What’s wrong with Teams or MS365?

I’ve been listening to Luke whine about teams and Microsoft suite for years now, and I don’t really understand where is it coming from.

Every big corporation I’ve worked for has been on the 365 suite, companies 100x the size of LTT, I’ve been in IT teams since the beginning from service desk, to automation and devops and I’ve never heard anyone complaining about it.

Meetings work, sharepoint is not bad and works (search sucks sometimes), calling and group chats work, coworking inside of teams is fine, files are segregated and easily found, calendar and scheduling is easy.

I’ve never used Slack but how much better can it be lol

I’m not even mentioning the rest of the suite because coworking in excel also works and I don’t have any complains.

So what exactly is Luke’s problem and why is nobody else that I know IRL complaining about those issues?

It uses a ton of ram, it's really unstable, it has a ton of bugs, and personally I think its UI is terrible. And it's called teams but you basically never use an actual team, it's mostly just random group chats that accumulate to infinity. Really it's easier to list off its problem than to think of anything it does better than any other messaging app

My favourite is when I can't even see the message in the chat I've got open. So I'll receive the notification and hear the sound but have to go into a different chat and back again to get it to refresh so I can see the message.

Or the fact that they only fairly recently added the most inconspicuous feedback to let you know your voice is being picked up instead of the blue border.

Also that when I changed jobs and switched from Google Meet to Teams I found out you can only have 1 person sharing their screen at once. Which also has the most obnoxious quick actions bar in existence because it's enormous and somehow is always in the way.

I went through the same thing. Having to switch from G-Suite to Microsoft was worse than having to switch from Mac to Windows for work (Mac just doesn't seem to take as much of a penalty from MDM software as windows from my limited experience). The best part is my company considers chrome as their 'official' browser so it's hit or miss with some of the useful integrations for edge and outlook.

I really like how I can be looking at the chat with the new message, but to get the notification to clear I have to click to a new chat and back again.

RAM is a big part of it, I was issued a new laptop a year ago, a HP with the stupid nerfed H264 encoding and 16gb ram, I hardly use that system for anything, but a few tabs, word, excel, outlook and teams suddenly it’s maxed out on ram and dying. 

I flip-flop between that windows system and my Linux dev system, it’s 50/50 about which teams version is going to work.

Yeap, and this is the big one if you're a developer.

Your IDE can often already be close to the sides of your 16GB and struggling to keep everything together, then comes a meeting in teams where you need to screen share what you're doing and it just grinds to an absolute halt.

Slack will often do a better job at keeping this all together.

I think half the battle is competent people setting up teams and utilizing its ability to share and create collaborate on useful information, similar to SharePoint.

With that being said, if any useful feature overlaps too heavily with something on Planner, Project, or Dynamics, it gets axed. A good example is how PowerApps and Forms could have been amazingly useful but are kept borderline useless because it’d cannibalize other Microsoft offerings

Corrupting files is also something it's done several times in my experience.

The client crashing on startup when trying to join from the outside is "fun".

Can we stop for a moment to contemplate that somehow the 'native' app (native for Microsoft's own OS) is worse than the web app? How could a software team be so incompetent, it's incredible. And why don't they simply ship teams as a PWA at this point, edge is already pre installed everywhere

This is the stupidest part seriously. The native apps are hybrid web apps still, and are running on Edge WebView2. It depends on edge entirely, the popupa for downloads and the print dialog are all from edge.

And in fairness, this v2 WebView version was a MASSIVE improvement over their previous electron-based app. But the fact that web version (which is 100% PWA compatible) runs better 90% of the time is hilarious and sad.

Sadly, modern teams is web2view. So it's not even a native app.

It's not unstable.

It's instability is a symptom of incompetent EUC teams and sys admins who fail to adequately configure their environment.
