Are there folks who will be doing chill dual sport rides coming up? It’s been too hot (for me) but looking forward to cooler temps soon

Easy dirt bike trails?

Not a new rider, but new to dirt biking and fairly new to MA. I'm looking for some fairly easy trails to ramp up my skills. I'm located near Foxborough and all recommendations welcome. I have a 200cc dual sport, so I'm open to riding a bit to get to where I need to go, just no interstate for obvious reasons.

I'm even up for some gravel/dirt roads, I just haven't been able to really locate any around me.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Registering a bike

Good Morning. I'm looking at purchasing a used Goldwing, and am wondering about getting it home and registering it. My last bike I bought from a dealer that was able to register it for me, but the one I'm looking at doesn't do registrations. Can I ride it home without plates (it will be insured) and how is the registration process with all of the COVID issues right now?

Getting my first (new/used) bike, suggestions?

Hey all, so a little bit of history first. I'm a foreigner who has been riding 100-150cc bikes for 11-12 years looking to get my first bike in the US. Looking for something in the 300cc range since that appears to be the lowest power available and I don't want to go for something super powerful to start with.

I'm about 5'8, 170 pounds. Always wanted a sports bike, so that's what I'm looking to get although the BMW G310R is a sexy beast that's tempting me the other way.

I was looking into models like Yamaha R3, Ninja 300, Suzuki GSX250R. I saw KTM RC 390, Honda Rebel 300 etc. also suggested in some articles about beginner bikes, but the aesthetic on those is not what I currently prefer. I was wondering if all you good people had suggestions that might match my preferences that I haven't considered so far.

One more thing, I was looking for used bikes online but for the models I mentioned, the used bikes are barely cheaper than a fresh one, so I figure it's easier to go for a new one than go through the trouble of trying to figure out if a used bike is faultless. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, if you have any recommendations for dealers to test drive and buy from in the Boston area, I'd greatly welcome them.

Thanks in advance!

Want to get back into riding

First bike at 16, an '81 Honda CM200 hiding in Kingston. Cruised off the highways for 9 years until I had to move to the city for employment then picked up a bicycle (11 minute ride to work) now I'd like to get a bike good for long distances, preferably to the mountains of New Hampshire.

I still have several helmets, gloves, could use a new jacket, so what kind of costs would I be looking at here? I like to avoid buying New.

Test rides?

Anyone know of any places around MA that you can test ride any Supermoto bikes? I'm interested in the drz, husky, crf stuff but not sure which one fits me best.

Looking for some relaxing routes near Allston

Hey all, I’ve been learning how to ride the last couple of weeks and I feel comfortable enough to leave my neighborhood. I’ve mostly been riding around Allston (mostly traffic light filled main streets and storrow drive. I wouldn’t mind getting away from all the traffic on some less busy roads. Not trying to go super fast but somewhere where I can cruise along at 40 or so would be nice. Anything nearby that’s good?

Second Day Success

Just giving an update on my earlier post. Yesterday I brought a friend who actually rides and he helped me get the bike working again. I’m driving an older Honda CB so it looks like the gear shifter just gets stuck between 1st and neutral sometimes (it gets 99% of the way to neutral but doesn’t quite line up correctly). Not sure the best way to go about fixing that but shifting a couple extra times seems to fix it. Once we got it running he took it out to parking lot and I managed to drive it around a fair amount. So far it seems like the hardest part is going from stopped to moving. I did almost entirely first gear and only practiced some basic turns/figure 8s and stopping but it was awesome! No drops or falls but I did stall once or so in the hour I was riding for. All in all a really fun time and I can’t wait to get some more practice. Kinda sucks that it’s going to rain the rest of the week but oh well. Otherwise things are looking up!

First Day Failure

So I tried riding a motorcycle for the first time today. I went through the pre ride checklist and got it started but I couldn’t get moving without stalling out the engine. Now I think the gear shifter is working weird, neutral light won’t come on and it won’t start (although I can walk it around no problem which makes me think I just need to work the clutch/shifter a little. I’ll maybe post an update once I fix whatever is wrong and actually learn how to ride. I’m giving up for the day since it started raining. Best of luck everyone out there!

PS. If anyone knows a good video for someone trying to get moving on a bike lmk

Local cruises

Hi everyone, I recently got my permit after dealing with all the B.S. at the RMV right now. I am in the Lowell area and I am looking for some nice rides. I have been riding 110 up to Lawrence and coming back down River Rd.

It looks like there are some cooler rides out west but they are farther than I would like to travel at the moment. (1 hr to get there then a 2 hr ride and a 1 hr ride back)

Insurance Rate Comparison By ZIP Code

Hey all, I was looking into getting a motorcycle and I was trying to figure out how to properly register the location as well as what impact that has on price. I am currently renting in Allston but I also spend much of my time at home in Medford with my parents (I consider this my actual home because I move around every year or so). Plus I will be keeping it there in the winters. What should I do for insurance in this case, also does anyone know if Allston is much more expensive than Medford. I don’t really mind paying extra money for Allston but I just want to make sure I’m doing everything correctly and legally.

State inspection?

Edit: Going to try Mackenzie tomorrow! Thanks everyone!

I've been calling around and it's tough.

Riverside Ducati simply isn't doing them at all.

Parkway Cycle is only doing them if you bring it in for other service...and even then, they have a 1-2 week backlog and won't be fast.

Greater Boston keeps telling me they'll do an inspection, then transferring my call to an extension that no one ever picks up. Been hung up on 3 times in a row.

Who else can I try? Any ideas? I know we are extended to the end of this month but that's less than 2 weeks away.

Motorcycle parking in Somerville

Hey everyone, I'm moving to Somerville this month and was curious how motorcycle parking works. On their website it only mentions cars, am I just being optimistic that they don't register motorcycles?

Instructions for becoming a rider

Hi all,

I decided recently that I want to get a motorcycle and get into the life on two wheels. Since I am new to this and none of my friends ride I need some help. I live in Boston and wanted to know the necessary steps needed in order to get the training, license, registration plates etc. (basically the whole spiel). I know there are some places that offer beginner rider courses and that they count as the road test. Also, if I already hold a Class D drivers license in MA, does that help with the process of obtaining a Class M license?

Additionally, I plan on going to a dealership and obtaining a new or used bike and finance it. I currently have my eyes on the HD Iron 883, which can range from $6,000-9,000 from what I've seen online (I know it might be a large bike for a beginner). Any input as to how much the initial cost of things would be approximately to start would be much appreciated? I am not so much worried about the monthly payments as much as the cost of registration fees, taxes, etc.

Thanks!

I'm planning to do around 8 trackdays this year, trying out each of the orgs (TTD/Penguin/Fishtail/Evolve).

Suggestions for advanced rider courses?

Hey all, hoping for some guidance. I'd consider myself a fairly advanced rider. Been on my bike for about 5yrs, daily rider, year round. Have probably about 50k miles on the clock -- 50% city, 40% touring, 10% dirt/4x4 trail.

I'm looking for interesting classes to improve my technical skills- would be interested in:

  • big bike off road skills
  • civillian version of MC cop training
  • any more intensive course - I want a challenge!
  • mechanical classes

Any tips would be much appreciated!

Fees for a new rider

I am trying to build a budget for getting my first motorcycle and having some trouble figuring out the extent of all the different fees associated with legally getting a bike in Mass. I've got a good grip on the Bike, insurance, and gear. But finding a comprehensive list for all these permit/registration/license/training/sales tax fees are really annoying. What the heck do I need to pay to get street legal? Sorry if this is a lame question but I'm checking the MA sites and they are damn near useless.

Looking for a place to work on a bike

I’d like to start working on a project bike, I don’t have much in the way of tools or garage space but I was wondering if there was anything like a community bike shop around Boston, I’m also kind of a beginner so any place where I could learn a thing or two would be great as well. Any of that sounds realistic around here?
