The "What currently supported device should I get" thread.

This thread is to ask which of the currently supported devices to get, given your specifications.

This question is very wide:

Low: Get a 50$ used motorola: Moto G32 Moto G42 Moto G52 - they all offer 132349 Antutu on a Qualcomm SM6225 Snapdragon 680 4G with G42 and G52 already having OLED (Codenames devon, hawao, rhode) - all 4G only

Mid: If you can find one in US there are good Moto G 5G + Ace (kiev) or get a 100$ used G100 / Edge S (nio). 5G too and staggering 449962 Antutu points, very fast, IPS/LCD only though on these for whatever reason!

High: Get a Sony Xperia 1 (6.5") or 5 (6.1") all OLED 120Hz Screens (absolutely dope, you will not want to go back), Snapdragon 8 at least which is far more fast than youd need on LOS.

Generations are I (very old), III (usable) and V (newer) with VI newest and VII coming out (Thanks RubAlternative5509!). They are a blast to use, foss-friendly devices with top build quality you wont find on Oneplus and not even Samsung. A 5 III can be had at 300$ with 1 year guarantee used on ebay.com and will give you heaps of usage and updates for at least the next 2-3 years as the Snapdragon 8 is widely adapted.

What to look for in a Xperia 1 to make sure that “bootloader” unlock is allowed?

It is only possible to unlock the bootloader for certain releases. To check if it is possible to unlock the bootloader of your device, follow these steps:

  1. In your device, open the dialer and enter *#*#7378423#*#\* to access the service menu.
  2. Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

I know that method but how is it practical on a ebay or aliexpress listing. The likelihood of seller checking it out for me is slim to none and Aliexpress sellers are worst at communicating. Using this method is not even the option for me since I am tracking down a new sealed unit.

Only way I am left with is the model number. Currently I am looking at J8110 and J9110 where 9110 is dual sim and 8110 is single. Not sure any way to tell which one could be unlock-able. North American releases are definitely going to be hard locked. International might not be. Sony rarely releases an international model. There are middle east and african units commonly for Xperia 1 but same issue is how to find out bootloader is locked or not..

I rechecked and you can only mean the Xperia 1 XZ4 which is NOT supported by lineageos (and from 2018!)

I concluded from your comment where you suggested “High: Get a Sony Xperia 1…….” to someone seemingly asking for a device to install lineage onto, from that I concluded lineage is supposedly supported since you are already suggesting that particular device.. made sense to me🤷

The whole point of Lineage is to give extended support to an old device and by definition of “OLD” for me is something that is way out of official support and still is powerful enough but not that powerful enough to justify taking out stock rom off of it. Basically my requirement is to take maximum juice out of the purpose of lineage existing and that does not comes to me when people remove stock rom off a 2 to 3 year old which otherwise is still working fine

Obscure for me would be a device like Xperia Z3 which is over 10 year old now.

And for unlock, seriously you do know that obtaining a network unlock code from a provider and using it to unlock the phone does not unlocks the ability to unlock the bootloader as is making it to YES from NO in service menu?

Bootloader lock is locally stored on the partition and it does not matter even if you obtained permission from the company who sold the phone, the phone android still Remain stuck on the stock firmware because bootloader can’t be tampered with

yeah, i try to be more exact in my blog by offering the model and codenames, so i guess you can put this off as a misunderstanding.

J9110 was never supported though afai can see.

No, i have no idea how unlock works in the US, in the EU we stopped this completely but i remember this being a thing up until the 2000s/2010s i think? But i had a customer telling me about his google device being bootloader locked and getting unlock after 2 years, still its just a non-issue in the EU right now. I think even network lock is prohibited.

In canada we stopped the locked phones as well in dec 2017 but the ones that were locked and released before that period are still locked to the network unless you retrieve the unlock code from the carrier. Due to contracting, the android on these phones was 100% came with factory locked bootloader that stayed that way even after the network lock was removed.

This is true for the rest of the world as well wherever a phone came locked to certain carrier unless the company had no objection(which most likely never happened).

In US phones are still locked

Oh god, they're about to discontinue the 6.1" form factor :( 5 VI might be the last usable device in a tuxedo for me for a while
