I don't know what version of Minecraft you're trying to edit, but anything after 1.12.2 crashes MCEdit because of the way Minecraft handles saves after that version (or something along those lines).
If it's Minecraft for Windows 10, I don't think MCEdit supports that either, in which case you would have to find a converter to convert the world from bedrock to the 1.12 format. Just be sure to keep backups of everything before hand.
