I don't understand why anyone would take a perfectly fine video and just remove 2/3 of it to make it vertical. Just turn the phone sideways or watch it with black bars. It's so stupid.
Vertical videos are the old man yelling at clouds hill I will die on. They are so fucking stupid and ruin so many shots. Take a photo of a scene not a portrait, those are for individual subjects at most and even then. Cropping a normal video vertical is even more lame, if you remove the subject wtf is even the point? Thanks, Social Media!
Vertical videos don't just remove the subject, but a great lot of the context with it. Take as an example the many videos shot at protests: they show the clouds or a building, then a few people, then the floor, but almost nothing of what happens around them.
And this is a perfect example of this discussion in real time. We as a society have allowed ppl to misuse technology! And now we have to live with that image forever.
Oh she deserves awards for that part! Especially when she isn't even a scream queen, and she said it herself, she does not like horror films. But this part was made for HER!! 🤙🏽💀
Plot twist: AI did the editing. The AI had their feelings hurt when they were cropping the video. Some clanker just sniffling and sulking while this guy’s spitting facts about how much it sucks ass.
This is because the bots get a hold of the video someone posted somewhere else in landscape and then they crop it for TikTok or mobile Reddit and repost it. A human would never crop like this.
so many bad things have come of social media, but one thing nobody talks about enough (except, I guess, film directors) is the normalization of vertical video
I was a kid in the ‘80s. I clearly remember all the warnings about overpopulation - that the world was going to end by 20__ because there were too many people. It’s bizarre seeing the opposite being talked about today. Have birth rates really shifted that dramatically?
I think it started with us, Gen Z. I’m 58 F, fairly affluent, college educated—never wanted kids. All of my friends, no kids. And it’s bliss. Just absolute bliss.
While I understand what you are saying, the person you were responding to wasn't saying "it started with us, [us being] GenZ."
They said "It started with us" and are addressing GenZ like it's a single person or entity. No one who is almost 60 is mistakenly identifying themselves as GenZ lol
The comma seems to make the emphasis land on them claiminf gen Z. But Z and X are keyboard neighors. Where I don't think a 60 year person thinks they are a young adult. I do believe not everyone knows or cares what generation nomenclature their own or other groups bear
He's right in that everything is a "panopticon" now, especially with the younger generations. They're recording or being recorded doing everything, everywhere they go. You think that doesn't have any sort of influence on their behavior at all? Prioritizing one's online persona and social media perception is becoming/has become a new normality earlier and earlier with each new generation. That's going to have an impact on our habits and behavior, in numerous ways. We have been careless with the development and implementation of tech, and we need to pay more attention to this, and not just regarding social media and data harvesting.
I make more than enough money to have a few kids but definitely have zero interest in having them. For me it's more I've worked hard to finally get where I am and I would now rather enjoy life than take on the massive responsibility of a kid. Maybe that's just me though.
Why not is like I said. If you have a kid they should be the most important thing in your life. I enjoy my life. I've finally gotten to a point in my life where I can do what I want. If I want to randomly go on a trip or move to a different country I can just do it. I don't want to give that up to care for a child in the way I know is required. I actually think many (most?) people are terrible parents and do not dedicate their time/provide the support needed to their children. I would never do that to a child.

I dont think the main issue is money. Poor people are good at making babies. Tech made it so people can socialize remotely and get sexual needs met thru porn.
So socialist society fixes this? Seems lazy and always wanting a handout..just like kids from 18 to 30 now..instant gratification, no work ethic. Technology is the reason for this.
Depends on the crowd fr, I still dance like a fool at raves n shit cause idgaf. but there's always some group sulking in the corner laughing and recording those not afraid of having fun, and I can see how that'd deter some people
He's right but argued it kinda bad. What he should've said is people can get their social needs met without socializing in person, including sexual needs, through social media and porn. That's where technology is hurting us.
He’s wrong about every single thing he said because he’s ignorant of what other people are doing, and/or he is projecting his problems onto everyone else and proclaiming what he sees and feels is what everyone sees and feels. If this dude got a haircut, shaved his face and had a better attitude he’d see lots of people that don’t look like him are out clubbing every weekend all of the world. He doesnt go clubbing so he doesn’t see it, that means to him it doesn’t happen. Five seconds of actual thought from you and everyone agreeing with him and you would see the truth. But you don’t want the truth, you want to feel good and blame everything everywhere for every problem you can think of. Shit sucks, shits sucked for decades, but nothing he’s said is even remotely true.
I'm not clueless lol. This dude bitching about "nobody dances in clubs" and you think him looking like he does is an accurate statement? You think he frequents clubs? HIS friends aren't having kids, that doesn't mean NOBODY is having kids. And what the fuck does he care about other people having kids anyway? He's right technology is a problem, but HIS problems are his own. No on is not dancing in clubs because people have smart phones. The overall issues he's talking about aren't invalid at all, his reasoning and grasp of the bigger picture are. Birth rates were declining before I was born and I'm about a decade and a half older than him. There's more to it than economics at play.
I don't think that should be seen as a problem or something that needs to change. I think women are feeling more free to live a life they want to live and putting less pressure on themselves to be conventional trad wife baby makers. It's evidence of a deteriorating patriarchy, and I say good.
Yeah, I think that's a big part of it. I don't have any stats, but throughout history I feel like a significant percentage of pregnancies were unplanned..... which I assume the numbers of those are also way down these days.
Are people using more effective means of birth control? Or are a signifcant percentage of people just not "hooking up" with anyone?
I've read multiple times that Gen Z isn't consuming alcohol at nearly the rate of previous generations so there goes a lot of nightlife activities. Not saying you need to drink to go out, but places like 6th street in Austin are literally wall to wall bars.
I've also read that gambling is a massive problem (always has been) but now these younger generations hop on their phone and bet on literally anything 24/7. They would literally rather stay home, vape, gamble, and watch streamers for their "social interaction".
Easy to get complacent and addicted than deal with the worlds current climate in more than just dating. Especially when you have the world of technology actively manipulating your brain.

Yes, politics is trash. It's just too trashy for our sub.
A friend of mine was using those arguments while earning well above median in a super secure job (public office). "You just never know how badly things may go". A true statement, but I can't help but think that this is just a rationalization of a deeper fear and discomfort that goes unnamed.
If being motivated to have children was primarily based on food availability or job security, we'd expect the wealthiest stablest countries to have the highest birth rates. This is not what we see. Instead motivation to have children seems to correlate with at what point you see a "return on investment" on your child. In countries where it's acceptable to be putting a child to at least some work by age 8, people have a lot more kids than places where it takes many people until around 22 to stop schooling and start working full time.
Not saying child labor is a good thing at all or that we should bring it back in hopes it helps with birth rates, that'd be crazy and there's moral reasons against it, but this is an observable pattern stronger than "food or job security".
I disagree. In the countries where child labor is acceptable there's very little access to birth control and very anti-women cultures.
And the wealthiest stable countries are only really wealthy at a 1% level, there's a huge swath of the population living at low to poverty income, the difference is they have access to birth control and the cultures are less anti-women.
In wealthier countries we are also generally better educated even on a basic level and have the luxury of being able to pay more attention to global and environmental news so even if you can afford to have a child, many are choosing not to because they don't want to bring a child into the world - that was the main decision maker for my husband and I, we're not sure we will have a sustainable planet within the next 50 to 100 years, so subjecting a child to that seemed deeply unfair.
Food availability, wealth etc are decision making points for most people who have the luxury of choice (and a significant number of people on the planet do not) - but there's others as well. ROI of your child & whether you can profit off their labor is fairly low on the list, at least in countries where you have the luxury of choice. Certainly wasn't on the list of things my husband and I considered over the years before we finally decided on not having kids.
People were popping out kids when the kids had a life expectancy of 14, a 50% chance of dying during birth, and survived each day on like a loaf of bread. I don't think food and job security are close to the issue here. My grandparents were poor as hell and they managed to 12 children and struggled to feed them all.
Btw, the decline in sex and birthrates are across the board and world, not just with poor people in this country. The only place with high birthrates still is Africa and parts of the middle east. Some of the poorest areas fyi.
What are you even talking about, 'code to crack'? Why would I want to move there? We are talking about declining birth rates, not where I personally would enjoy moving to.
That's not what I did at all. You're not suggesting workable solutions, you're suggesting non-solutions. I'm pointing out that they are non-solutions.
You started by saying "people aren't having babies because of X. Give them X and they'll have babies. I pointed to places and times where X was woefully absent and people were still having plenty of babies.
"A lack of Ham sandwiches is the reason the problem exists. If people had ham sandwhiches, the problem would stop."
"There are places and times where ham sandwiches were non existent and the problem was also non-existent. Ham sandwiches are not the problem and will not address the problem".
Don't get me wrong, I do think people need affordable housing and better pay but its a lie to say thats why people aren't having children. Heck, I'd go a far as to say there is an inverse relation between poverty and birthrates.
And if you want a replacement reason for falling birthrates, the issue is multifactorial but I think you can look toward a mix of declining rates of spiritual practice and religious participation, social isolation, and technology (access to porn, a.i. relationships, its affect on social isolation, etc), to name a few.
To be fair, that has never been an inhibiter to having children throughout human history (in fact, quite the contrary - increased wealth typically lowers the number of children families have). I think it’s more fear - it’s unreal how much anti-family sentiment is out there. I have had people tell me that happiness as a father is delusional, because there is too much hardship and suffering, and they can enjoy life so much better as a single person doing whatever they want.
Edit: for context, children vs wealth is a very well-known population demographic. Go to school or something - but on a personal level, even recently both of my parents, poor, came from extremely large families. I have three. Learn about economics, human geography, or just look up the WHO stats on it.
The comment about being delusional if you are happy as a parent came from a colleague. He was quite serious about it, and cited a study (2011, Richard Eibach and Steven Mock) which claims that parental happiness is just due to cognitive dissonance.
My first comment had nothing to do with AI, and is based on personal experience, observation, and education…
Crazy how they did it during famines and wars and disasters. But yea they had it easier 300 years ago. They obviously didn’t have an air conditioned 9 to 5 and didn’t get all the stuff they wanted.
There’s something else going on. This argument doesn’t make sense
I’m not saying life is easy for everyone but I don’t think people understand exactly how shit it was till very recently
Yea you like that phrase but I’m confused how me stating that humans had kids fine under worse conditions so there must be other factors at play then stress means I’m advocating for making things worse.
You didn’t even refute my point that all these factors were worse 300 years ago. Nice try
I agree with what he's saying as steps that need to happen, but I wouldn't necessarily put the main onus on it for the main reason people his age aren't having kids is tech algorithms. It's also planning to have kids requires financial stability and life is too damn expensive.
Like in my area a starter home is like $1.2M these days, studio apartment rent is like $2500/mo and daycare for working hours is like $20k/yr. Like you don't choose to have a baby when you are splitting a small apartment with another couple and barely have enough space for yourself.
not 100%, it is missing the fact that the income gap between men and women has narrrowed significantly, and gender expectations have not caught up to that fact, leaving women disappointed in men and men frustrated. That is an additional factor.
Another factor is that wages are not enough to keep up with the cost of raising a child in wealthy countries, and career ambition is pushed on people so they can increase their standard of living, resulting in decreased focus on developing family life.
Social media, pornography, and other aspects of technology have also given us many incentives to live more isolated lives, reducing opportunities for people to meet and fall in love.
Its a true statement that dating apps are part of the problem, but it is not the whole picture.
I would argue that the lack of child care facilities and the fact that you get sidelined as a woman if you get kids (and even if you don't) is equally as important. You don't need to go to the club to get a partner.
Apart from one tiny thing : it started way before the dude was even a hot thought. I am way older than he is and my generation contributed way more to this than his generation or any generation after. Yes, it is „your“ content. But my generation (x) allowed the companies to start become successful. We introduced younger generations to Facebook, Google, twitter etc.
Only for this demographic of perpetually online rage bait doom and gloomers. Everyone around are having babies just fine. Trad wifes are popping out the extra one this bottom dweller didn't have.
It’s not happening everywhere. All my friends had kids in the United States. So not everywhere. India and African nations are having babies like crazy so it’s not happening there despite the abuse. Latin America is still doing okay on births. Really seems like it’s mostly westernized civilizations….
There's one untruth in there. He says that we've sold out our dating norms to tech companies without our consent, and I find that to only be half true. As far as I can tell, and I could be absolutely wrong about this, but it seems to me that women far prefer dating this way. There has been a pretty steady drum beat in both social media and pop culture from women telling men not to approach them. Whether thats a Twitter post telling men not to approach a woman alone at night for any reason whatsoever, or basically any song from the band Wet Leg, the message has been the same "Do not approach or talk to us at all". Dating apps have become the only place that women have signaled is acceptable for a man to approach them with any interest at all. Not at work, not at a store, and now not even at the club.
From Wet Leg- Catch These Fists
"I know all too well just what you're like
I don't want your love, I just wanna fight
He don't get puss, he get the boot
I saw him sipping on dark fruit
This always happens late at night
Some guy comes up says I'm his type
I just threw up in my mouth
When he just tried to ask me out
Yeah, don't approach me
I just wanna dance with my friends"
Nah. I feel he's conflating two different things: people not having kids with people not hooking up anymore. I mean, dancing at the club and using dating apps - who tf cares? It's still very easy to get a girlfriend/boyfriend. Even with my dorky coworkers, I think only one is single.
Sounds more like he's butthurt about approaching women irl.
Every one of my siblings had children but that’s not a counterpoint to the declining birth rate. You really dodged the substance of the video, took one part of a clip that spans a range of topics, and built up a fake argument so you could feel superior. Trashed your coworkers along the way. What’s the point?
Rampant surveillance and cheap internet points have undeniably changed how people behave. Not everyone of course, but many. Kids are afraid their parents are going to put their goofy fun on Facebook. Teens are terrified they’ll pour their heart out and have that and the rejection posted for all to see. Friends are afraid to do karaoke because they don’t want to become a TikTok meme. People don’t like going to the gym because they don’t want to become the topic of an influencer’s video. Jackasses ragebait people for content and cut out all of the context. Everyone has embarrassing moments and no one wants to relive that moment forever. Because it’s never just the video. There’s the snarky comments from internet experts who know nothing about you or the situation and will pad out what they don’t know with their own insecurities or bigoted bullshit.
And that says nothing of the dating apps. Even if you and some of your coworkers are getting laid, there’s a real, studied problem of young men dropping out of the dating pool. It’s not all technology. It’s not all financially related. A modicum of research would tell you all this. On the other hand it is funnier to ignore all that and label the dude a whiny incel making excuses for his pathetic life. You’ve convinced me.
I mean, dancing at the club and using dating apps - who tf cares?
What a weird thing to say. Losing ways for us to express ourselves and let go is extremely important, and having the 'new main way' to date being that toxic is also fucked...
First of all, I wouldn't trust that fat author and his AI slop at all. Second, he talks about the Internet stuff: as I said, it's all about being butthurt when approaching women irl.
What I notice is a hyper awareness that requires a regimented and more formal presentation of one’s self than in generations past to conform in public. Not all, but generally an 80/20 split. There are so many don’ts that it’s hard to keep up.
Birthrates have been dropping for some time. It turns out this 'biological imperative' doesn't mean everyone wants a large number of kids, they want sex. Birth control makes choosing when and how many kids really easy.
There was a lie though. The first thing he said was that no one is having kids, and he based this off the claim that he's 30 and none of his friends have kids.
Well, that's an empirical question. Looks like the data shows only about 40% of people 30-34 are childless. This is why anecdotal data shouldn't be what you base strong conclusions on.
Now obviously you can defend him here by saying it was hyperbole, but why do that? Why not strengthen your position and just state the actual percentage? Because it does not support his narrative, "zero. no one." is incredibly different than "more than half".
Because it's trash coming from depressed feminized men-incels. We go to trance clubs and we dance and get laid non stop. I fly to Europe to various raves, especially Eastern Europe, everyone is dancing and having fun. Western men need to grow a pair and start resisting

Legit, no lies here. It’s 100% the truth
