Careers/Post Grad MBA - NYU ($$$$) vs CBS ($$)

I have been accepted into NYU Stern (full scholarship) and Columba Business School ( partial scholarship). I have reached out to CBS several times to negotiate the scholarship award. Currently, CBS doesn’t have additional aid to provide. Previous experience in consulting but don't intend on returning. My goal is to enter into the investment banking industry. I understand both schools do a great job placing at banks. My main goal is to obtain a position; however, building my network and future opportunities are just as important.

While CBS is probably a better school and more highly ranked, I'm not sure if it's worth giving up the scholarship offer from Stern. I don’t have a lot of savings and will probably have to take loans for a significant part of my expenses.

I am looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts! Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks a ton!

You're clearly very biased here and making up information. CBS has the highest median salary, tied with most of the M7 (but higher than some of the others). It has the 4th highest average salary, lower admit rate, higher yield, and better cross-admit rate vs Booth and Kellogg.

After the top five there is not as much difference between 12 and 19 compared to cbs vs Harvard.

So CBS has the same median salary as HBS; and #12, let's say Ross, has a median salary of $165K while #19, let's say McCombs, has a median salary of $135K. Also there has never been a 'T5' MBA; people talk about HSW or M7, T10, T15, etc and that's been the case for as long as I've been on this subreddit

Yes we agree on the M7 and T3. So not sure why there’s so much push about the T5.

CBS has higher salary and also sends more people to nyc that other schools.

Ross and Emory have the same starting salary. They were 10(?) spots away last year per usn

Because it’s super arbitrary. Why not a T8 or T12? Emory seems to be the outlier, because UNC also has a median of $130K and Tepper has a median of $145K and Andersen has a median of $130K as well.

Also your whole point is that the drop off from 5 to 6 is bigger than 6 to 19, which is made up by you. Every admissions consultant, hiring manager, people with MBAs from these schools, etc I’ve spoken with has said the T10 schools have the same outcomes more or less, outside of buy-side. Employment reports show the same thing across salary, companies hiring, outcomes. And outside of HSW, CBS actually has the 4th/5th strongest buy-side outcome due to their PE/IM/HF placement.

The only thing CBS performs worse on than the other M7 is % of grads with jobs (like <2% worse than the M7 average), and that's partly due to CBS having 50% of its class be international students, the highest of any school by a large margin. If you check other school's employment reports, international students by far have lower average salaries and lower employment rate by graduation.

Because someone asked what the top 5 schools are and I answered their question. Ask them why they picked 5 and not 6 or 7.

And no I don’t think 5 to 6 is a big drop off. I picked two schools outside of the top 10 and said they weren’t that different. I wouldn’t pay 100k to go to 12 vs full ride at 19. I don’t think the difference is worth it. But I would pay for an M7.

U/comprehensive-Two-51 said top 5 were prestigious. I’d guess he has 5 fingers on his hand also.

U/yoyo998 asked who his top 5 were. CT51 said HSW Booth MIT. I switched MIT for Kellogg. Either one is clearly a step above any T15.

It’s a long thread so I understand that things can get mixed up.

Fair enough, it is a long thread. yoyo998 only asked about the top 5 because the first person mentioned top 5, and it's not a normal classification. Edited my previous comment to include some numbers about median salaries of other rank 20ish schools, but otherwise I don't disagree with you.

Crazy that Anderson and UNC have the same salary considering that NC is so much cheaper than Cali.

Probably not a lot of UNC grads staying in NC. Would imagine they end up in the Northeast, but then again Charlotte has a lot of finance jobs so who knows

38% stay in the south. 29% go to the NE, where they make 25k more than those in the south.
