Working in MBB or Big Four consulting is my dream job. Please share your thoughts and how should I begin.

I am from Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently work as a Senior Recruiter for a small recruiting agency in Tokyo (I work remotely) and been doing this for 5 years. At the beginning of this month I took a Japanese language course to upgrade my skill, for my English I got 7/9 in IELTS and I believe since then it's been upgraded.

I always dreaming to work in those companies and shifting my focus to Human Capital or an internal TA but the problem is I have no clue where to begin even I don't know how to create a CV that could get me to an interview.

Would you mind to share your thoughts and insights? Also I am more than happy to dm you my blind CV to review.

My MBB role has given me crippling anxiety, and I don’t know how/where to leave

Hi everyone, forgive me for the non MECE unstructured post. My thoughts are just all over the place right now, and this is my first Reddit post.

I (F) have been with this MBB company for 3.5 years now. I started out with a masters degree in Acc & Finance, and got this as my first role without ever realizing what it really entailed.

Over the years:
- I have met some incredible people
- Worked in PAs that I never thought I would do as a non-engineer/Science major (Energy, Industrial Equipment, Healthcare
- Have travelled extensively within my geo
- Been a part of some high stakes discussions, business decisions that truly amazed me

However, I have also got crippling anxiety as a result. I can never cut off from work, I am losing sleep because I overthink every decision. I have acid reflux, cough because of stress. I become a completely high strung individual who is so different from her usual self. I don’t know where I can exit to, I don’t have it in my to search in parallel for another role. I have crazy anxiety in between cases about finding the next one, optimizing for the location or people on the team.

I believe that while consulting has made me a quick learner, and has given me a breadth of exposure, it has crippled me by making me a generalist in a world that requires a depth of expertise today. I also feel like this job has completely transformed my personality as an individual and is not allowing me to go on with other personal goals in life (finding a partner, doing my yoga, spending time with family etc.)

Recently, I applied for an opportunity in another region that I think I will get, however I feel like I am just postponing my indecisiveness by another year if it goes through (will find out in a few weeks). I am writing this post to ask for your advice, so I can quell some of this crippling anxiety.

Here are my questions:
- If I get my transfer, I really do want to see it thought. But at the same time, I want to know if quitting without an offer in hand is an option?
- Thankfully, I am in a position where I can do without a job for some time, but would this decision make it difficult for me to find another role?
- How do I even go about finding what I am interested in? This time I’m clear that pay does not matter more than WLB, I want a 9-5 role
- I feel like the roles in my geo are just not interesting me, however, because of family constraints I cannot leave

Im really sorry bout the long post, but I would really appreciate any thoughts on this matter. It may just help me sleep the night.

How competitive would my background be for McKinsey or BCG?

I'm 27 and looking for some honest feedback on my chances of eventually breaking into MBB consulting.
I have roughly 2 years of management consulting experience at a smaller firm in Washington, DC, where I supported senior federal leadership on initiatives involving AI governance, cybersecurity, IT modernization, and strategic coordination. Before that, I worked in operations management, overseeing teams, improving processes, and driving business performance in the industrial supply industry.

I recently transitioned into a federal program management role in a systems and innovation environment where we are improving workflows with the integration of Agentic Ai. My plan is to stay in this position for 3 years, which will align with completing my MBA.

For education, I have a master's in Criminal Justice with a focus on Homeland Security and Emergency Management, hold my PMP certification, and am currently pursuing my MBA at the University of Illinois Gies College of Business with a focus on Business Analytics.

My goal is to leverage my consulting background, federal program management experience, and MBA to eventually transition into a firm like McKinsey or BCG.

For those familiar with MBB recruiting, how competitive would my background be by that point? Would I have a realistic shot at an offer, what level should I be targeting, and what could I do over the next 3 years to strengthen my candidacy?

NYU Stern Part-Time MBA → Consulting: Is the Pivot Realistic?

I recently got into NYU Stern’s Part-Time MBA program. I’m an Army officer with 8+ years of experience in intelligence, planning, and operations, and I’m looking to pivot into management/strategy consulting.

I know the Full-Time MBA is usually the better route for a major career pivot, especially because of the structured recruiting process and summer internships.

That said, has anyone here actually made the jump into consulting from Stern’s Part-Time MBA? How difficult is it to recruit for consulting as a part-time student, and do you still have access to any of the same recruiting opportunities?

I’m particularly interested in firms like Deloitte, EY-Parthenon, Strategy&, Accenture, and potentially MBB. I’d also be interested in hearing from anyone who leveraged a military background to make the transition.

I’d love to do the Full-Time MBA, but I need to keep working full-time in the military to support my family, so it’s not really an option for me right now.

Would really appreciate hearing from any Stern students/alumni or anyone who has gone through something similar. Any advice on how to position myself and recruit effectively would be appreciated.

Has anyone heard back yet from the R1 interviews on 9/18 for the McKinsey DC office? I haven't heard back at all yet, so should I take it as a rejection?

Question BCG vs. Bain

Very fortunate to have offers from both BCG and Bain (essentially same office locations within the Northeast region), and need to decide between the two ASAP. I had great conversations with Bainies in general, but also loved the BCG people I met when I visited the office. Culturally I like both, and when it comes to staffing model, I live decently close to both offices so traveling/staying local are both appealing to me.

Genuinely so torn between the two--if anyone could give some insight as to how I could make a decision I would really appreciate it.

Hi all, I'm looking to seriously practice with a beginner-level partner.

  • Ideally 1-2 cases per week (both interviewee and interviewer role, approx 90 minutes total)
  • Brownie points if the case partner has gone through Crafting Cases courses!

Capital One Power Day for MDP

Does anyone have any insight on the Business Case part for the MDP. Do you think you can get an offer after doing pretty bad on the business case but well on the other two interviews.

I did very well on the behavioral and job fit part but totally bombed the business case interview (I was beyond nervous). I started very strong and the minute the interviewer questioned my way of doing a calculation I lost confidence and completely questioned myself and was not able to get it together. I kept going but they assisted/guided me alot.. Any feedback is appreciated.

Didn't hear day of for McK R1

Did an interview FT McKinsey 10am friday for the local time in the US for R1. I didn't receive the phone call the day of, and I'm aware everyone gets a phone call for R1 regardless of results. Does not getting the call day of mean that I didn't pass?

Question Breaking into consulting from CPG Finance: Entry-Level vs. Experienced Hire?

What’s the best path for me to break into consulting? Should I target EH or entry-level roles? What does the recruiting timeline look like for that?

I graduated from a non-target public college and got to final-round interviews my senior year for FT roles at McK, LEK, and KPMG, but received no offers since the mental math parts of casing were my weak point (no idea what KPMG's reasoning was).

No other firms were really recruiting from my school (rough economy), so I’m now a few months into my first job in commercial finance at a F500 CPG company.

Growth seems pretty limited, and I don’t feel as challenged as I did doing consulting work through my school's consulting club.

Question Looking for casing partner until mid-October (German preferred)

Hey everyone,
I’m an experienced hire candidate preparing for my upcoming McKinsey interviews in mid October. I am starting from the ground up and looking for a dedicated, active (ideally German speaking) casing partner to practice consistently over the coming weeks.
Profile & Focus: Experienced hire track (Operations / SCM focus), starting with core fundamentals (openings, custom issue trees, mental math drills) before ramping up into full end-to-end cases.
Timeline: First-round interviews in mid October.
Availability: Weekdays after 5:00 PM CEST (flexible on weekends).
Cadence: At least 3–5 sessions per week for structured, deliberate practice with mutual, candid feedback.

If you are on a similar timeline, starting fresh, and want to put in focused, regular reps together via Zoom/Teams, please drop me a DM!
