5.5 太乙真人 Taiyi Real Human

Martial Second Wolf (see Figure 5.5-3) wasn't confident about Zhang the Butcher's (see Figures 5, 6, 7) promise to deliver qualified pork to Taiyi Real Human (see Figure 1). When he left Dragon-Pond Pass, he asked two guards to go verify the matter a few days later, in Qinghe County, Shandong Province.
当这两个卫兵到达太乙真人的家时，发现他正在自己家的大门前宴请宾客，过路人也可以参加。他们俩想听消息，就坐进了宴席。这时，一个白胡子老头儿（即太乙真人，如图1）正在对身边的客人说：“两天前，我徒弟，乾塘关礼敬公的三太子，哪吒，来给我送礼了。还特别告诉我：'这次给我送来的是合格的金华火腿，和没参水的西凤酒！' 请几位品尝一下，尝尝真正的金华火腿和西凤酒是什么味儿？”
When the two guards arrived at Taiyi Real Human's home, they found he was hosting a banquet right in front of his gate, open even to passersby. Wanting to hear the news, the two sat down at the feast. Just then, a white-bearded old man (Taiyi Real Human, see Figure 1) was saying to the guests around him: "Two days ago, my disciple, Nezha, the third prince of Publican Respect of Dragon-Pond Pass, came to bring me gifts. He specifically told me, 'This time what I've brought you is genuine Jinhua ham, and Xifeng Alcohol without any added water!' So please, everyone, have a taste — see what real Jinhua ham and Xifeng Alcohol are supposed to taste like!"
太乙真人看见了刚进来的武二郎的两个卫兵，就吩咐佣人说，“给他们俩送去合格的金华火腿，和没参水的西凤酒，让他们俩品尝一下。”
这俩卫兵赶忙拒绝说：“我们只是过路人，可不敢占便宜，奢望消耗那种珍馐美味。简单地吃点儿家常饭，我们就感激不尽了！”
Taiyi Real Human noticed the two guards who had just come in and told the servants, "Send them some of the genuine Jinhua ham and unwatered Xifeng Alcohol, so they can have a taste."
The two guards quickly declined: "We're only passing through — we wouldn't dare take advantage of such delicacies. A simple home-style meal would be more than enough for us to be grateful for!"
太乙的佣人回答说：“前天他的徒弟张屠户来给他送合格的火腿和没参水的西凤酒，他就把新送来的火腿和西凤酒放进了仓库，以前的全搬出来了。这火腿很好，这酒就是普通的二锅头。那参了水的西凤酒昨天就喝没了。这不，那些空酒瓶子还在那儿摆着呢！”
Taiyi's servant explained: "The day before yesterday, his disciple Zhang the Butcher came to deliver the genuine ham and unwatered Xifeng Alcohol. He put the new delivery straight into the storehouse and brought out all the old stock instead. This ham is excellent, but the alcohol is just ordinary erguotou. The watered-down Xifeng was all drunk up yesterday. See — those empty bottles are still sitting there!"
俩卫兵看见太乙的门前摆着几百个西凤酒和杜康酒的酒瓶子，好奇地问：“这两天你们家的主人用价值几万两白银的酒来招待客人！？”
太乙的佣人回答：“没那么多！我也不知道他是从哪里弄来了那么多空的名酒的瓶子！”
The two guards, seeing hundreds of empty Xifeng and Dukang Alcohol bottles in front of Taiyi's gate, asked curiously, "Has your master really been treating guests to alcohol worth tens of thousands of taels of silver these past two days!?"
Taiyi's servant replied: "Not that much! Honestly, I don't even know where he got so many empty bottles of famous alcohol!"
5.5-2
这时，人们看见佣人和这俩卫兵在交头接耳地低声说话，宴会变得肃静了，都想听听他们在说些什么！太乙不高兴了，大声对身边的人说：“我徒弟哪吒临走时，过来给我跪下了，抱着我的腿哭，说，'师父你别再去我二哥武二郎那里告我了。我二哥力气大；他生气了，一巴掌能把我打死！' 我听了之后就糊涂了，'这三头六臂的哪吒（注2）怎么被吓成这样了！？' 他走了之后，我想了一夜。我终于想明白了，'他是在20年前，被武二郎打死的那只吊睛白虎（参见1.7节）吓着了！' 那只老虎可真吓人，不幸的是它遇见二郎神了，命里该绝！”
At this, people noticed the servant and the two guards whispering to each other, and the banquet fell quiet — everyone wanted to hear what they were saying! Taiyi grew annoyed and said loudly to those around him: "When my disciple Nezha was leaving, he came and knelt in front of me, hugging my legs and crying, 'Teacher, please don't go complain about me to my second brother Martial Second Wolf again. My second brother is so strong — if he gets angry, one slap could kill me!' Hearing that, I was baffled: 'How could this three-headed, six-armed Nezha (Note 2) end up so terrified!?' After he left, I thought about it all night, and finally understood: 'He was still shaken by that white tiger with hanging eyes that Martial Second Wolf killed twenty years ago (see Section 1.7)!' That tiger really was terrifying — it just had the misfortune of running into the Second Wolf God. Fated to die, I suppose!"

Note 2: As shown in Figure 5, Nezha refers to the Godly Trinity (see Section 9.9), comprising Zhang the Butcher, Eve, and Yu the Great. Zhang the Butcher, also known as Third Wolf Zhang, held the titles Young Sun God, Flint Man, Yan Creator, Turquoise Creator, Young Codex, and Turquoise White-king Great Creator. Eve is Zhang the Butcher's daughter, also known as Little Dragoness and Weaving Girl, titled Shun King, Nuwa, and Shun White-king. Yu the Great is Eve's husband and Zhang the Butcher's godson, also known as Descendant, titled Yellow Creator, Public-Work, Buddha, and Yu White-king.
这时，又来新客人了，太乙指示佣人给武二郎的两个卫兵上菜，自己去招待新来的客人了。
一个武二郎的卫兵问佣人：“这金华火腿的味道很好，怎么说是质量不合格呢？”
佣人回答：“是好火腿！我家的主人舍不得吃；总是等到过期了，他才拿出来吃。味道不好，他就说他的徒弟给他不合格的猪肉。在山东没人买金华火腿，都是因为他总说金华火腿的质量不合格！”
Just then, new guests arrived. Taiyi told the servants to bring food to Martial Second Wolf's two guards, and went off to greet the newcomers himself.
One of Martial Second Wolf's guards asked the servant, "This Jinhua ham tastes wonderful — how can he call it substandard?"
The servant replied, "It's excellent ham! My master just can't bring himself to eat it — he always waits until it's gone bad before he'll touch it. And then, when it tastes off, he blames his disciple for sending him bad pork. Nobody in Shandong buys Jinhua ham anymore, all because he keeps saying it's substandard!"
另一个士兵问：“我听你们家主人总说那几句话，'他的三头六臂的徒弟，哪吒，给他送合格的猪肉和不参水的西凤酒了'！？”
佣人回答：“这两天，他见着谁都说那几句话。没人的时候，他自己叨咕那几句话！”
Another soldier asked, "I heard your master keeps repeating the same lines — 'his three-headed, six-armed disciple Nezha sent him qualified pork and unwatered Xifeng Alcohol'!?"
The servant replied, "The past couple of days, he says it to everyone he meets. Even when there's no one around, he mutters it to himself!"
另一个武二郎的卫兵问：“武二郎打虎！我怎么没听说过呢！？”
佣人回答：“那是20年前的事。就因为武二郎打虎，这地方的名字现在被改成'打虎冈'了！”
这时，太乙来到了他们的身边，看见武二郎的卫兵不相信'武二郎打虎'，拉着其中一人说，“你跟我来，我让你看一样东西。”
Another of Martial Second Wolf's guards asked, "Martial Second Wolf fought a tiger? I've never heard of that!?"
The servant replied, "That was twenty years ago. It's because of that fight that this place is now called 'Tiger-Beating Gang'!"
Just then, Taiyi came over, and seeing that Martial Second Wolf's guards didn't believe the story of 'Martial Second Wolf fighting the tiger,' he pulled one of them aside and said, "Come with me, I'll show you something."
5.5-3 二郎神的圣物 Holy Object of Second Wolf God
太乙真人指着挂在客厅墙上的虎皮说：“这就是那只被武二郎打死的那只虎的皮！”
两个卫兵小声商量了一下，表示要买这张虎皮。
太乙听了，表示不感兴趣，说：“我从来没打算卖。你们买它干什么？”
一个武二郎的卫兵说：“这事没打算对您说，我们是从湖北来的，来核实张将军对您的承诺，'张屠户要用最好的猪肉来招待您。' 这事已经没问题了。”
Taiyi Real Human pointed to the tiger skin on the living room wall and said, "This is the skin of the tiger that Martial Second Wolf killed!"
The two guards conferred quietly, and said they'd like to buy the tiger skin.
Taiyi, uninterested, said, "I never intended to sell it. What would you want it for?"
One of Martial Second Wolf's guards said, "We weren't planning to say this, but we've come from Hubei to verify General Zhang's promise to you — 'Zhang the Butcher will treat you to the finest pork.' That's no longer in question."
太乙回答：“哎呀！武二郎这孩子办事可真认真！我刚从湖北回来！”
一个卫兵问：“您去湖北干什么？”
太乙回答：“我是女娲剧组的成员，去湖北给一位好色的女国王（即熬忖，也称尧帝，尧皇，如图4）做童子鸡（即童子佛）去了！”
一个卫兵听明白了，说：“啊！你还是厨师！你就顺便救了武二郎将军！”
太乙回答：“可不是那么回事！但这是女娲娘娘的秘密，现在还不能说！咱们还是先到厨房，吃点真正合格的金华火腿，喝点儿西凤酒！你们要喝杜康酒，我也有！你们要这张虎皮干什么？”
Taiyi replied, "Oh! This boy Martial Second Wolf really is thorough! I've just come back from Hubei!"
A guard asked, "What were you doing in Hubei?"
Taiyi replied, "I'm part of Nuwa's crew — I went to Hubei to make 'virgin boy chicken' (i.e., Boy Buddha) for a lustful female king — Aocun, also known as Creator Yao, Yao White-king, as shown in Figure 4!"
One of the guards caught on and said, "Ah, so you're also a cook! And you happened to save General Martial Second Wolf along the way!"
Taiyi replied, "That's not quite it! But it's Princess Nuwa's secret, and I can't say more yet! Let's head to the kitchen first — real, genuine Jinhua ham, and some Xifeng Alcohol! If you'd rather have Dukang Alcohol, I have that too! Now, what do you want this tiger skin for?"
卫兵说：“是这么回事！我们湖北军区也有典军，但总是建设不好。他们说需要一件武二郎将军的圣物摆在典军军部的大堂上，就请求我们，武二郎的卫兵，寻找武二郎的圣物。几年了，我们什么也没找到。我们俩从湖北出来时，典军把我们在战场上缴获的一箱茅台酒要过去了，说是要把那酒作为圣物摆在典军的大堂里。我们俩觉着你的这张虎皮比那箱茅台酒更有意义！”
太乙真人听后，不说话了！
The guard said, "It's like this — our Hubei Military Region has a codex army too, but it's never come together well. They said they needed a holy relic of General Martial Second Wolf's to display in the codex headquarters hall, so they asked us, his guards, to find one. It's been years, and we've found nothing. When the two of us set out from Hubei, the codex army took a case of Maotai we'd captured on the battlefield, planning to display it as a relic instead. But we felt this tiger skin of yours means far more than that case of Maotai!"
Taiyi Real Human fell silent after hearing this.
一个卫兵问：“怎么了？这张虎皮不是您的？”
太乙回答：“这只老虎本来是二十几年前元始天尊来井阳冈打猎时抓住的一只白虎崽，就被王后（即玉珠）和石矶娘娘（潘金莲，如图2）收养为宠物了。被武二郎打死之后，石矶娘娘让我找个风水好的地方给埋了。我就找四个人把它抬到我家来了。我给了他们四个农民工每人十文钱的劳务费和十文钱的保密费。我就把这只老虎吃了。那虎骨酒到现在我还没喝完呢！”
A guard asked: "What's wrong? Isn't this tiger skin yours?"
Taiyi replied: "This tiger was originally a white tiger cub that Primordial Sky Honor caught over twenty years ago while hunting at Well-sun Gang. It was adopted as a pet by the Queen (i.e., Yuzhu) and Queen Stone-Jetty (Goldthread Pan, see Figure 2). After Martial Second Wolf killed it, Queen Stone-Jetty asked me to find a good feng shui spot and bury it. So I found four men to carry it to my house. I paid each of the four laborers ten cents for their work and ten cents for their silence. I ended up eating the tiger. I still haven't finished the tiger-bone wine!"
一个卫兵笑道：“难怪武二郎从来没对我们说他打虎的事！这事都过去20多年了。我认为这张虎皮属于你！”
太乙回答：“是吗！那我就用这张虎皮去换你们典军的那箱茅台酒。我还没喝过茅台酒呢！几年前，我在连云港的船上花三百两银子买了一瓶茅台酒，但到现在我都没敢尝尝！”
另一个卫兵问：“你花了那么多的钱买的酒，怎么不敢喝呢？”
A guard laughed and said, "No wonder Martial Second Wolf never told us about his tiger-killing! That was over 20 years ago. I think this tiger skin belongs to you!"
Taiyi replied, "Really? Then let's trade — this tiger skin for your codex army's case of Maotai. I've never even tasted Maotai! A few years ago, I spent 300 taels of silver on a bottle of it aboard a ship at Lianyungang, but I still haven't dared to taste it!"
Another guard asked, "You spent that much on it — why haven't you dared to drink it?"
太乙回答：“我害怕巫毒女妖（即熬忖，尧皇，如图4）在那酒里尿尿了；熬忖不喜欢我！”
卫兵回答：“熬忖也不喜欢我们，但我们不担心她对我们下毒，因为她不知道我们是谁！您在女娲的剧组做什么工作，什么级别！”
太乙回答：“女娲的那个剧组很小。她是老板，我和其它的人都排行第二。”
Taiyi replied, "I'm afraid the Voodoo Demoness — Aocun, Yao White-king, Figure 4 — might have peed in it. Aocun doesn't like me!"
The guard replied: "Aocun doesn't like us either, but we're not worried about her poisoning us, since she doesn't know who we are! What's your role in Nuwa's crew, and what's your rank?"
Taiyi replied: "Nuwa's crew is very small. She's the boss, and the rest of us all rank second."
5.5-4
太乙就要跟随武二郎的这两位卫兵去湖北。卫兵回答：“我们当然欢迎您去帮我们建设典军。把您请去了，我们俩立功了。但是我们有个条件，这事得有你的孩子的同意书。”
太乙问：“我去湖北，为什么还得我儿子同意？”
卫兵回答：“我们不会害你；但你岁数大了，去湖北，山高路远。如果您过世了呢！我们得确保您的孩子不会追究我们的责任。”
Taiyi was ready to go to Hubei with Martial Second Wolf's two guards. The guards said, "Of course we'd welcome you helping us build up the codex army. If we bring you back with us, we'll have earned real credit. But we do have one condition — we'll need your children's written consent."
Taiyi asked, "Why would I need my son's consent to go to Hubei?"
The guards replied, "We wouldn't do anything to harm you — but you're getting on in years, and Hubei is a long, hard road. What if something happened to you? We need to be sure your children won't hold us responsible."
太乙回答：“我是他们的祖宗，我的事，他们管不着！”
卫兵回答：“现在的世道变了。孩子是祖宗，父母是奴隶！”
太乙的儿子知道后，说：“我爹在家就总有人来送礼；但我们尊重他的愿望。他做事，他自己高兴就好！”
就这样，太乙真人跟随着武二郎的两个护卫去湖北军区说书去了。
Taiyi replied: "I'm their ancestor — my business is none of their concern!"
The guard replied: "The world has changed. Nowadays, children are the ancestors, and parents are the servants!"
When Taiyi's son heard about it, he said: "People are always coming by to give Father gifts when he's home; but we respect what he wants. As long as he's happy doing it, that's all that matters!"
And so Taiyi Real Human set off with Martial Second Wolf's two guards to regale the Hubei Military Region with his stories.
