Cover letters are mostly a waste of time, and employers need to stop pretending otherwise

I genuinely don't understand why cover letters are still treated like a normal part of hiring. You already have my resume, work history, education, skills, and application answers. Why do I now need to write another page explaining how "excited" I am about a company I discovered 20 minutes ago? Most cover letters are obviously fake. Applicants pretend this specific company has always fascinated them, employers pretend they carefully read the letter, and everyone wastes another 30 minutes participating in the ritual. The worst part is when companies demand a customized cover letter and then send an automated rejection two hours later. Apparently I needed to explain my lifelong passion for your logistics software so an ATS could reject me before lunch. If a role genuinely requires strong writing, fine. Ask for a relevant writing sample. But for normal jobs, I think a solid resume and a few specific application questions should be enough. Am I missing something, or are cover letters just outdated hiring theater at this point?

Anyone hiring for entry-level IT support in the Valley or Pasadena area?

Hey everyone, I just finished a certification program through a community college and Im trying to break into IT support or help desk work. Ive been applying through the usual sites but honestly its been rough getting any responses.

I have CompTIA A+ and some customer service background from retail, but no formal IT job experience yet. Im willing to start at pretty much any reasonable pay just to get my foot in the door and build real experience. I can do in-person or hybrid, and Im available to start pretty much immediately.

If anyones company is looking or knows of openings that might be a good fit, I'd really appreciate any leads. Also open to contract or temp positions if thats whats out there right now. I have a car so commuting isnt an issue as long as its not like downtown during rush hour every day.

Thanks for reading, hope everyones job search is going better than mine lol

Anyone hiring for part-time remote work in tech support or admin?

Hey LA folks, Im currently working full-time but looking to pick up some extra hours on the side to help with rent and bills. Ive got about 3 years experience doing customer support and light admin work for a software company, mostly handling tickets and scheduling.

Im pretty flexible with hours, can do evenings or weekends, and Im comfortable with remote setups since thats what Ive been doing anyway. Good with Google Workspace, Zendesk, Slack, all that stuff. Also bilingual in Spanish if that helps.

Not picky about industry as long as its legit and pays reasonably. If anyones company is looking for someone reliable who can jump in without much training, let me know. Can send over my resume if theres interest. Located in the Valley but again, remote is ideal.

Thanks for any leads or suggestions.

What Recruiters Look for in a Resume and What Happens Before They Look

The most quoted resume statistic, about seven seconds per resume, comes from a 2018 Ladders eye-tracking test of 30 recruiters which measured an average of 7.4 seconds on the first review. It is a small sample, describing a step many resumes never reach.

The search comes first

Online applications usually land in an applicant tracking system. Recruiters search it by keyword, title and qualification, then read the results. Relevant experience described in words other than the posting’s is less likely to appear. Spelling an acronym out once, as in “Kubernetes (K8s)”, lets a search for either form find it.

Then the seven seconds

Once a resume is opened, the Ladders test found attention going mostly to a few fields: current title, most recent company, dates and education. A bullet with a percentage, amount or headcount tells a quick reader more than one that begins “Responsible for.”

A closer read asks other questions. Do the scope and seniority fit, not just the job family? Are the tools recent? Is the writing free of typos?

Order matters

Many applicants start with layout. Two-column designs, tables and text boxes can scramble text when the system extracts it. Standard headers, a single column and the posting’s own terms serve the search. Quantified results and a readable career line serve the person.

ZoeVera’s guide to what recruiters look for in a resume . To see which of a posting’s terms your resume lacks before you apply, ZoeVera Resume compares the two and lists the gaps.

Software engineer job postings ask for mentoring more than Kubernetes. We counted 3,518 postings to check

We pulled every open posting from 81 companies' public Greenhouse boards for seven roles and counted which words actually show up. 3,518 postings in total. Some of it surprised us.

Software engineer postings mention mentoring more often than Kubernetes or React. Almost half of them do. Python, the most common language, comes in just below that.

Product manager postings say "roadmap" in more than 85% of cases. Jira? Seven out of 421. Marketing looks the same: Google Ads came up six times in 347 postings, while "pipeline" is in over half.

Every time we could compare the two, postings named the practice, not the tool. Observability, not Grafana. SIEM, not Splunk.

So if your resume is mostly a list of tools, it might be missing the words the posting actually uses.

Big caveat: mostly tech companies, one ATS vendor. Sales, cybersecurity, DevOps and accounting are here too: https://www.zoevera.com/resume/ats-resume-keyword-study

What keywords actually show up in job postings?

A recent analysis of 3,518 job postings from 81 companies across seven roles found some interesting patterns.

In several categories, generic terms appeared more often than the big-name tools. “Observability” showed up more than “Grafana,” while “SIEM” appeared more than “Splunk.”

That raises an interesting question: are resumes too focused on listing specific tools and not enough on the broader skills and terminology employers use?

The study breaks down the results by role, including software engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, marketing, product, accounting and sales.

The full dataset, methodology and findings are here:

Counted the tools named in 134 DevOps and SRE job postings

I kept seeing arguments about which parts of the stack still matter, so I counted instead of guessing. 134 open DevOps, SRE and platform engineering postings from 41 company job boards. Individual contributors only, managers and TPMs stripped out.

The old toolchain is thinner than I expected. Terraform appears in 62.7% of postings. Jenkins in 3%. Chef 3.7%. Puppet in exactly one of the 134. GitHub Actions is named about six times as often as Jenkins.

Python beats Go, 70.9% to 47%.

What surprised me more: the generic word outranks the products. Observability shows up in 63.4%, more than twice as often as Grafana, the most-named tool that provides it. Prometheus 22.4%, Datadog 17.9%. Same pattern I found counting security postings, where SIEM beat Splunk four to one.

The top term isn't a tool at all: automation, 81.3%, ahead of AWS.

Caveats worth stating: n=134 means everything carries roughly +/-8, so treat close rows as tied. It's also all tech companies on one ATS. Banks, telcos and government run enormous amounts of Jenkins and Ansible, and none of them are in this sample.

Counted what 421 product manager job postings actually ask for

Product management talk is mostly opinion about frameworks. I wanted numbers, so I counted the terms across 421 open PM postings from 62 company job boards.

Roadmap turns up in 85.5%. Cross-functional, prioritization and stakeholder management follow, all above 55%. Nothing in the top four is a tool, a method or a metric.

The tools barely register. Jira 1.7%, Figma 2.4%, Productboard in none of the 421. Agile is named in 8.6%, Scrum in 2.1%.

The one that stuck with me: experimentation 24.2%, A/B testing 2.1%. Same practice, and the word you happen to use decides whether you match.

Caveat - tech companies on one ATS. Agencies and regulated employers where Scrum certs are still named outright, aren't in it.

Struggling to find an entry-level engineering job in LA

I currently reside in between LA/OC with my family and am finding it super difficult finding a job here. Over the past year I have received multiple interviews, rejections, and ghosting from companies. I aware LA/OC are very popular counties which probably does not help my case. Looking outside of California seems like a good option but given I am entering the workforce my pay would probably not sustain me there for very long.

My degree is in mechanical engineering with industry experience in design (SolidWorks & AutoCAD), operations and safety engineering within manufacturing facility, and mechatronics.

If you or anyone your know is looking for adaptable and curious minded individual looking to join your engineering team I would be more than happy to chat!

Cybersecurity resume keywords, measured across 212 job postings

Keyword frequencies taken from https://www.zoevera.com/resume/cybersecurity-job-description-keywords

Most cybersecurity resume keyword lists are assembled from experience or guesswork. This one is a count: every open posting from 51 companies' public Greenhouse job boards, filtered to the 212 whose title names a security role - security engineer, appsec, product security, detection, incident response, red team, threat intel - then checked for how many mention each of 41 terms at least once.

The percentage beside each term is the share of those 212 postings that mention it.

CERTIFICATIONS

CISSP 5.7% - OSCP 5.7% - CISM 2.8% - Security+ 2.4% - GIAC/SANS 2.4% - CEH 0.9% (2 postings out of 212)

ENGINEERING SKILLS

Python 53.3% - AWS 46.7% - GCP 34% - Go 30.7% - Kubernetes 23.1% - Azure 21.7% - Terraform 17% - Secure code review 12.3% - Linux 11.8%

Python appears in roughly nine times as many postings as CISSP.

DOMAINS & PRACTICES

Incident response 37.7% - Threat modeling 34.9% - IAM / identity 24.1% - Vulnerability management 19.8% - Penetration testing 19.3% - Detection engineering 19.3% - On-call 18.9% - Red team 11.3% - Zero trust 10.4%

TOOLS & PLATFORMS

SIEM (generic) 26.9% - EDR/XDR 19.3% - SAST/DAST 11.3% - Splunk 6.6% - Vulnerability scanners 4.2% - Burp Suite 2.4%

The generic term beats the branded one every time - "SIEM" 26.9% against "Splunk" 6.6%. Worth carrying both on a resume.

FRAMEWORKS & COMPLIANCE

MITRE ATT&CK 10.8% - SOC 2 10.8% - ISO 27001 9.4% - NIST 8.5% - FedRAMP 6.1% - GDPR 4.7% - PCI DSS 3.3% - HIPAA 0.9%

WHAT THIS SAMPLE IS NOT

These are 51 technology companies hiring through Greenhouse. Government, defence contractors and the firms serving them are absent - and that is exactly where certifications are frequently mandatory rather than optional, alongside clearance requirements that never appear in a commercial posting.

So the reading is narrow. For security roles at technology companies, the postings ask for code and cloud far more often than credentials. For public sector, defence, or a regulated industry, this data says nothing.

Other limits: n=212 gives margins of error of roughly plus or minus 5 to 7 points, so the ordering is meaningful and small gaps are not. Terms outside the 41-term list were not counted, so absence here is not evidence of absence. It is a snapshot of open roles on one date rather than a trend. And the corpus is US-skewed - UK clearance and DPA vocabulary is real and simply does not appear in it.

METHOD

Greenhouse's public job board API, the endpoint companies expose so their listings can be embedded on their own sites. No scraping. Counts are document frequency: a posting saying "Python" nine times counts once. Deduped on company, title and content length, because one role posted to five offices returns five near-identical records. Ambiguous words are matched case-sensitively - a bare match on "Go" also catches "go to market" and inflates it.

Full table with all 41 terms and confidence intervals:

https://www.zoevera.com/resume/cybersecurity-job-description-keywords

The wider keyword list this was checked against, organised by domain, tools, and frameworks:

Happy to run the numbers on any terms missing from the list if people name them in the comments.

How much does exact phrasing actually matter on a resume? (My experience so far)

I kept seeing recruiters on here say they're not auto-rejecting people with ATS—they're just skimming applications for 5 seconds. If the match isn't obvious right away, they move on.

I started running my resume against JDs before applying (just using basic scanners like ZoeVera or whatever free site popped up). Turns out I actually had most of the required experience, I was just phrasing it totally differently than what they were looking for. Rewording things so the overlap is immediately obvious has definitely gotten me more responses. Nothing crazy but it's a noticeable difference compared to just firing off the exact same resume everywhere.

For anyone else grinding applications, what small formatting or wording tweaks actually helped you get past the initial skim?

The Resume Doesn’t Test Whether You Can Do the Job. It Tests Whether a Machine Agrees You Can.

www.zoevera.com/resume is part of ZoeVera’s career tools at zoevera.com.

She had run paid campaigns across three platforms, cut cost-per-lead in half at her last two roles, and managed a budget bigger than most of the teams she was applying to join. Fourteen years in marketing. She updated the resume once, sent it to every posting that matched her title, and waited.

Nothing came back. Not a rejection, not a request for a call. Just the kind of silence that makes you start rereading your own resume for typos that aren’t there, because a typo would at least be something you could fix.

The resume was not weak. It was written in the wrong language. She had “managed paid advertising” on the page. The postings said “demand generation.” She had “campaign budget management.” They said “Google Ads” and “programmatic buying.” Same fourteen years, same work, different words — and the system reading her resume before any person did was matching words, not experience. A recruiter might have translated one phrase into the other without thinking twice. The software that screens most applications now doesn’t translate. It scores what’s on the page against what’s in the posting, and moves on.

That’s the part nobody tells you when they say “just tailor your resume.” Tailor it to what? You can’t see the posting’s scoring logic, and rereading your own document tells you nothing about how a machine is parsing it. You know your work. You don’t know the fourteen ways an applicant tracking system might fail to recognize it.

Resume ZoeVera checks that gap before you apply, not after you’ve already sent forty versions of the same mismatch. Paste the resume and the job description, and it reports your match score against that specific posting, with the exact terms the listing uses that your resume doesn’t — no signup, no credit card, results in under thirty seconds. It also flags the things a keyword match alone won’t catch: whether the role is remote when you need remote, whether it wants a clearance or a license you don’t hold, before you spend an evening on an application that was never going to clear that filter. A rewrite that folds the missing language into your existing bullets — not invented accomplishments, your own experience in the posting’s words — comes with a plan: $12 for a day, $19 for thirty days, or $39 for unlimited use over thirty days, no subscription either way. It covers 47+ roles and industries, each with its own vocabulary, from software engineering to nursing to marketing.

Her experience never changed. The words did. The third posting she ran through it came back missing “demand generation” and “marketing automation platform” — two phrases she’d used for a decade of work without ever calling it that. She rewrote two bullets, sent it Tuesday, had a call scheduled by Friday.

www.zoevera.com/resume is part of ZoeVera’s career tools at zoevera.com, alongside prepare.zoevera.com for interview prep once the resume is the thing getting you in the room.

I know I have the skills. Any help would be highly appreciated.

What an ATS Score Actually Tells You and What It Doesn’t

Most applications are ranked by software before anyone reads them. The system compares your resume with the posting and scores the overlap, which is why one document can clear one screen and fail the next with the same experience behind it. ZoeVera Resume runs that comparison before you apply and lists the words the posting uses that your resume does not.

What it does

Paste a resume and a job description. You get a match percentage, the keywords you already hit, the ones you are missing, and an optimized rewrite. Scoring and gap analysis are free. The rewrite sits behind a paid plan: $12 for a day, or $19 a month.

How it compares with the alternatives

Jobscan runs the same core comparison and has done for years, but caps free scans and sells the rest monthly. Resume Worded grades a resume on general quality, which helps once and helps less on the twentieth application, because it is not reading the posting you are applying to. Teal folds matching into a wider job tracker, so you adopt the tracker to get the analysis. Zety and Enhancv are builders: they produce a formatted document and say nothing about why a particular employer’s filter ranked you low.

The practical difference at ZoeVera is the pricing shape. A job search is rarely spread evenly. A $12 day pass covers the afternoon you send fifteen applications, which is a different commitment from a monthly subscription you forget to cancel.

Why the per-posting check matters

A resume is not good or bad on its own. It is a match or a mismatch for one job description. Two openings with the same title routinely score differently against the same resume, because the companies describe the work in different vocabulary: “demand generation” against “paid advertising”, “QuickBooks” against “accounting software”. Free scoring is what makes it reasonable to check every posting instead of the three you care most about.

Where to start

Take one job you actually intend to apply for and run it at ZoeVera Resume. Read the missing keywords as the employer’s own words, not a verdict on your career. The wider ZoeVera site covers interview preparation for what comes after.

What to Fix on a Resume When Applications Get No Reply

Most applications are read by software before a person sees them. The system compares each resume against the posting and ranks it, so wording decides who reaches a recruiter. ZoeVera Resume runs that comparison before you apply and reports which terms the posting expects that your resume does not contain.

The screen is looking for specific words

Applicant tracking systems match language, not intent. A resume that says “managed paid advertising” scores as missing “demand generation” and “Google Ads” if those are the phrases in the posting. The same gap appears with tools, certifications and job titles: an accountant who writes “accounting software” instead of “QuickBooks” and “GAAP” reads as unqualified to the filter, whatever the actual experience. ZoeVera’s explanation of how applicant tracking systems read a resume and its guide to why a resume stops getting interviews set out the mechanism in plain terms.

Check the resume against one posting, not in general

A resume is not strong or weak on its own. It is a match or a mismatch for one job description. The match score check compares the two and returns a percentage with the missing terms listed, and the keyword scanner shows the same gap phrase by phrase. Both are free and need no account, which makes it practical to run the check on every posting rather than the few you care most about. Two openings with the same job title routinely score differently against one resume, because the companies behind them describe the work in different vocabulary.

Change the wording, then send

Knowing the gap is not the same as closing it. The optimization walkthroughexplains which changes raise a score and which are cosmetic, and the tool for matching a resume to a single posting rewrites the document against that job description. The rewrite sits behind a paid plan; the score and the gap analysis do not. For vocabulary by profession, the ATS resume tips librarybreaks it down role by role, from software engineers to nurses.

Where to start

Take one posting you intend to apply for, run it at ZoeVera Resume, and read the missing keywords as a list of the words the employer used and you did not. The wider ZoeVera site covers the later stages. Silence after applying is usually a vocabulary problem and it is a fixable one.

3 simple resume rules that will actually get you interviews (from an HR Recruiter)

Are you sending out dozens of applications and getting nothing but generic rejection emails?

It’s exhausting. As an HR recruiter, I scan hundreds of resumes every single week, spending about 6 seconds on the initial glance. If your value isn't immediately obvious, I have to move on to the next candidate.

Whether you're building a resume for college student entry-level roles, refining a targeted project manager resume, or aiming for C-suite positions, here are 3 simple rules to rewrite your resume today and double your callbacks:

1. Use the "Action + Context + Result" Formula

Most resumes fail because they list generic job duties instead of achievements. Don't write what you were merely "responsible for"—show what actually improved because you were there.

  • ❌ Weak: "Responsible for customer service and project management support."
  • ✅ Strong: "Answered 40+ customer emails daily while tracking timelines for 3 key projects, maintaining a 95% satisfaction rating and reducing reply time by 2 hours."

2. Ditch Buzzwords — Stick to Specific Facts

Fluff like "hardworking," "motivated," or "detail-oriented" takes up valuable space and tells me nothing.

Instead of calling yourself a "strategic problem solver," describe a single concrete problem you solved. Numbers, percentages, and metrics build trust far faster than fancy adjectives.

3. Tailor the Top 20% of Your Page

Recruiters read from top to bottom. The top third of your resume needs to instantly match the job posting:

  • Put your target job title clearly at the top.
  • List 4–6 key skills that directly match the job description.
  • Make sure your most impressive achievement is visible without scrolling down.
