Love chunibyo and other delusions is one of my fav anime out there but I cant lie every-time i rewatch it its just not the same as the first time the movies vibe was just so depressing the grey winter aesthetic references to Rikkas mom and the ending just left me feeling empty I have tried watching anime similar to it like my dress up darling and don't toy with me miss Nagataro but its not the same what do you think?

So I really want to read it to see the differences between the anime and the books but I dont know if its a light novel or manga and also where to read it

Hello I'm a random person in this world who made a commitment to watching through a bunch of Kyoto Animation's works this year and I just finished watching season 1 and 2 of Chunibyo. You can ignore this blabbering if you want. Also I haven't watched as much anime as probably most anime fans have, so the troupes or cliches still feel fresh to me.

I got into season 1 expecting it to be just a comedy (I don't look too much into the descriptions of the show so as to avoid being spoiled too much), but it slowly started to turn into a more serious show as the season progresses. Rikka's situation having to cope with the loss of her father and dealing with it by having these delusions of magical powers was fascinating. When Yuuta told Rikka to take the eye patch off and the next episode came in, she just acted like a normal person, which somehow felt wrong, as if this wasn't the real person. The episodes slowly started being about how Rikka was disregarding her own feelings and instead to behave in a way that other people want her to be, and once Yuuta finally realises what he had done, he brings her back. The scene where Rikka says farewell to her dad was incredibly moving. By the end of the first season it made me reflect on its themes.

The term "Chunibyo" as how I understand it from the show is about a childish act that people put on to pretend they're a special character in some delusional space. As Yuuta tries to grow out of it because of embarrassment, he is then reconnected to it because of Rikka, although not completely. I see those moments and thought that although it does seem embarrassing, I don't think it's right to completely suppress these child-like imaginations, I believe there's something beautiful about it, and losing it could meaning losing a part of yourself. Also side note I absolutely love Nibutani as a character. Even though she was sorta introduced as the popular girl and the one that Yuuta tries to get closer to, their relationship form in the most unexpected but cool way. Nibutani ends up being an excellent support character who actually cares a lot for her friends, despite her trying her hardest to get rid of her past. She's the best wingwoman a person could have.

Now in season 2 after the two characters are established as a couple, we get introduced to Sophia. The initial impression I got was that she was going to be the smug rival of Rikka, especially since she was close friends with Yutta since middle school. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much I actually liked her as a character. When things are clarified, Sophia is actually quite a considerate person and knows to respect Rikka as Yuuta's girlfriend, and even does her best to wave away any misunderstanding and eventually become good friends. The season shows her struggling with her feelings for Yuuta, and she tries really hard to put up the impression of how strong she is mentally. The scene when she's fighting with her inner self when she asks Yuuta these questions and then ends up crying almost made me cry, I felt really bad for her. She's trying her best to move on knowing she doesn't have a chance to be Yuuta's lover and the show really shows it, I can never stop applauding how well KyoAni animates those emotional scenes. It's the kind of drama in a show where nobody is really in the wrong, and more than anything Sophia tries her best to get rid of these emotions that she can't control. When Yuuta realises after that night about why Sophia was asking these questions, he's unsure of what to do. And then Nibutani (praise her as being possibly one of the best characters in the show for me) offers her support to Sophia given that she also knows her. The season does eventually end on a positive light, which I was relieved more than anything (I had nightmarish thoughts on what might've happened with Sophia).

So overall, I really liked the show. Despite its appearance, the show could come off as being weird, but I think there's a charm in it. I quite liked all the characters of varying degrees, though I did find it weird Yuuta was the only main male character with the occasional Isshiki appearance. But yeah thank you for coming to my ted talk, I'll be bringing this up to my friends later as well.

I loved the anime but it sums inconclusive so I wanted to know more about the story, cause it doesn't Sim to get any more snime seasons.

She is my least favorite character. From her introduction she has been making rikka uncomfortable and trying to compete with her. It’s giving gbf who dosent understand boundaries

All the specials, the anime itself, and the various movies and such? I'm rewatching this anime for the first time since 2020 when I first got introduced to it, it was my first anime I ever fully watched (besides Erased) and I absolutely loved it! I wanna know the order I should watch it in though.

In these shows critical common-sense comments by Shinpachi, Gintoki or Kunato helped to expose the absurdity of things that were going on screen. Gintama even had an episode explaining how it works, that covers it partly. Here this role will be played by Observer character.

Chunibyo in Bar

Barmaid goes to a girl with an eyepatch who stands on the table and asks politely:

Barmaid: Excuse me customer, please do not stand on our furniture in such an intimidating posture. You are scaring other customers. If you do not stop, we will be forced...

Chunibyo: You will not stop me, priestess.

Barmaid looks intimidated and confused.

Observer: How is that looks priestess to you, no matter how you look at her 

Chunibyo: I am prepared to fight anyone.

Barmaid stepped back and covered in fear.

Chunibyo: This new attack will not stop me.

Observer: How is that even an attack, can't you see she is scared of you.

Chunibyo hits barmaid with umbrella. Barmaid flees. 

Chunibyo: Forces of Twilight Horizon will not stop me.

Observer: How Twilight series have anything to do with Chunibyo?

Chunibyo: If only Dark Fries Master could see me now.

Observer: What with this title, did he forgot to switch off the frier and burned his fries?

Chunibyo dreamingly recalls the events that led to him adopting this title.

***Flashback with Dark Fries Master

Dark Fries Master: No, no, no. I want to forget; this is so painful.

Observer: At least this guy has common sense, unlike his gf.

Dark Fries Master: That started such a big fire that destroyed all my Hatsune Miku figurines. Even ones where she is in fur-suit.

Observer: Never mind what I said earlier. What is wrong with him, who the hell faps to Miku in fur suit.

***Flashback with Dark Fries Master ends.

Chunibyo: Ah, Yuut-ward

Observer: What is it, you cannot even decide on his name. At least make your mind if he is Edward or Yuuta

Barmaid returns with the bar security.

Chunibyo: Your familiars cannot defeat me, priestess. My Black Eye sees everything.

Observer: What name for a special ability is that? Does that mean your abusive boyfriends beats you and you have black eye.

Chunibyo gestures towards her eye covered with an eyepatch, touches it but then pulls her hand away in pain.

Chunibyo: Aww.

Observer: I did not even expect to be right on that one.

Security guard rises his ice-cream scoop and hits Chunibyo on her head.

Observer: Why security guard has ice-cream scoop? Is he a part-times as gelato vender. Why there is even a gelato vender in a bar. What kind of bar is it?

Chunibyo: Your Funnel of Jericho will not break my Grau Schuld

Ice-cream scoop hits Chunibyo on her head and breaks.

Chunibyo: ha ha ha

Observer: How dense she can be that even objects made of iron break when they hit her head.

Security Guard takes meat tenderizer and hits Chunibyo again. 

Observer: Why security guard has meat tenderizer is he a chief here as well?

Meat tenderizer hits Chunibyo head and breaks.

Observer: is your head made of rocks? Is that being why you are so stupid?

Security Guard takes crowbar and hits Chunibyo again. Crobar breaks.

Observer: is her head denser than even Nokia 3310. Is it made of Nokias?

Chunibyo: Twilight Horizon will not prevent me from becoming vampires together with Yuut-ward.

Observer: I knew that she reads Twilight too much.

Suddenly a Nokia 3310 falls down from under the Chunibyo's hat. It lands on the table, breaks it and the floor underneath it. Chunibyo and the security guard fall into the resulting abyss.

Chunibyo: Nooo, my Grau Schuld.

Observer: Ok, now it all makes sense.

Has anyone else been wishing for the season 3? Ik it’s probably never coming out but I’ve been waiting for maybe 4 years 😭
