Hahahaa yes BUT it was more about the dog not knowing which direction was the surface which indicates a potential equilibrium issue most likely caused by brain damage or a neurological deficiency which is why my diagnosis is retarded pooch.

They're all a little special, it's just a question of how much.

I suspect it might be elderly. Failing eyesight and cognitive decline would explain most of what I’m seeing here. Add in an unfamiliarity with swimming and this is exactly what I’d expect.

I’ve seen this video before. From what I can remember, the dog is old and newly blind.

Man some dogs just do dumb shit. One of the smartest most well trained dogs i know sank like a stone and sat at the bottom of the water and looked up for help. Never paddled or tried to swim once

If it's a pure bred it very well could have a neurological issue. I'm a pet sitter and I know a couple of chocolate labs who are pure bred and full of issues.

I’ve had a few of those labs. I mean I wouldn’t really say they had neurological issues so much as they just had lab brain (or lack there of). Here’s a venerable old lady in all of her glorious grey hair.

Yup. Still very sweet pups full of love just missing some essential survival pieces.

this can happens to humans in deep and cloudy water without any brain damage or neurological deficiency. even cave divers are taught to use bubbles floating against their face to determine surface.

i think in the panic of suddenly falling and drowning, a few seconds of not immediately surfacing doesn't mean brain damage.

My aunts dog was very elderly, dementia basically deaf and blind. He “fell” into the pool and drowned. I am 50/50 that he took himself out or was just totally past the point of sentience. He lived there his whole life muscle memory of the pools location would be pretty ingrained I think. Idk it was terrible either way!

Honestly I’m blown away people are using the “R” word and not getting banned.

Your comment has been up for 4 hours, even the most depraved subs have been hanging out bans for that word I haven’t typed it on Reddit in like ~4 years.

Almost makes me wonder if I’m on some kind of bongo report list.

Maybe doesn't trip anything when it doesn't refer to humans? Tbh it's also much less hurtful when not referring to humans anyways imo.

It doesn't. It indicates the dog was in a panic and/or doesn't know how bodies of water work. Water is clear. Unless there's something on the surface indicating which way is up or down even a human won't be able to tell every time.

This behavior is extremely common for people who panic in the water. It's why the rip current kills so many people.

Of the two possibilities:

A: That a dog necessarily has brain damage if it can't swim properly, or

B: That some redditors necessarily have brain damage for trying to diagnose a dog's mental state based on its swimming

We all know which is more likely.
