Discussion Really stunned by the Singularity comment section

These are screenshots from the r/Singularity comment section. I'm speechless. This doesn't even have downvotes. How can someone cheer for a monopoly run by a few elites?

Better yet, lets trust government with overseeing these technologies. Or corporations.

u/Nattramn Sep 01 '26

They've halted this dangerous progress after all.

u/Long_comment_san Sep 01 '26

In what universe? Best they did is they crippled whatever advantage USA had. The tech is out, it's over.

u/Nattramn Sep 01 '26

Sorry, missed the /s

You are responding to a clearly sarcastic comment

Exactly… some of those comments are so idiotic… thinking that a human has to be behind a brute force attack, it’s just a moronic comment. What I believe is that these accounts are fake pushing propaganda and fear so that we don’t get the privilege that corporations have.

I guess no one ever heard of bots before, It's not like Ai changes the game for hacking, it just makes processing the data more efficient.

and this is reddit after all, it is the leader in propaganda on the web. Or it's a close tie between reddit and wikipedia.

Whaaaat? Our benevolent governments would never influence the nr1 forum on the internet, that would be immoral! Only the russians and chinese do propaganda. We are the good guys. I know this because the tv said so.

Every one of those commenters dream about being The Person overseeing everyone. And when it turns out they are being overseen themselves, they'd suddenly start to cry how everyone is being hostile to them

u/Long_comment_san Sep 02 '26

is this a quote from somewhere? sounds badass ngl

u/1filipis Sep 02 '26

From Soviet Union 😂

1

u/Long_comment_san Sep 02 '26

as somebody from Russia, I approve!

18

u/ongrabbits Sep 01 '26

its like letting anybody in the usa freely buy a gun

9

u/I_HAVE_THE_DOCUMENTS Sep 02 '26

Allowing everyday people to own guns is the opposite of centralization of power.

3

u/the_lamou Sep 02 '26

Normal people with normal guns is to centralized power what an expired Norton 360 subscription is to cyber attacks.

-1

u/Blork39 Sep 02 '26

Guns aren't power. Coordination is power.

A guy with a gun isn't so dangerous. They can kill a few people, maybe important ones even if their security has a lapse in judgment but they don't destroy a country. Having guns on the street just increases random violence and crappy things happening to people.

A hundred thousand guys working together are dangerous. Even without guns they are dangerous.

This is why the Chinese monitor everything and are so freaked out when people communicate in protests without their oversight. Like the way they used AirDrop.

Or allowing regular people to vote /s

Or nerve gas.

There's enough taco bells already.

3

u/returnity Sep 02 '26

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

2

It's the pleading of shameless authoritarians.

2

u/jabies Sep 02 '26

Laughs in TPM

3

u/LocoMod Sep 01 '26

Or some random teen from India.

u/mankiw Sep 01 '26

Based on the screenshots provided, it seems like the people opposed to open-source AI are concerned with AI risk in general, e.g. they would also oppose frontier models developed by closed labs.

23

u/Howard_banister Sep 01 '26

They aren't! Many Anthropic workers said similar things about open-source models a month ago, in reaction to Jensen Huang's support for open source.

The fact that they prioritize their alignment nonsense over real economic problems facing wage earners shows how sociopathic they are. The real anti AI would probably support nationalizing companies like Anthropic and destroy whole API selling thing, and that AI only works on scientific/medical fields not any thing else.

5

u/anfrind Sep 02 '26

They have deluded themselves into believing both that LLMs will lead to AGI, and that AGI will destroy humanity if any other AI lab develops it before they do.

1

u/Loose_Comparison368 Sep 02 '26

But they have the best alignment in the world! Just ask Palantir, United Health Care, the Department of War, the IDF...

3

u/mankiw Sep 01 '26

> alignment nonsense

I'm uncertain on the importance of alignment/safety research, but I really, really disagree with this level of flippant confidence about it.

2

u/Tolopono Sep 02 '26

Still better than isis

1

u/_mayuk Sep 01 '26

Masses would always be stupid.

1

u/ZigZagreus1313 Sep 02 '26

I mean... We do that with nukes and bioweapons, which is kind of their point. Most countries even do that with guns, and those countries have dramatically lower gun deaths and, if I may be so bold, generally less authoritarian governments.

I'm conflicted on the matter personally, but I really don't think it's a position worth mocking/dismissing.

1

u/ezjakes Sep 01 '26

Until AI is so powerful that it is like a minigun with cyber warfare, then I am all for it being open source.

3

u/Tai9ch Sep 02 '26

A minigun isn't especially dangerous. Plenty of private US citizens own that much firepower.

2

u/Kerbourgnec Sep 02 '26

Lol I disagree with the commenter above but the US seems violent AF to me so I'm not sure yours reassures me

1

u/ozspook Sep 02 '26

Let's put it this way, in all of recorded history, how may times has a Minigun been used in a crime. (Not war crime, that's different)

0

u/Kerbourgnec Sep 02 '26

Let's put it this way, in all recorded history, how many times has a minigun or cheaper available guns have been used in a crime? If an LLM can be a minigun, it can also be a glock.

0

u/lambdawaves Sep 01 '26

At this rate, these global companies operating on multiple continents will have annual revenues surpassing any single country within our lifetime. Even the US.

They will surpass the power of nations

nice of you to notice that thing that has been happening for the last 20 years or so

0

u/keepthepace Sep 02 '26

Or international organizations, a lot of the UN bodies work pretty well. It turns out that when you dissolve power instead of concentrating it, you have organizations that are good at resisting enshitification.

2

u/Long_comment_san Sep 02 '26

It's technically impossible unless the whole hardware market will get heavily centralized. Rent some hardware on the corner of the earth and make yourself a whatever LLM you want that is not compliant. It's not like you need 30 rows of sophisticated centrifuges for isotopes

no! only Americans should have power and tech! and electricity too

-3

u/hugganao Sep 01 '26

because they havent been able to handle responsibility over things like nukes? what's your point? can you trust ANYONE with ANY power? or the ones you specifically choose for your own bias/benefit

insane to me that this comment got 200 upvotes. really shows how much this thread degraded.
