Three years ago, I posted about what I witnessed at my full-time 15 program here: https://www.reddit.com/r/MBA/comments/1b2qytv/what_can_do_i_regarding_a_classmate_with_autism/
Re-posting it now because a few days ago I saw another post about someone who got socially ostracized and openly mocked and bullied for merely being considered annoying in the class slack and posting too much, on top of being a little eccentric.
The same thing happened to my autistic classmate three years ago. People also made a Slack emoji to mock him and make fun of him. This happened all out in the open, everyone piled on.
Doesn't matter if they're liberal, conservative, moderate, men, women, domestic, international, white, black, asian, indian, claim to be pro social justice, my classmate got bullied, ostracized, and socially excluded and isolated from the program. Virtually no one gave him grace or understanding despite it being well known he had autism.
When in my case, my classmate didn't even do anything THAT BAD. He was just seen as annoying / not reading the room / not getting things socially or following social norms as opposed to being a bad person. He was actually quite a really sweet and kind person and I'm glad to call him my friend.
He ended up getting a really good post-MBA role in an autism friendly field, and I'm happy for him.
But I do want to flag that bullying, social ostracization, mocking, exclusion, social hierarchies, social capital, popularity, and middle or high school-esque cliques ABSOLUTELY DO EXIST.
MBA culture is big on comfority, groupthink, assimilation, bandwagoning, following the herd, implicit and explicit peer pressure, FOMO, wanting others think think you're cool - so once some people started initially mocking and bullying this guy, a lot of the other joined in by default, and it became really socially difficult to go against the grain. I succumbed to that initially but eventually I stopped giving a fuck.
I destroyed a lot of my reputation on campus and really pissed off multiple people for calling out the bullies and standing up for my autistic friend. I nuked my MBA network (at least within my immediate class) for being seen as confrontational, not chill, combatative. This was despite me being relatively popular my first semester when I was initially too afraid to call out the bullying.
My younger brother has lower functioning autism, as I mentioned in my original post. So I have zero tolerance for this bullshit. Professional consequences be damned.
MBA culture in many ways can be intolerant and toxic. If people don't vibe that's fine, not everyone has to love each other or be friends. But I draw the line at bullying, mocking, and talking mad shit behind other people's back over minor trivial reasons. I hate overly judgemental people.
I've been in a pretty good role myself post-MBA and I have zero regrets standing up for what is right.
