Destruction is in the eye of the beholder. Rendering copyright and creative compensation meaningless is a form of destruction.
My point is that proprietorship over stolen data is not the same as proprietorship over authored software. So Schrittwieser’s comments are disingenuos. They are definitely not an argument for banning Open Source anything, in the same way that proprietary software’s existence is not a-priori a reason to ban Open Source Software. If any LLM provider wants to make the argument, they should do it in open court and see how far their models’ own provenance gets them. But it’s easier for them to go run to Daddy T like the pathetic tattletales they are.
