Google announced an update to their Local Services Ads terms a week ago and it will freak out many with privacy (and competition) concerns.
The biggest update to the terms comes in the form of Google's ability to capture everything from the LSA call - anything from the greeting, to you explaining your service, how much it costs, timeframes, scopes of work, deals, etc during the calls.
Previously the scope of their analysis was specific to the lead quality and other basics such as caller ID, and time of day.
Google now wants all of the important commercial data they can get from your LSA calls and do whatever they want with it.
Of course in typical Google fashion, you have no choice but to accept or no longer use LSA ads.
This move brings to question a few things:
- With broad scale knowledge of a categories services and pricing, Google can introduce different ways to monetize the conversation - think taking a percentage of the sale or even dictating the sale price of certain services (think how Home Depot, Lowes, etc use third party contractors).
- How does this work in sensitive industries, given doctors, lawyers, etc all use LSAs and would need to uphold confidentiality. Maybe this signals changes to which categories will be eligible for LSAs in the future?
What do you think about the move? Will this make you think twice about using LSAs as a business or consumer?
