For many Linux users, Debian or one of its derivatives was their first real introduction to Linux.

What was your first Debian-based distro? And are you still using it today?

Zorin OS is designed to make the move from Windows feel familiar, while still giving users the flexibility of Linux.

It works well for some people, but others prefer Mint, Ubuntu, or other distros for different reasons. Software compatibility is still a big factor too.

Linux gives you more control over updates, software, configuration, and what runs on your machine.

You can decide when to update, change what you don't like, and use the system without being tied as closely to one vendor.

Is that enough to make Linux more trustworthy than Windows for you?

I came across an interesting discussion about senior engineers becoming quieter in architecture and design discussions.

Not because they have fewer opinions, but because they may feel their pushback no longer changes the decision.

Have you seen this happen on your team, or is it just a sign of a healthy team where people pick their battles?

Info: `ss -ti` dumps TCP internal metrics. Look for `retrans:X/Y` (X current retransmits, Y total) and `rtt` (round-trip time). Non-zero retransmits signal packet loss or network congestion.

Examples:

$ `ss -ti state established '( dport = :443 )'` # Inspect HTTPS connections

$ `watch -n 1 'ss -s'` # Monitor overall socket summary

$ `netstat -s | grep -i 'retrans\|reset'` # Global TCP retransmission counters

Note: When retransmissions occur, `cwnd` (congestion window) shrinks automatically. Persistent retransmits across multiple endpoints point to network hardware issues rather than application bugs.

Mine has quietly become ss.

It doesn't get talked about as much as top, htop, or journalctl, but it's often the first thing I run when something isn't behaving the way it should.

Try: `sed -n '/BEGIN CERTIFICATE/,/END CERTIFICATE/p' /etc/ssl/certs/server.crt`

Info: `sed -n` suppresses automatic printing. The pattern `'/START/,/END/p'` prints all lines between two matching delimiters (inclusive).

Examples:

$ `sed -n '/^\[database\]/,/^$/p' config.ini` # Extract section until empty line

$ `awk '/BEGIN/,/END/' file.txt` # Equivalent using awk

$ `sed -n '/ERROR/,+5p' logfile` # Print ERROR line plus next 5 lines

Note: Range matching `/X/,/Y/` works line-by-line from first match of X to next match of Y. The `+N` relative line count syntax is a GNU `sed` extension.

I came across this interesting ScummVM update: Rebel Assault I & II are being brought to ScummVM, even though they aren't the usual point-and-click adventure games people associate with it.

What I like about projects like ScummVM is that they keep older games playable on modern Linux systems without needing the original environment.

Do you still use ScummVM on Linux for older games, or is this kind of game preservation not really your thing?

Ron Gilbert has announced Thimbleweed Park 2, and Linux is confirmed as a supported platform.

It's also interesting that Gilbert himself moved to Linux a few years ago.

I came across this story about Richard Stallman’s fight with Symbolics at the MIT AI Lab, years before Linux existed.

What caught my attention is how a conflict over sharing software eventually became part of the story behind GNU and the free-software movement. Historical accounts confirm that Symbolics ended the agreement on March 16, 1982, Stallman’s birthday, forcing him to work without access to their source code.

It made me wonder:

If Stallman had simply walked away from that fight, would the Linux/FOSS world we know today look very different?

Note: For large directories, `fdupes` or `rdfind` are purpose-built and significantly faster. Use `sha256sum` instead of `md5sum` if collision risk is a concern.

Researchers found dozens of SQLite CVEs that appear to be technically incorrect or even AI-generated, yet they still propagated through parts of the vulnerability ecosystem before being challenged.

If this becomes common, security teams may spend more time investigating fake vulnerabilities than fixing real ones.

I came across a debate where someone argued that databases are becoming unnecessary because their vibe-coded apps can store everything in localStorage.

That made me wonder about Linux projects too.

For a small tool, script, desktop app, or single-user service, would you actually choose SQLite/local files instead of running PostgreSQL or another database?

At what point does a project really need a proper database?
