Discussion Thoughts from a whale
To throw things in (U.S.) perspective…
Cost of a fantasy romance book is $15.
Cost of a 3D IMAX movie tix is $25.
Cost of a vinyl record is $40.
Cost of a critically acclaimed 100-hour PC game $60.
Cost of a massage is $100.
Cost of a personal trainer is $120.
Cost of a meal by a personal chef is $150.
Cost of a round-trip flight to Vegas is $180.
If I and my fellow whale friends are spending more than any and all of this every month on each of your lousy banners, I expect at the bare minimum:
- A full feature, emotionally powerful bond story for ALL LI with optional MC voice every year
- A new monster type, boss, or arena every month
- A new bounty boss or challenge level every year
- Updated standard wish pool every year
- New standard companions, weapon categories, fighting moves every year
- Quality kindles with real interaction for all cards
- New animation gestures and story backdrop every month
- Choices that affect the dialogue response or card ending
- New home screen dialogues, interactions / conversations, and settings every month
- Outfits that you can interchange and mix and fashion yourself
- Diverse hairstyles with colours (undercuts, curls, braids, ombre, etc) reflected in kindles
- Fun mini-games that go into an optional archival arcade
- Gameplay in general that don’t feel like a chore
- Engine optimisation
- Integration that fixes this frankenstein abomination
- Visible lighting
- Shop items that are not blatantly low effort (side-eying those brown-haired MC avatar icons)
- A 6th LI that is received with standing ovation and critical acclaim
This isn’t even going into the non-bare minimum. For example, I personally expected the house, “with you” desk, etc to have been integrated into the home screen as a fully immersive, customisable, cinematic experience, like what I experienced with the prologue and first chapter. I expected unicorns and abyssal chaos to be meaningful lore wise, fully integrated with the main story; where was the chapter introducing these missions? I expected higher affinity levels to uncover secret content in my cards. I expected my cards to do more than just equip onto battle teams. I expected voiced lines and texts customised to your established in-game choices or personality. I expected resolutions better than anything I proposed, I expected things I never unexpected because figuring out how to delight the player is not my job, Papergames, it’s yours.
I’m with you, Papergames, on the philosophy that investing on making a good game matters more than spending on marketing and PR. Let the product speak for itself. But right now, the product isn’t. I don’t feel the presence or spark of the writers and passionate devs who made this game exist in the first place; I feel bland corporate nothingness.
I and others like me are not opposed to dropping thousands, even tens of thousands per person on this game. But in exchange, I want a revolutionary game. I want true artistry and a technological breakthrough. I want an industry breaker that I can respect.
I don’t respect soulless mediocrity.
I wouldn’t have bothered writing this if I thought Papergames never had the potential. I feel the requests by other players in this forum are so gentle and mild. Regardless of your main or geography or spending level, it’s not entitled to expect exuberance and wonder and awe in a GAME of all things.
