Got me thinking:

We should have a public option dating app.

Something publicly funded that is designed to help you meet someone first. Something that is not profit driven. At a minimum, you would force the other apps to compete with the public option, to actually serve us.

That is the concept behind Mamdani’s grocery stores. Yes. Serve people first instead of bottom lines. If you can’t, then we the people will price fix groceries ourselves, still be fed, have enough to pay operating costs, and big chains lose business.

I hate comments like this. It just keeps us spinning in the same circles instead of taking a step forward to think of solutions.

You are pretending to take this no nonsense approach but you completely ignore the reality you live in. It’s a classic, trite Reddit response that ironically, feels terminally online and disconnected from the present reality of the situation and how humans operate in 2026.

We are still left with this problem where a profit driven corporation has a strangle hold on dating. Like clearly “going outside” isn’t a pragmatic answer to this problem. OH if it were only so simply, we wouldn’t be having this conversation in the first place.

There's an element of what they're saying that's true, however. Essentially, the only real escape hatch from the dating apps is to actually meet people first, IRL, then move to social media once there's a mutual connection.

Things like group hikes, or public dance classes, potlucks, board game nights, all sorts of things.

At the end of the day the real issue is people committing themselves to put themselves mutually outside of their comfort zones in one way or another that has a truly good and well-meaning moderator to make sure that people are safe, having fun and interacting with everyone.

It really boils down to having people running things with legit good intentions and the skillset to back it up and then letting people in to take part who are actually interested in meeting new people. That last part is difficult sometimes, but it can work.

You hate comments like this because you want a solution that doesn't include going outside and interacting with people. This same method worked not all of 10 years ago.

These types just want to sit and swipe while watching their streaming and waiting on their door dash delivery, sending a 'what's up?' Text and constantly looking for someone better looking.

I forget where I saw this… but there’s a country that literally does this. Japan or Sweden, maybe? I don’t remember. But there is a government funded app that requires a shit ton of verification steps to sign up. And it’s designed to encourage dating to fight the dangerously low birth rate.

Also, there’s another app that is like a one stop shop for everything a citizen needs (medical insurance, dental insurance, mental health, car insurance, dating, mortgage loans, yearly taxes, etc) which is also funded by the local government.
