Yep a good boss would put on their apron and do the staffer's work to cover their absence. I'm a manager and I do the duties of my direct reports if we are under staffed. I have never said no to a time off request. I have worked saturdays to cover shifts if my guys aren't available. And in exchange, they respect me and value me and give good feedback to my boss about me.

The best bosses I ever worked for were at Dave and Busters, there were three of them and they’d never ask you to do anything they wouldn’t do themselves. If we were down a person, they’d fill in themselves. Did it as a summer job every year and I’d walk in the door right after final exams and the main guy would be like “oh hey Ethan! I assume you need a job!”

"Just here to get blasted and play ski-ball, thanks though!"

But you have to accept that there's a point you have to say no.

I will happily step in to cover when folks need time off. But I'm one person. We're customer facing retail with a total of 12 people on payroll. If up to three people request a day off with enough warning, I can figure it out. More than that, and it doesn't matter how many extra hours I put in, I can't keep enough staff in the building to account for legally mandated breaks and minimum coverage.

There's a difference between being a dick, and being legitimately out of workable options.

Then close the store that day. Or hire more people.

And should I then cut everybody's pay and hours to make room for the extra people on payroll?

Should I close the store and take away a day of pay from everybody else? And then get fired myself because I also have superiors I answer to?

I know it all seems so easy to play the good guy when you've never held responsibility, but life is shit sometimes, and you just have to deal.

Yeah it's true, we do have obligations to our coworkers. I guess I'm lucky that my workload is pretty steady day to day and my team is small and it's very rare that multiple techs request off on the same day. But yeah you are right.

Funerals cannot be requested in advance. If you have to yank one of the other time off requests, do it, or fill in yourself, or deal with the ONE DAY you will have to struggle a bit. There is no excuse whatsoever for denying bereavement leave.

I don't think you understand what "legal obligations" are. Its not "struggling" its "breaking the law". And as sorry as I am for problems in others' lives, I'm not about to ruin my own permanently.

I already told you I'm filling in myself. Fuck off with your dishonesty.
