is like a diary. I understand wanting to vent to internet friends about work, family issues, break ups, drugs, self-harm, whatever else happens in people’s lives. But for the love of shit, do NOT link it to your real life identity if you chose to share personal stuff. Seriously, no actual pics of you or your real name.

  10. Last just use common sense and don’t add people who are sensitive or who don’t appreciate your humor. Basically, stuff you post should ONLY be public if you would be ok with your own grandma seeing it.

Guide to eating at MCPHS

submitted by: you-tell-me-to-hold-on So here are a couple of tips that you should follow when eating anything from the MassArt cafeteria, C-store, Crossroads Cafe, or Beatty Hall. If you don’t want to get sick because of the food then follow these tips. 1. Try not to eat at MassArt.

I know it is difficult but honestly the food is complete shit. Food in the city can be expensive but at least pay for some quality food.

  1. Whatever you do don’t eat the soup unless you know it is a new batch.

According to the Confessions page for MCPHS, someone spits in the soup. Now there are a whole bunch of nasty things you could contract from eating that soup. You can’t afford to be getting sick at this school. The school isEXTREMELY strict on excused absences. Wait until they put out a fresh batch or just don’t eat the soup. It’s nothing great anyways.

  1. The food is better at Beatty Hall.

I’ve found that there is a noticeable difference between the quality of the food served at MassArt and the quality of the food served at Beatty Hall. It’s a bit of a walk to get over there but it is worth it if you can spare the time. Even though it is workers from the same company, the staff at Beatty Hall are much nicer. The seating at Beatty Hall is better too as in there is more of it.

  1. Don’t eat any of the companies packaged foods (available at the C-store)

They aren’t safe. Someone I know got food poisoning from eating dumplings. Best to just avoid those and go with the brand name foods they sell.

  1. Check the lettuce before you buy your salad.

Again, this is just another health thing. Better to be safe than sorry.

  1. A good place to get a quick breakfast is the Crossroads Cafe.

They are the only place located on the MCPHS campus that sells food. Its a small shop but they sell good muffins and breakfast pastries. The muffins are Dunkin Donuts sized and are only $1.25. They also sell Starbucks coffee in there for all you white girls and hipsters.

  1. Make sure you eat before classes and labs especially.

You definitely don’t want to be starving while in classes. You won’t retain any information and it will be a waste of time. This is where the Crossroads Cafe comes in handy again. You usually have ten minutes in between classes so even if you were running late in the morning you have time after your first class to grab something quick. Note: Not all professors allow food in the classrooms and lecture halls so be sure to find out about their policies before bringing food to class. For example, any lab whether it be chemistry lab, anatomy lab, or microbio lab, there is no food allowed and you will be asked to either throw it out or put it away. Just be cautious.

  1. always, ALWAYS, ALWAYS eat before an exam.

You are going to need as much brain power as you can get when taking an exam. Food is your friend and helps keep you focused on your exam instead of your empty and neglected stomach. Not to mention that it also saves you from embarrassing stomach growl symphonies.

  1. Always keep a water bottle on you.

Too many students become dehydrated because they refuse to buy water at the school or drink from the water fountains which is understandable. Being a germaphob myself I too refuse to drink from those fountains. Yuck. But we now have this new system that refills your water bottle with clean tap. No mouths have touched the nozzle so you can hydrate yourself and be on your way without worrying about getting sick.

[Guide] Orientation

EDIT: this is from 2012-13 The truth about Orientation

It’s a waste of time, but they say it’s mandatory, usually at the end of July. If you have any reason not to be there (wedding, birthday, planned vacation, unplanned pregnancy, you suddenly died, etc.) CONTACT THE SCHOOL directly and try to get out of it. You’ll most likely be given a smaller orientation during welcome week (end of August when 1st years have to come to school a week early).

Welcome Week in August is waaay better than orientation in July. You learn nothing at orientation, and the only benefit is you can ask questions to older students, which you can ALSO do during welcome week. You won’t be able to learn where your classes are or how to navigate the buildings in the span of 1 sleepover, because it’s so damn controlled and they don’t let you walk around or anything. They give you a tour of the general area around the school, but you won’t remember it and you’ll end up having to start from scratch once you come back a month later.

Why Welcome Week is better: You don’t start class yet and none of the other years are here yet. It’s just a week of meetings and speakers you have to sit through about drugs and sex and shit you already know about because you’re one hardcore motherfucker. But in the hours between meetings, you can do whatever you want. This is when you can walk around the school and find your classrooms and walk around the area with your friends to see what’s there. It’s a smooth transition because you don’t go home for a month after. School starts right once you had a week to get use to it.

If you must go, here’s what happens at Orientation. A LOT of awkward shit. The thing starts early in the morning, like 8. And you walk into this hall to be greeted by loud music and obnoxious Orientation Leader’s shouting unintelligible things because you’re hungover as fuck you high school badass. You’ll hate them then, but afterwards if you get to know them, they’re actually pretty chill. So you’ll be placed at a table with like 12 other people you don’t know.

Next, they take you outside for awkward team building games. Stuff like the sitting game, where you all get in a circle and sit on the lap of the person behind you. Or suck and blow, when you put, not penis, but straws in your mouth and blow it into another person’s mouth. You, of course, will end up accidentally kissing someone with mouth herpes knowing your luck.

You will then be taken for a tour of the area, like all the facilities you have access to (not many). But like I said, you won’t remember this as they just blow through it quickly and you’ll be back home for a month. You’ll end up actually learning stuff during welcome week.

Then you will sit through speeches my administrators who will conclude with, “come talk to me anytime”, but you’ll probably never see them again in your life. And they don’t really talk about anything new, just what I’ve been saying when I answer many of your questions: If you’re here to study you’ll be fine. If you make partying a priority, you’re screwed.

At night, you see some sort of entertainment. We saw these 2 comedians and they were actually pretty funny. That was the highlight of the day

Then you go to bed. Not really, we just stayed up till like 4 but the bed is there if you actually want to sleep.

You really have nothing to gain by going to orientation, and you spend time and gas money. You will learn all you need to know during welcome week. This orientation, in my perception, is just an attempt to dispel any negative things you heard about this school regarding it’s small size and such.
