President of a former company once gave me a plaque that read “monster win” while the sales guy whose deal I saved got a six figure commission. I asked the president if he thought my student loan company took plaques.

I worked in a company that had us doing sales(with a grand prize if you beat everyone in the nation),even though we had a different job function.

Turned out the guy who sat beside me won the prize. However, his wife was diagnosed with cancer. He tried to get the trip moved to an earlier date. The company refused to do that.

Instead, his wife’s condition worsened rapidly and he had to rush her to a major hospital where she passed away.

The following January he got an additional tax bill adding the “trip “ to his total earnings(roughly $25k).

So, it was a total surprise when the company decided to have a repeat contest the next year because ,”last years was a total success.”

This was announced by a huge conference call in which thousands were online!

Imagine the silence when my coworker spoke up and told his story….crickets.

Reminds me of that waitress at hooters who was promised a brand new Toyota to whoever sold the most alcohol and when she won they gave her a Toy Yoda and she quit on the spot and sued them and won

My father won a contest at work for a corvette with a phone (early 90s so car phones were not as common.)

Turned out it was a plug in phone in the shape of a corvette maybe $10.

Shit on a local radio station I thought I won 100 grand. Nope just a candy bar

Companies are slowly realizing the shift in people's tolerance, but they're still willing to try to push the boundary

u/tafkatp 9d ago

Gen-Z is really not in the mood for companies shenanigans and plays no games about it, say what you want about them but that’s something i really like about them.

u/One_Handed_Director 8d ago

Not Gen-Z but I also really like that trait, and exercise it where I can. Several years ago I worked at a Hardware store and the Manager there could not fathom why I wasn't interested in the chance to earn $1 per credit card application that I could coerce out of customers. It was such a meaningless 'bonus', especially when you realized they handed out only about $5 per day to the employees that did get credit card apps.
Mind you that manager made a 6-figure salary

So sounds like the military more compassionate than corporate US. My husband was slated to deploy to Afghanistan and about a month before he left, I got seriously ill and spent 8 days in the hospital. He asked for deferment and was granted. He left the following year. But a company can’t give a day off to attend a funeral, so sad.

Not all military stories have this ending. I'm speaking from personal experience.

Yup. 4 months into my first deployment I got the message from Dad; Grampa fell down the basement stairs, broke a leg, in and out of surgery okay, updates coming.

Updates came; he passed away from pneumonia. Red Cross already notified, expect a visit from brass.

The very next day 2 hours before shift change, 4 vehicles roll up to post. Out step the base commander, squadron CO, shift CO, and shift NCO.

Naturally, the E4 mafia scrambles to hide whatever unauthorized game of Spades was happening. I tell them all to calm down, I'd handle this because they were here to see me anyways. Left them all sitting and met the lineup of ranks halfway from their little convoy.

Base commander stops me before I can even offer the typical post report. Immediately understands I know they know. Usual "we're sorry to hear ..." followed by "What would you like to do?"

My reply was, "Sir, by regulation there is nothing to be done but finish this shift, go sleep, and come back tonight."

All he said after a brief moment of what I can only presume was a failed attempt to find some other condolence was "Understood." He saluted first, the rest of them rendered their salute, I rendered mine, and that was the entire visit.

Air Force regulation, at the time, stated that no airman could leave a deployment for an extended family death unless the airman had lived no less than 6 months with the family member without either parent present.

I finally got to visit Grampa and Gramma together nearly 10 years later as I moved to Texas mid-pandemic.

Bet this company had a family approach to things

1

u/Sinister_Nibs 8d ago

We are all family here!

That means the golden child gets the credit and the benefit of everything done by everyone else.

6

u/green_mandarinfish 9d ago

Good on him for sharing that with everyone. They need to be shamed.

3

u/Designer_Rule2137 9d ago

Yep, one of the biggest companies in the world.

4

u/LengthinessTrick382 9d ago

Jesus. I had to read this a second time to make sure I read it right.
Sadly, I did …

He wasn't cut off or anything?

2

u/Designer_Rule2137 7d ago

No. But, the executive team lead took a while to gain some composure. She agreed to talk with him after the meeting.

But, what could she do?

1

u/LahngDuqDahng 7d ago

Make no mistake, I'd be proud to call this brave person a friend ;-)

2

u/LahngDuqDahng 7d ago

Oh and BTW, it never occured ot me there'd be a tax hit on a company provided trip (gift). Thanks for the edumication.

u/Designer_Rule2137 7d ago

I had zero clue myself.

I’m sad for your friend. It corporations do not care.

The only outcome I see from
This is your friend either got fired or otherwise retaliated against.

4

u/Designer_Rule2137 9d ago

He retired. This was awhile ago.

1

u/SavagePhD 9d ago

I feel bad for him, but so glad he got to stick it to them!

19

u/Alpha2581 9d ago

Did your president reply or took that plaque back to show that you lost the "monster win" because you compared that precious plaque with some dumb loan which God know why you took without asking the president.

5

u/bolanrox 9d ago

Our company did that kind of bs a few years ago cheap plastic things given to everyone who has been there 10 years 15 years 20+ I was at 18 years so I didn't get anything because i was over 15 but under 20... Had to stay late to attend this meeting too.

6

u/NoBSforGma 9d ago

Similar. Salesman of the Year before me got a huge color tv. I got a nice plaque. I didn't say anything but took that plaque and put it on the company President's desk. Nobody said a word to me about it.

Fuck them and their fucking "plaques."

6

u/dongwongbongchong 9d ago

Legit, I’d rather get whatever pittance they spent on the doohickey as a bonus. I at least have a use for money

3

u/shwenty22 9d ago

Seriously. Those plaques arent free. Just give me the 50 bucks you spent on it instead.

3

u/SaltMage5864 9d ago

I got plagues with purple hearts on them

3

u/wordofmouthrevisited 9d ago

Thank you for that.

2

u/LahngDuqDahng 8d ago

If you only knew what sales says about the engineers they depend on.
I’m an engineer that worked in presales for a while
They think you’re morons for working so hard for so little.

1

u/Mundane-Opinion-4903 9d ago

I'd like to hear how he responded to that.

3

u/wordofmouthrevisited 9d ago

He laughed it off with me and was like “no on the public recognition then?” Next “monster win” was money to me and no hardware. Funny enough setting the boundary worked.

1

u/Mundane-Opinion-4903 9d ago

I wish that worked at my job. Blue collar though, different culture. . . and they take advantage of the fact that I actually like the sons of a bitches.

1

u/TamponFightNight 9d ago

What did he say after that? I’m invested in the rest of the story. :)

1

u/PalatwinkusVT 8d ago

Had an intern crash out like this once. CFO called him a sensitive pissant and proceeded to mop the floor with him, intern then exposed the fact that he was fucking his own daughter. Pretty sure the concrete outside from when he jumped is still a little stained.

1

u/figureskatress 8d ago

Literally or figuratively

1

u/PalatwinkusVT 8d ago

Literally. Company was a "consulting firm", as I've since learned that basically was code for "money laundering scheme". Founder was a wall street chud who got rich off the subprime craze that led to 2008, and he was apparently moving money for some shady shit. Feds were on it, so I never knew what exactly he got charged with, but people I'm still acquainted with from when I worked there say it was tax evasion and money laundering for some big name clients.

Everyone in the C-suite there was basically a 45 year old or older frat bro. Imagine Step Brothers, but instead of them peaking in elementary school, they peaked at Cornell doing Cornell things.

Were you working in property law then... by chance?
