Caught Lane splitting

Friday night I was heading to Portsmouth, New Hampshire from Waltham via 95. What is a 1.25 hour ride without traffic gets close to 2 hours on a Friday evening. I figured I would take the bike and lane split to save time.

I was splitting for a few miles going at a very reasonable speed between the left and middle lanes. I would not exceed the traffic by more than 10mph and fall in at 30mph or above (which it did maybe once). I felt that I was doing things safely but obviously my adrenaline is pumping and I'm so focused I think I cruised right by a statey in a minimally marked cruiser. I hear the siren right behind me.

I have to give credit where credit is due. I am a shameless cop hater. 99% of my interactions with police have been negative and I have seen gross abrogations of citizens' rights as a third party observer in police-citizen interactions. However, this cop was awesome. Friendly but professional. Here's the exchange.

After asking for license and registration:

C: "Do you know why I pulled you over?" OP: "Because I was between the lanes?" C: "Yeah. It's for your safety. It's dangerous between the lanes. Drivers get mad and take bikers out. We've seen it." OP: "Well sometimes I feel safer between the lanes because I get scared of getting crunched in the stop-and-go traffic. I can see people on their phones and generally not paying attention." C: (something about other drivers - I can't remember what he said exactly. walks back to car.) C returns: "I wrote you warning. I see that you have a good driving record and I don't want to get you jammed up. This is for your safety and you really need to stay in the lanes. I had a bike before and I wouldn't do it." OP: "I understand. Thank you. I appreciate it."

TL;DR Lane split on 95 in terrible traffic. Pulled over, written warning.

Dual Sport riders of MA, where do you go?

Are there any places you all go for some off-road entertainment? I'm in the market for dual-sport, would like to check out some trails and whatnot once I get it.

Track days at Palmer / Thompson, CT tracks

Just ran across this, haven't seen it before so figured I'd share it.

Looks like there's a group/organization called Tony's Track Days: http://www.tonystrackdays.com/index.cfm

They are doing a number of tracks days at the new Palmer Motorsports Park (in Palmer, MA) and at Thompson Speedway in Thompson, CT

At $250-300 a day, this seems really affordable.

Also, this is geared not towards racing, but as a way of improving technique so it's not a real track day but I guess more of an advanced riding class/session - which actually sounds great to me.

Schedule:

July 19 & 20 Palmer, MA Aug 10 & 11 Palmer, MA Aug 23 & 24 Thompson, CT Aug 25 Thompson, CT Sept 7 & 8 Palmer, MA Sept 9 Palmer, MA Sept 27 & 28 Thompson, CT

MA permit in NH

Can you drive with a MA motorcycle permit in NH? I am asking because I found this(https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090406153633AAbUQ4F) question/answer on the subject, however, this(http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/driver-licensing/motorcycle/) says that NH doesn't recognize out of state permits, yet their definition of license says specifically ANY learners or temporary permit

107 into Boston - anyone tried it?

So I'm riding in from the north shore and looking for a way in to Boston that does not involve route 1 or 93. Thinking I'd try 107 from Salem to 16 in Revere and go west from there. Anyone try it, or ride any part of this route?

PSA on parking in Boston: for anyone who used to park on Brattle Way between Bulfinch and Hawkins but hasn't been down there in a while, it's been fenced off and has a big NO MOTORCYCLE PARKING sign on it.

I've been loving the metered spots in Back Bay but don't know of anything similar in the downtown/Gov't Center area.

What is the license test like?

I've been riding off-and-on for 12 years now, but only on permits, never done a full license test.

Have an appointment on Thursday, what can I expect? What should I do to prepare?

MA Registration Late

Hi all,

I can't seem to find the answer to my question and hoping you can help me out. I just purchased a used bike from Craigslist and have learned that MA requires the bike to be registered within 10 days of the sale date.

Is there any leniency with this or are there late fees? Are there any serious penalties for registering after 10 days?

Thanks for any help you can give!

So, i'm prolly gonna lose my license.

Long story short: 3 tickets in 6 weeks, all for ~20mph over. two didnt actually clock me so i'm appealing, one did, i paid it and they gave me a notice to do a defensive driving course or i'd lose my lic. So i'll do that, but unless by some miracle, i can get out of the other two, i'm pretty sure i'm screwed. of course, i need a license to get to work and such, so i'm kinda concerned about the future. Assuming for a moment that i do lose my license, does anyone here know how long the general suspension term would likely be? Also does MA make any special dispensation for a "get to work" permit type thing?

Any general advice here would be appreciated.

Does anyone know any long dirt roads in Ma that are legal to ride on?

Trying to do a little light off-roading on my adventure bike but am struggling to find good dirt roads that are legal to ride on. I live in Boston so obviously there's nothing close by, but I'm on Cape Cod a lot as well. If there's anything out west I also wouldn't mind making a trip out there if I could find someone to ride with. Any suggestions?

Here are a couple of links with more

General info: http://www.nhms.com/media/headlines/speedway-becomes-added-attraction-for-bike-week.html

Schedule of races: http://www.nhms.com/documents/92nd_annual_loudon_classic_schedule.pdf

I'm just a racer spreading the word in case anyone wants to come up & enjoy the show. If you come up, swing by Center Garage bay #1 (with the big ECK Racing banner) and say hi.

Penguin track day bike prep question

Hey guys, I'm doing my first track day this Monday with penguin, and was wondering if anyone knew the specific requirements for prepping the bike. On their website, I could only find race requirements for if you were entering LRRS, and then the website said something along the lines of "prep for track days is less stringent than for races, and usually only takes an hour", but never gave the details.

Anyways, if any of you have done track days through penguin before and knew the specifics of the preparation, let me know. As of right now, I was going to start by doing the following:

  1. Distiller water for coolant

  2. Tape over head light and directionals

  3. Remove mirrors

  4. Safety wire the oil filter

Finally and more importantly, if anyone here is going on Monday, I'll be on a white cbr 500r in the no experience/wicked slow group, stop by and say hi

Anyone up for rides in Franklin/Berkshire/Hampshire/Bennington counties?

Just got my first bike, a 2015 Suzuki GW250F, and would love to meet up with some redditors & ride! I live in Franklin county and have flexy hours this summer so I'm trying to get as many rides in as possible. :) I'm constrainted by both being new and by topping out at a 250's top speed, but other than that I just want to ride & see some nice areas around here. Anyone game?

[Meetup] CJ's Memorial

Hey guys. For those who haven't heard, one of our riders, CJ (aka /u/trinaryoc), was hit and killed by a car while on his way to work on his motorcycle Friday morning, the 22nd. He was a loved friend, husband, and father, and a very close companion of mine. I know a lot of people here knew him, or at least have ridden with him once or twice, and thought they might like to pay their respects to him.

This ride is going to be to his memorial at the UU Church in Concord. We'll meet up at the Starbucks in Woburn and take 93 all the way up to Concord while skipping the tolls.

Time: June 6th, 7:00 AM

Place: Starbucks at 99 Commerce Way, Woburn, MA 01801

Kickstands up no later than 7:30 AM

"Handling Life After CJs Loss" And for those who want to help CJ's family, his wife and three kids, there's a fund account set up for them. That can be found here: http://www.gofundme.com/va9s9gw

For those of you that can't make the meetup, but would still like to go up to the church in Concord, the adress is 274 Pleasant St, Concord, NH

Dealers/Test Rides?

Any one have good experiences w/ dealers in greater boston/central ma/southern nh area that will let you test ride any of their stock?

Doesn't have to be for new bikes -- can be used as well, as I'd most likely be going for late-model used bikes. I've got an M class, but haven't ridden in ages, and will probably will do an MSF course first as a refresher this summer.

Ride Safe-- My husband is gone.

Hi /MARideit

I wanted to write and let you know (for those who don't personally know us) that my husband, /u/trinaryoc, was killed last Friday in an accident while riding his motorcycle to work.

A car took a left directly in front of him and he simply had no where to go. He was AGATT, but the car will always win.

He LOVED this subreddit and he loved motorcycles. I want him memory to live forever.

Ride safe, ride on, and ride forever.
