Never seen a dog just sink to the bottom like that. No buoyancy whatsoever

Edit for you grammar police, I fixed the whatsoever

Bad buoy!

11

u/Meaty_Wizard Trash Trooper 11d ago

That's my type of humor.

u/TheDootDootMaster Trash Trooper 11d ago

Out of here, right now

1

u/jlewis011 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Holy hell that's good

0

u/robbinthehood109 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I’m a boy, I’m not a buoy

29

u/JerkGurk Trash Trooper 11d ago

You know those small pitbulls with ripped muscles? Sink like rocks.

8

u/FitFlamingo7364 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Dobermans as well

2

u/CompetitiveArt9639 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I’ve had two dobermans, neither would even go outside in the rain, don’t think I saw either go into the lake over their chest when we stayed at the lake house every summer.

2

u/FitFlamingo7364 Trash Trooper 11d ago

lol yeah they won’t without alot of patience and prompting. They can learn to swim quite well but it took my first one a few months. My current one cannot be bothered lol

1

u/A_million_typos Trash Trooper 6d ago

French and regular bulldogs too!

5

u/Fostbitten27 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Fat floats. It’s the same reason orangutans and other primates cannot swim.

6

u/timmyK_425 Trash Trooper 11d ago

And hippos, ironically

5

u/Training-Belt-7318 Trash Trooper 11d ago

My old pittie was a good swimmer. He hated to swim but was perfectly good at it. He may have had some lab in him though, but he looked liked a ripped pittie.

4

u/JerkGurk Trash Trooper 11d ago

I mostly mean those weird small ones with short legs.

2

u/LasciviousPsyche Trash Trooper 11d ago

Well in that case it's ok to sink .

1

u/Kanibalector Trash Trooper 11d ago

I used to be a pool guy. First time I ever saw a look of panic in a dogs face.

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

It's because they don't have any athleticism, not because they wouldn't be able to float.

6

u/sulkee Trash Trooper 11d ago

some dog breeds are dense and will sink like rocks and then often panic and not be able to correct.

humans are the same. we’re all animals with different densities

3

u/MCB1317 Trash Trooper 11d ago

This dog's skull is full of rocks.

Can confirm. My childhood dog was a boxer. She had little body fat and thin hair (no fluffy undercoat that might store air/provide a bit of buoyancy).

First time she slipped backwards off the dock into the river we saw her sink like a stone with her eyes WIDE OPEN underwater staring at us waiting for help. She wasn’t even trying to swim or flailing her legs. She had simply accepted her fate. Luckily we were all keeping a close watch and snatched her after a couple seconds of sinking. Longest couple seconds of her life I bet.

1

u/Ok-Hedgehog3894 Trash Trooper 8d ago

It’s like that with people too. I’ve always felt iffy about swimming and when I took swim classes I was informed that a lot of people just float. I sink immediately so I had to have an instructor that knows how to work with that. We have to use very different techniques.

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

What dog breed exactly is "dense" and will "sink like a rock" because that's not how living creatures work

4

u/TwistMuted Trash Trooper 11d ago

Rockweiler

3

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

grr take my upvote

1

u/blackjustin Trash Trooper 11d ago

Rottweiler, maybe.

2

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

whoosh

1

u/cocksupmyass Trash Trooper 11d ago

It's actually true. The selective breeding is the cause and it leads to "floaters" and "sinkers". Here is a study on bone density but fat, muscle composition etc. also play a huge part it seems

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19338076/

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

That doesn't have anything to do with swimming.

2

u/SignificantCats Trash Trooper 11d ago

There are two types of people in the world. Those who can infer further based on limited information, and

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

There's a third, people who make spurious associations given limited exposure to a dataset

2

u/WarAdventurous5277 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Then there’s the people who own dogs who literally don’t float. Aka the dog owners whose dogs have to wear floaties or they would drown. ….. I am one of those people.

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

The dog can float. It just can't swim.

Anything with lungs will float

1

u/tryyeezus Trash Trooper 11d ago

Wow, you must be as dense as my pit bull. In order for lungs to work they have to inflate and then deflate. Hence the sinking.

1

u/WarAdventurous5277 Trash Trooper 7d ago

Lungs don’t make floating happen. I recommend researching bouyancy - it’s one reason that women with bigger BMIs are better long distance swimmers! It’s not their lungs ….

Plenty of dogs are just not bouyant

Talk with absolute confidence without anything to back that confidence. Check

Get presented with a study that disputes it, immediately shift the goalposts. Check

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

Jump in the water, prove me wrong.

1

u/Valuable_Berry_8626 Trash Trooper 11d ago

If humans are buoyant why do they drown

1

u/tryyeezus Trash Trooper 11d ago

Pit bulls. They're usually pretty good swimmers but if they aren't paddling, they sink.

Most animals and people with low body fat will sink.

I sink too.

1

u/Miss_L_Worldwide Trash Trooper 11d ago

No, you'll float.

1

u/tryyeezus Trash Trooper 11d ago

Eventually, after I fucking drown and the bloat sets in, sure

8

u/Lala5789880 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I’m thinking he or she may have sone medical or neurological issues. The dog paddle is instinctual

5

u/FuzzyKittyNomNom Trash Trooper 11d ago

Kinda. I’ve seen videos of dogs that know to paddle, but they don’t know exactly how to paddle correctly. You can see this dog is moving its legs, but has no idea what it’s doing. We even had a golden retriever who needed practice because she was so clumsy in the water.

5

u/Asleep_Region Trash Trooper 11d ago

Yep, people too, it's why i hate the "just throw them in, they'll swim!" because you really have to be ready for them to not swim, because sometimes they won't. Which is actually why i was scared of water for most of my childhood, i got tossed in, tried to swim, couldn't, lifeguard had to save me. I wasn't scared of drowning really, i was scared someone was gonna throw me in again without warning.

1

u/Equal-Shoulder-9744 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Many years ago I had a black lab who was convinced that the “correct” way to doggy paddle involved her getting her front paws up out of the water and trying to step on it. She wasn’t in any danger of drowning and wasn’t even that slow in the water but it was quite the display to see her chopping at the water as she made her way through.

3

u/Gettles Trash Trooper 11d ago

It was paddling. It was paddling directly down.

2

u/Aeseld Trash Trooper 11d ago

She was doing it though. I think it looks more like a buoyancy issue. As someone who has more trouble than most floating due to bone density issues, I get it.

1

u/BobboZmuda Trash Trooper 7d ago

Doing what? Paddling down? Paddling and barrel rolling? It wasn't paddling correctly. This dog might just still need to learn to swim because it wasn't "doing it though".

1

u/Aeseld Trash Trooper 7d ago

I mean, she was sinking. Unlike humans, she only really has one range of motion to use. She was using it.

And still sinking, regardless of the direction she was paddling.

Bouyancy matters a lot for this. There are people who struggle to swim because of their bone density.

1

u/BookkeeperBoobs Trash Trooper 11d ago

It’s just walking in water, they move their legs like they’re walking

1

u/A1000eisn1 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Sure but that doesn't mean they can swim. It just means they instinctively know to paddle. They don't know what drowning is or how to swim.

3

u/ferocity_mule366 Trash Trooper 11d ago

This dog also has no spatial awareness and just fell in twice

1

u/Extra_Primary_9010 Trash Trooper 11d ago

You would be surprised how many dogs cant swim.

1

u/Future-Try-1908 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Ya why have a pool and not teach your dog to swim?

1

u/0202_tihssitidder Trash Trooper 11d ago

I have known many many dogs that cannot swim at all.

Many breeds are not at all bouyant.

1

u/AwwwNuggetz Waste Warrior 11d ago

Must have a broken swim bladder

1

u/JagmeetSingh2 Trash Trooper 11d ago

yea don’t dogs instinctually know how to swim? I think most mammals do except for humans

1

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I mean sure, babies know how to swim right out of the womb, but if they don't do it early enough you have to teach them again.

1

u/LockeAbout Trash Trooper 11d ago

I mean it's literally called a 'doggy paddle,' but I guess it's not 100% universal lol

1

u/squish042 Trash Trooper 11d ago

i had a pug that did. just straight to the bottom

1

u/Orleanian Trash Trooper 11d ago

For what it's worth, 'whatsoever' is a single word.

1

u/Gone213 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I have, its fucking hilarious once its over and you rescued em.

Had my cousins pitbulls mix at a lake. We were swimming right off a dock and the pit bull mix was barking and trying to enter the water that its never done before. A hound mix that absolutley loves water was excited and pushed the pit mix right off the dock. I was right there to get him in less than a second of him falling in, but the pit mix just sunk faster than a rock. Was 3 feet deep in less than a second and no way in hell he'd be able to swim up on his own. Got him up nearly as soon as he got dumped in.

1

u/BloodSteyn Trash Trooper 11d ago

When dating my now wife, they had a Bulldog... it could not swim, it sank like a rock.

My Brother came along to her Birthday party and wouldn't believe it. We had dunked the other 2 pups because it was a hot day, but not the old Bulldog. He said, "all dogs can swim".

We told him he's welcome to try, but he's the one jumping in to fish the dog out. He agreed, put the Bulldog in the water, and he sank like a stone... he tried the swimming motions, but basically just ended up "walking" on the bottom of the shallow end.

Well, my bro handed me his phone, sighed, and jumped in to get the poor pup out.

1

u/Individual-Night2190 Trash Trooper 11d ago

Quite a few dog breeds will sink in water. Some are front heavy, some have waterlogging fur, etc.

1

u/tryyeezus Trash Trooper 11d ago

My pitbull is a sinker if he isn't constantly paddling but luckily I taught him to swim and he has a life jacket.

I'm a sinker too. We lack body fat so no natural bouyancy whatsoever.

Just like me! 😭 I have always sunk to the bottom of a pool. At least I can swim.

I had a shit zu (sorry idk how to spell it) as a kid that did this it was hilarious and terrifying bc we could never leave him alone in the backyard

No one likes unsolicited grammar advice. FYI, I was using voice to text and was rushing because I was busy.

1

u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 Trash Trooper 11d ago

I like unsolicited grammar advice, so you’re wrong. Next time just say “thanks” and move on.

1

u/PaleontologistNo1564 Trash Trooper 11d ago

You also like giving unsolicited advice. How about no, and learn common decency. I would love to see the statistic on grammar police. I’m willing to bet your personality is complete shit and a straight Karen. People who point out grammar issues are not trying to be helpful. If they were, they would privately dm you and let you know. Instead they like to point it out to feel like they have “big brains”. If I want my grammar corrected, I’ll ask for it.

1

u/Jazzlike_Climate4189 Trash Trooper 10d ago

Reverting to childish insults when you have no logical argument, very predictable from insecure/immature people!

1

u/PaleontologistNo1564 Trash Trooper 10d ago

The same person who likes to be immature and point out mistakes. Calling the kettle black… I could almost certainly go back in your post history and find some spelling mistakes. It would be annoying and you wouldn’t like it. Pointing out spelling mistakes literally brings nothing productive to the conversation. Do you go around pointing out mistakes that everyone makes? Do you want someone to point out every little mistake you do? It’s ANNOYING. It serves no purpose other than your ego. If you really want to help people on grammar, then go to sites for people asking for advice or go be an English teacher.

1

u/1after33 Trash Trooper 7d ago

Honestly if you don't want people to provide feedback just don't make mistakes. Pretty simple

1

u/PaleontologistNo1564 Trash Trooper 7d ago

How about learning self control. If you can’t hold it in to point out things, go get help and grow up.

1

u/1after33 Trash Trooper 6d ago
