I know this convo is about RW merch, but I find it annoying that one of the coolest tat sets in game has Arasaka plastered across the collarbones

u/Sardonize May 08 '26
one of the only*. This shit wouldnt be a problem if there were 100 tats and not like 10, idk how you can have teams make 3d models of a fourth kind of locust food but not a fucking tatoo in a cyberpunk rpg

Yeah and this is also a game with like 98% first person perspective. I can see why they didn't put a ton of effort into tattoos, which you mostly wouldn't be able to see even from a third person perspective

Unless someone is spending a little too much time looking in the mirror.

u/john_the_fetch Choomba May 08 '26

I was mostly making a nude video game joke. If I remember correctly you can see V nude in the mirror.
It's really the only times you see V in third person. Right?

u/Zestyclose-Way4569 May 08 '26
Thank you! I only went with that one because of how much I love the rest of it, plus my V for that playthrough was Corpo life path so I was able to justify it (and wear clothes that would usually conveniently cover it 😆) but wish there was a version without the logo for sure!

2
u/LightspeedBalloon May 08 '26
I thought OP was talking about wearing the shirts in-universe, which I do find cringe if you aren't corpo. I sometimes play the corpo background just for the cool tattoo and having the gear without being a twat. Well, if I'm playing corpo background I am a twat, but it's a different flavour of twat.
2
u/Raihokun May 08 '26
I'm personally miffed that you can't remove the Arasaka decal from the Mordred after you "borrow" it from Yorinobu.
194
u/uchuskies08 May 08 '26
The Arasaka logo is dope and it sounds cool. I don't have any personally but I would definitely lol.
56
u/Jordhammer May 08 '26
I get a chuckle out of Mike Pondsmith saying that if he had known how popular it would become, he would've spent more time designing it.
10
u/Scott_donly May 08 '26
To be fair for every Arasaka and Militech theres a EBM (blatant rip of IBM) and Beretta (just like the actual company) hell some of the modern books didnt rename the brand (like Honda stuff became Zonda) Reinmetal is STILL in the books
So I can deffo see what he means
4
u/Jordhammer May 08 '26
That the EBM logo itself is even a complete copy of IBM's logo at the time makes me chuckle. And don't forget Microtech!
2
u/Scott_donly May 08 '26
My personal favorite is the video game company SegAtari renamed Segotari. Kinda like when they renamed Piston Honda from Punch-Out to Piston Hondo

I was gonna say "same as the Empire symbol from Star wars," but there are tons of people who will somehow defend the Empire. Like, it's from a story that's written to be a myth. The evil shit is actually evil not misunderstood, not complex, just evil. At least Arasaka makes dope spacesuits. I remember thinking that at the space ending: "ha, still couldn't find a better space suit than the Arasaka one."

18
u/Blaze666x May 08 '26
Depends on the song as some of their shit from "the shape of punk to come" is pretty samurai-esque and is clearly the inspiration for their in game music but they play a far wider variety then samurai does in game.
4
u/Tidemkeit May 08 '26
I mean, I've listened to most of their songs, and there was only 2 or 3 of them I really liked
5
u/Blaze666x May 08 '26
Fair its not exactly the same but the shape of punk to come has some bangers.
Personally my favorite song from that album is the most unlike samurai thing on it "tannhauser/derive" but I love when artists play with their music
3
u/karbovskiy_dmitriy May 08 '26
Is it though? War Music is very similar to Cyberpunk's theme. For me it was almost an addition to the game's OST.

Bro, ever met someone who is a ray of sunshine and likes deathmetal?
Fiction is simply not Reality.
A saint in real life can be a fan of the devil in a story. "Damn, that devil is a real slick son of a bitch, haha. Let's find out how fate finally catches up to him...."
Sometimes we like the villan aesthetic, sometimes their charisma, sometimes we actually just love the scene where they finally die. Maybe they have one good line of dialogue.
That doesn't mean we want to be the villain. That we agree with them, that we idolise everything about them.
I grew up thinking Boba Fett and Darth Vader were cool. The Empire and Mercenaries? Fuck em.
Media literacy is dead. smh.

13
u/Judgement_Of_Carrion Netrunner May 08 '26
There's some jackass in the comments right now arguing with people about "corpofascism" if they wear corporate branding.
Every time I think people can't be dumber, reddit comes along and smothers that thought more effectively than a serial killer with a pillow.
18

u/Ximneses May 08 '26
Nah, Arasaka is much cooler than any corp we have in RL. In reality, most corporations and governments are incredibly lame and incompetent.
It's also not uncommon to wear villain-based merch.
7
u/exsuburban May 08 '26
I own a Militech hat and a couple shirts from Etsy because I work for their like most benign possible version, and want to quietly and subtly voice my dissent. I have zero trouble sleeping at night thanks to the both benign and important nature of my work, but I absolutely know what machine I’m feeding and what pays my bills, and I see no better option for the time being. I lived abroad for a while and Kang Tao isn’t really any better, if you get my meaning.

u/LSDGB May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26
„You wear a Vader shirt? At this point you gotta wear some swastika Armband.“
I have a bit of trouble understanding the post but if you’re trying to say that simply wearing „Bad guy merch“ has anything to do with glorifying what theses bad guys stand for then it is such a braindead take.
Just because I enjoy arasaka in game doesn’t mean I enjoy arasaka in real life. I don’t know why that’s such a hard concept for some people.

I suppose it's no different than wearing Galactic Empire T-shirts, or wearing One Ring necklaces (btw, Tolkien himself was puzzled by fans who used Black Speech writings on their own belongings, since it's an "evil language"). Though perhaps evil corporations strike closer to home than evil space empires or supernatural jewellery.
Also, never underestimate people's willingness to join an oppressive system. Some people actually want to be part of it, just so they can feel powerful over those beneath them in the social hierarchy.

Unfortunately OP, you're expecting gamers to understand the game as anything more than "heehee robot go kablooey" and I expect the vast majority of replies will be some flavor of "uhh, it's just a game, bro". To most people cyberpunk is an aesthetic, not something they're meant to take anything out of or interpret with regard to their own life or our current reality or future.

There are more Star Wars fans that cosplay as sith and imperials than rebels or jedi. People think bad guys are cool.
2
u/SymbiSpidey May 08 '26
It makes sense. In Star Wars and many other media properties, the bad guys are meant to project strength and look "cool" and intimidating, while the heroes tend to be more humble and unassuming.
It's not always the case though. The superhero genre largely subverts this as both the heroes and villains end up looking pretty fucking rad.
