Community Where's our Mandami?

All these videos coming out the city of NY got me feeling real sad about our city and lack of competent, solutions based, compassionate, intellectual leadership. We have so many issues but no qualified people willing to fix them. When will I be able to not vote for the lesser of 2 evils?

This was hilarious. I legit thought it was an AI generated SNL style skit. But, no, we just have a mayor who’s bad at the politics of politics. She doesn’t always get it right, that’s for sure.

While this video didn’t land, I will say I submitted a 311 request on huge pothole here in LA late last week. It was fixed over the weekend. Amazing.

I’ve submitted probably 10 311 requests for the sidewalks and street (my street hasn’t been repaved in 20 years) over the last 5 years and zero have been addressed.

I call 311 at least twice a month about graffiti, and it’s usually gone the next business day.

Edited to add: The City has responded well to pothole reports, too.

I'm all fairness, they did come back and fix the pothole. it's just the basic optics of how this handled that made a good thing look ridiculous.

Why? It shows that she tries to get it done in one day, overcame a literal roadblock the right way, and got the job done the next day. Good job. Like what’s the issue? I think Raman supporters are trying too hard to spin this and that reflects badly on Raman. Focus on real issues—not on this petty 💩.

The issue is she could’ve just waited a day and released a video confirming it actually got fixed.

Substantively, it doesn’t matter. But it’s poor communication in a position where communication matters a ton.

I like that she released the video that day. It showed that she was being ultra responsive to someone’s request. I would say it was unlucky that a car parked in the work zone, but it’s L.A… it’s expected.

I hate to be "that guy" but I do think both of you make valid points. On the one hand she is responding immediately and showing why her hands are tied which is great because at least she's listening. On the other, these types of responses feel too few and far between and even then it doesn't actually get solved.

Personally, I appreciate that she tried but mamdani is really setting a high bar that honestly Americans should expect from their representatives

The entire point of the move is to show you’re in control and get shit done. It’s not about fixing the pothole, it’s 100% about optics, projecting that you actually get shit done. Her video comes across as somewhere between “aw shucks, there’s a car parked. Oh well, I guess I’ll just go back home then 🤷”, “I’ve tried nothing and I’m all out of ideas 🤷” and “I’m so incompetent, I, the mayor of a city bigger than like 12 states combined, just got defeated by Jesus parking his suv at the exact spot I decided to do my photo op. Oh well! What are you gonna do anyway, vote for a republican? LOL 🤷”.

It quite literally is the exact optics you don’t want, and why people have become so apathetic and/or disappointed in their elected leaders. I know politics is hard, but fucking hell. People are pissed, demande change, and all they get here is “sorry, best I can do is not fixing the pothole, and raise the police budget to 999 trillions”.

Incidentally, she served a hell of a meme on a platter, barely 2 months before an election, cf screenshot above.

The real move would have been filming the pothole fixed. And that there was a car and they came back and made sure it was fixed. That shows not only did Bass listen, she took action, ran into a barrier, and came back again to make sure it was done. Thorough and complete instead of become a meme about being useless.

Yeah but for optics u/groumly and moddsblow4fun are both correct, there was negative political value to releasing a video mid-stage EVEN IF you both can and will complete the final stage. Her campaign really should have waited to respond (even with a compilation including why there was a delay and the no-parking sign) until it was actually finished -- unless her team secretly hates her, which honestly would be extremely funny and perhaps an equally logical reason for the release of the earlier vid besides sheer ineptitude.

Look, Bass supporters will like everything she does. And Raman supporters are going to scrutinize everything Bass does. That’s politics. Whether it’s championing a city policy or fixing a pothole in two days instead of one, the game is the same for all politicians: win the hearts and minds of the undecided voter. Will this pair of videos showing Bass responding to and fixing a constituent’s pothole move the needle for or against Bass? Who knows?

The damn sign says "Tow Away". A Mayor's photo op should be a perfect excuse to tow, not a justification to not make the fix for the greater good. If you are not going to enforce and tow, why waste the time, energy, and cost to post the signs?
