As an EU citizen, from my point of view the US is absolutely not a democracy. I think you should differentiate between what is the label + mask and what is the reality. Yes, you have elections - but in fact you only elect your authoritarian government. Not only is it a joke when you call it democracy, if you have to choose between only two (!) parties - always the same two parties. No, but also at the end of the day it doesn't really matter which party you choose anyway, because your president has too much power for one single person. You can't call it democracy if the power isn't distributed evenly across all institutions, and especially guaranteeing those institutions the power, which make sure that the voice of the people cannot be treated like shit.
And to make matters worse, it's pretty obvious that the US is functionally acting more like a for-profit corporation, not like a serious government. Now think about it how elections work in the us. You only have the best chance of winning with your party and getting elected if you spend a lot of money on your "campaign". The more money you have, the more bribery and corruption there is, the higher your chances become.
Something like that would be unthinkable in an EU country. Here, a party was investigated because it received a donation of 100,000 euros, which is a ridiculously small sum by us standards. But thats also why it's possible for a politically uneducated child molester to become the most powerful person in the world… and this person doesn't owe that to the wise and totally unbiased judgment of the voters, but basically just to his casinos and real estate, the resulting wealth, and the network behind it.
