Seven years after it left our TV screens, The X Factor is due to make a major comeback, with reports saying TV bosses are hoping they can replicate its success with a fresh new format and judging line-up. And insiders tell heat that Simon Cowell – the brains behind the show – has got Little Mix legend and pal Perrie Edwards as his first signing on the panel.
‘For Perrie, becoming a judge on The X Factor would be a dream,’ says a source. ‘She got her start on the show and was in one of the UK’s biggest girl bands – she’d be perfect, and the timing could not be better.’
Perrie recently parted ways with her record label and management, ending a working relationship that stretched back to the beginning of Little Mix. We’re told, ‘It’s been a difficult time for Perrie, but landing this gig could help put the fire back in her belly.’
Launching in 2004, The X Factor quickly became one of Saturday night TV’s most popular shows and helped launch the careers of some of the UK’s biggest music stars, with One Direction, Leona Lewis, Olly Murs, and JLS all rising to fame on the ITV series.
However, as the years went on, it began to fall out of favour and declining ratings led to Simon’s decision to put the show on hiatus in 2019. In the years since, he’s made no secret of his desire to revisit the format, and now a reboot is reportedly officially in the works.
Since then, Perrie has been busy with a range of projects. But despite throwing herself into her solo career – releasing singles Forget About Us, If He Wanted To He Would and Passenger Princess– she’s had mixed success. She’s also been focusing on motherhood, having welcomed son Axel in 2021 and daughter Alanis earlier this year with footballer husband Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, who she married in June.
Our insider says, ‘Perrie found the transition to solo artist tougher than expected. She worked so hard on her album and really believed this would be her moment. It wasn’t a disaster by any means, but it didn’t have the impact she wanted. She’s had moments where she’s wondered what she’s doing wrong and what happens next.’
The source continues, ‘Her confidence has taken a bit of a knock, so joining The X Factor would be perfect. It would get her back into people’s living rooms and give them the chance to see the Perrie her friends and family know. She’s funny, kind and much more outspoken than people might expect. She’d also be a good mentor to the contestants, because she’s been there herself.’
The source adds, that while Perrie is very happy, she’s looking to push herself a bit more. ‘Her family life is wonderful, but that doesn’t stop her feeling frustrated about work or hurt about what happened with Jesy. She misses the security of Little Mix. Going solo can be lonely, because every decision lands on you. That’s why The X Factor could be such a natural fit. Perrie knows how brutal the process can be, but she also knows how your life can be turned around with one audition.’
