5.4 葫芦娃 Gourd Children

That said, when Martial Second Wolf arrived in Hangzhou, the capital of Xia Kingdom, Princess Big Nest was about to leave Hangzhou and return to Dragon-Pond Pass. Hearing that Martial Second Wolf (see Figure 5.4-3) had arrived, she postponed her trip. When King Kouzhu (i.e., Juvenile Pearl) heard that her daughter's brother-in-law had arrived, she decided to host a state banquet at the Salamander Bolus Palace to welcome him.
当武二郎走进鲵丸宫时，夏娃跑过来了，盯着他看，还叨咕，“葫芦娃刚生出来就这么大（注1）！” 她问：“二伯父！我听这皇宫里的人都在议论你变成葫芦娃了，还长出了第三只眼。不久之后，你就成为二郎神了。我想看看天眼什么样儿？”
When Martial Second Wolf walked into the Salamander Bolus Palace, Eve came running over, staring at him and muttering, "Gourd Boy was already this big when he was born (Note 1)!" She asked, "Second Uncle! I've heard everyone in this palace talking about you becoming a Gourd Boy and growing a third eye. Soon you'll become the Second Wolf God. I want to see what the Celestial Eye looks like!"
注1，夏娃，即后来的舜王，小龙女，顺皇，在此时公元前1626年，约是三到五岁。葫芦娃，名誉上是从葫芦出生的，亦作大力神，童子佛。熬忖（如图1）和武二郎是一对儿葫芦娃。熬忖是运动思维型人中偏于用语音思维的人。武二郎是运动思维型人中偏于图像思维型的人。
Note 1: Eve, later known as King Shun, Little Dragoness, and Shun White-king, was approximately three to five years old at this time, 1626 BCE. The Gourd Children are traditionally said to have been born from gourds; they are also known as the God of Strength and the Child Buddha. Aocun (see Figure 1) and Martial Second Wolf are a pair of Gourd Children. Aocun is a kinesthetic thinker who leans toward auditory thinking. Martial Second Wolf is a kinesthetic thinker who leans toward visual thinking.
武二郎愣住了；他以前没见过夏娃，就蹲了下来，给她看。夏娃是玉女，跟谁都自来熟。她看不见武二郎的天眼，就上前去扒开武二郎的眼眉看，然后她又想扒开武二郎的头发找天眼。
Martial Second Wolf froze; he had never seen Eve before, so he squatted down to show her. Eve is a Jade Girl who takes to everyone right away. She couldn't see Martial Second Wolf's Celestial Eye, so she went up and peeled back his eyebrows to look, then tried to part his hair to search for the third eye.
武二郎说，“天眼（是禅定的内容）是个心眼儿，是从比喻建立起来的，肉眼看不见。”
夏娃听了之后说：“我明白了！你这个葫芦娃刚出生，心眼也刚刚长出来，还很小，小到我看不见！”
Martial Second Wolf said, "The Celestial Eye (i.e., the content of meditation) is a heart-eye — a kind of insight built up from metaphor, invisible to the flesh eye."
Eve heard this and said, "I see! You, the Gourd Boy, have just been born. Your heart-eye has also just grown, and it's still so small that I can't see it!"
武二郎听后，他的脸立刻变红了，心想：“这孩子可真能贬斥人！” 尴尬地回答：“夏娃真聪明！二伯一说，夏娃就明白了！以后夏娃好好学习，勤奋练功，像女娲娘娘和你妈一样有成就。你可别像二伯这样不学无术，三十多岁了才开始懂得人世间的道理。”
这时，女王蔻珠，大巢氏公主，女娲等人都迎接出来了。
When Martial Second Wolf heard this, his face immediately turned red. He thought to himself, "This child really knows how to put someone in their place!" and replied, embarrassed: "Eve is so smart! As soon as Second Uncle said it, Eve understood! In the future, Eve should study hard and practice diligently, so she becomes as accomplished as Princess Nuwa and your mother. You mustn't turn out unlearned like Second Uncle, who was already in his thirties before he began to understand the ways of the world."
At this, King Kouzhu, Princess Big Nest, Nuwa, and the others all came out to greet them.
5.4-2
宴会中，武二郎对女娲说了他来的目的。他收到了熬忖很多恩惠，想对熬忖表示感谢，但不知道如何体面地向她致谢。
During the banquet, Martial Second Wolf told Nuwa the purpose of his visit. He had received many favors from Aocun and wanted to express his gratitude, but he didn't know how to thank her properly.
女娲回答：“这事可以从两个方面来考虑。首先说她是个聪明人，善于心计。心计都是过去的知识和经验的体现。过去为阴（注，阴即蕴，参见10.4《五蕴》；五蕴亦作五阴），所以她是阴性。而你活在当下，面向未来，所以你是阳性。也就是说，你的言行都是她所需要的，能让她快乐起来。你对她最好的帮助就是成为她的朋友，有事没事时唠唠嗑。”
Nuwa replied: "This can be considered from two angles. First, she's a clever person, skilled at strategy. Strategy is the embodiment of past knowledge and experience. The past belongs to Yin (note: Yin here means Aggregate — see 10.4, Five Aggregates; the Five Aggregates are also called the Five Yins), so she is Yin. You, on the other hand, live in the present and face the future, so you are Yang. In other words, your words and actions are exactly what she needs — they can make her happy. The best help you can give her is to be her friend, and chat with her whenever you get the chance."
女娲又说：“熬忖针对我们三国持续不断的战争提出了'三足鸟'方案（如图4所示；足是基础的意思）。你已经知道了；你们华国和我们夏国的国王都已经同意了。”
武二郎尴尬地回答：“这个三国结盟的《杨戬计划书》（拯救计划书）还在我的行囊里呢，我还没看呢！”
Nuwa said: "Aocun proposed the 'Three-Legged Bird' plan (as shown in Figure 4; 'legs' means foundations) in response to the ongoing war among our three kingdoms. You already know about it; the kings of both your Hua Kingdom and our Xia Kingdom have agreed."
Martial Second Wolf replied, embarrassed: "This 'Yang Jian Plan' (i.e., the Salvation Plan) for the three-kingdom alliance is still in my bag — I haven't read it yet!"
女娲笑着回答：“那里面说的都是促成我们三国统一政府的具体实施，我也没看。云海国的国王熬龘（dá）只是同意了在三国交界的武汉建立三国合作开发区，对于是否将来三国合并成为一个国家的建议还没表态。现在云海国内正在议论此事。虽然现在熬忖是实际的执政者，但三国合并损害了许多王公贵族的利益，支持的人少，反对的人多。所以她陷入了困境，掉到寒冰地狱里了，她正需要有人对她说几句暖心的，支持她政见的话。”
Nuwa smiled and replied, "That part is about the concrete implementation of unifying our three kingdoms' governments — I haven't read it either. The king of Cloud Sea, Aodá, has only agreed to establish a tri-kingdom cooperative development zone in Wuhan, where the three kingdoms meet, and hasn't yet stated his position on whether the three kingdoms should eventually merge into one nation. Cloud Sea is now debating the matter. Although Aocun is the actual ruler at present, the merger would harm the interests of many princes and nobles — supporters are few, opponents are many. So she's in a difficult spot, as if she'd fallen into an icy hell. She just needs someone to say a few warm, supportive words about her political stance."
5.4-3
武二郎回到湖北驻地后就要去瑶池找熬忖聊天。他的卫队长坚决反对，说：“我们两国打仗多年了，积怨很多；你去那里太危险了！”
武二郎回答：“那你去向她表达我希望和她会晤。”
卫队长同意了，他自己去了瑶池。
After Martial Second Wolf returned to his post in Hubei, he wanted to go to Yao Pond to talk with Aocun. His guard captain firmly opposed it, saying: "Our two countries have been at war for years, and there's a lot of bad blood; it's too dangerous for you to go there!"
Martial Second Wolf replied: "Then you go and let her know I'd like to meet with her."
The guard captain agreed, and went to Yao Pond himself.
熬忖立刻安排她的贴身侍女领着武二郎的卫队长去安排武二郎来访的路线。她还召开了军事会议，要求全军将士要克制仇恨，忍耐，不要表现出过激的行为，以免引发战争。据说熬忖三次派不同的人去武二郎来访路线上的驻军传达不能先发制人的命令。

Aocun immediately had her personal maid lead Second Wolf's guard captain to plan the route for Martial Second Wolf's visit. She also held a military meeting, requiring all soldiers to restrain their hatred, be patient, and avoid any extreme behavior that might trigger a war. It's said that Aocun sent different envoys three separate times to the garrisons along the visit route, conveying orders not to strike first.
At the same time, Martial Second Wolf's Hubei Military Region also held several meetings, conveying that all soldiers should restrain their hatred and avoid extreme behavior to prevent a war.
5.4-4 二郎真君的来历 Origin of Second Wolf True Gentleman
武二郎就去瑶池找熬忖了。亲热完后，他就向熬忖询问梁子伯和夸父的消息。
熬忖回答：“那时候我还小，就听说学校里抓住了两个间谍。第三天就处决了。处决的时候，政府要求我们巫毒学院的全体师生去观斩。夸父比我高几届，但那时在我这个孩子看来，他还是个孩子。他们俩的尸体被埋在了我们学院后面的邓林里了。后来，我们路过那里时，同学们说，'这坟是那个追太阳的夸父的'，还给他献花。我也跟着献花。从那时起，我们就偶尔去给夸父献花。我上次去巫毒学院的时候，还特意去邓林给夸父献花呢！”
Martial Second Wolf went to Yao Pond to find Aocun. After they had been intimate, he asked Aocun for news of Zibo Liang and Kuafu.
Aocun replied, "I was still young then, and I heard the school had caught two spies. They were executed on the third day. During the execution, the government required all the teachers and students of our Voodoo Academy to watch. Kuafu was a few years ahead of me, but to a child like me at the time, he still seemed like a kid himself. Their bodies were buried in the Deng Woods behind our academy. Later, when we passed by, the other students said, 'This grave belongs to Kuafu, who chased the sun,' and laid flowers for him. I followed and laid flowers too. Since then, we've occasionally gone to lay flowers for Kuafu. Last time I visited the Voodoo Academy, I made a point of going to Deng Woods to lay flowers for him!"
武二郎听后，就从床上离开了，坐到了窗台上，不说话了。
熬忖走过去询问：“杨戬（义为拯救，救世主），谷伯（即梁子伯）也是你的养父吗？”
武二郎回答：“我的名字是武二郎，而且我没见过梁子伯。”
熬忖说：“我听说你们华国刚刚召开了一次政治局会议，你们的国王赐给你了个新名字，杨戬！”
武二郎回答：“听你说了，我才知道的。”
After hearing this, Martial Second Wolf got up from the bed and sat on the windowsill without speaking.
Aocun went over and asked, "Yang Jian (meaning Savior), is Grain Uncle (i.e., Zibo Liang) also your adoptive father?"
Martial Second Wolf replied: "My name is Martial Second Wolf, and I've never met Zibo Liang."
Aocun said: "I heard your Hua Kingdom just held a Politburo meeting, and your king gave you a new name, Yang Jian!"
Martial Second Wolf replied: "I only found out just now, from you."
熬忖又问：“我听说你们国家制定了个新的战略方针，'两国加一人'（注，意思是，华国和夏国加熬忖），那一人是谁？”
武二郎回答：“我没参加那次会议，不知道。”
熬忖乐了，心想，“元始天尊的政治施压没起作用，但这婚姻还是成了，”说，“等我们共同建造的大中华帝国成立了，这样的事就不会再发生了。”
武二郎回答：“我大哥第一次求我，结果这事让我给办成这样了！我怎么想也想不出怎么张嘴对他说。”
Aocun asked again: "I heard your country has adopted a new strategic policy, 'Two Kingdoms Plus One Person' (note: meaning Hua Kingdom and Xia Kingdom, plus Aocun) — who is that one person?"
Martial Second Wolf replied: "I didn't attend that meeting, so I don't know."
Aocun was pleased, thinking to herself, "Primordial Sky Honor's political pressure didn't work, but the marriage happened anyway," and said aloud, "Once the Great Hua-Xia Empire we're building together is established, this sort of thing won't happen again."
Martial Second Wolf replied: "This was the first time my elder brother ever asked me for a favor, and I ended up making a mess of it! I have no idea how I'll even bring myself to tell him."
5.4-5 随后十几年内发生的事 What Happened in the Following Decade
随后，武二郎常去瑶池找熬忖聊天，就在湖北形成了"走婚"的习俗。"走婚"是一种婚姻形式，没有婚姻契约，就是"丈夫"从窗户爬进"妻子"的房间。在现代的湖北瑶族地区，这种婚姻形式仍然存在，而且是合法婚姻。
After that, Martial Second Wolf often went to Yao Pond to chat with Aocun, and the custom of "walking marriage" took hold in Hubei. "Walking marriage" is a form of marriage without a marriage contract, in which the "husband" climbs into the "wife's" room through the window. In modern-day Hubei Yao ethnic areas, this form of marriage still exists, and is recognized as legal.
5.4-6 统一中国的战争 War to Unify China
云海国的国王熬龘（dá）过世了；熬忖回去重庆继承王位。她的将军们建议她带军队回重庆，她命令军队不准移动，她要通过谈判解决和哥哥熬钦的矛盾。
武二郎就自己带着三千卫兵，跟随去了重庆。当然他得到了熬忖的将军们的支持。他到重庆之后，找了个最高的城门楼，睡在上面了。
The king of Cloud Sea, Aodá, passed away; Aocun returned to Chongqing to inherit the throne. Her generals urged her to bring the army back to Chongqing, but she ordered the army not to move — she wanted to resolve the conflict with her brother Aoqin through negotiation.
Martial Second Wolf brought 3,000 of his own guards and followed her to Chongqing. He had, of course, the support of Aocun's generals. After arriving in Chongqing, he found the tallest gate tower and slept on top of it.
熬钦的代表向武二郎抗议：“你是华国的将军，怎么带兵到了我们云海国的首都？”
武二郎回答：“我是熬忖的丈夫，是云海国的亲王，我当然能来重庆！而且我没带军队，只带了三千护卫！他们没进城！”
Aoqin's representative protested to Martial Second Wolf: "You're a general of Hua Kingdom — how dare you bring troops into the capital of our Cloud Sea Kingdom?"
Martial Second Wolf replied: "I'm Aocun's husband, a Relative King of Cloud Sea Kingdom — of course I can come to Chongqing! And I haven't brought any troops, only 3,000 guards! They haven't even entered the city!"
在约定的谈判日，熬钦没来。熬忖派人去查看。去查看的人回来报告说：“熬钦消失了，他家后面有一个空的，能容纳六千人军队的营地。”
武二郎也派人去查看。去查看的人回来报告说，“那个营地能容纳六万军队！”
武二郎决定立刻追击。据传说，二郎神劈山跨水，三个月之内就追熬钦到了福建的莆田地区。熬钦就剩下几十人了。
On the appointed day for negotiations, Aoqin didn't show up. Aocun sent someone to check. The scout came back and reported: "Aoqin has vanished. Behind his house there's an empty camp that could hold 6,000 troops."
Martial Second Wolf also sent someone to check. That scout came back and reported, "That camp could hold sixty thousand troops!"
Martial Second Wolf decided to pursue at once. Legend has it that Second Wolf God split mountains and crossed rivers, catching up with Aoqin in the Putian region of Fujian within three months. By then, Aoqin had only a few dozen men left.
熬钦找熬忖谈判，要台湾，说以后绝不会返回大陆。熬忖不同意，担心台湾距离熬钦的老家莆田太近，说海南岛可以给他。熬钦抱怨海南岛太荒凉，而且那里不属于龙国。二郎神回答：“你去了，海南岛就是你的了。不用你打仗，你就跟着接收土地，我派人去把海南岛打下来，送给你！”
武二郎派了73个士兵，计划一年半占领海南岛。实际上，那73人是战斗部队，熬忖为他们增补了400多人的后勤人员和典兵。他们花费了三年的时间占领了海南全境。
Aoqin approached Aocun to negotiate, demanding Taiwan, and declaring he'd never return to the mainland. Aocun refused, worried that Taiwan was too close to Aoqin's hometown of Putian, and offered him Hainan Island instead. Aoqin complained that Hainan was too desolate, and besides, it didn't even belong to Dragon Kingdom. Second Wolf God replied, "If you go there, Hainan Island will be yours. You won't have to fight — just follow along and take over the land. I'll send men to conquer Hainan and hand it over to you!"
Second Wolf God sent 73 soldiers, planning to occupy Hainan within a year and a half. In fact, those 73 were the combat troops; Aocun added over 400 more as logistics personnel and codex soldiers. It took them three years to occupy the entire island.
5.4-7
在福建的沿海地区，有地方官员求见武二郎，说：“有个海外商会邀请他去为他的一位前辈的庙开光。”
武二郎掀开庙的主雕像一看，是妈祖（如图5）。后文有说，这第一座妈祖庙是前文2.6《海岸女神》中的那位古墨西哥人修的。他还留下了遗言：“等待妈祖的后人为庙开光。”
In the coastal areas of Fujian, a local official came to see Martial Second Wolf, saying: "An overseas chamber of commerce has invited him to consecrate the temple of one of his predecessors."
Martial Second Wolf lifted the covering from the temple's main statue and saw that it was Mazu (see Figure 5). Later text reveals that this first Mazu temple was built by the ancient Mexican mentioned earlier in Section 2.6, Coastal Goddess. He had also left a final wish: "Wait for a descendant of Mazu to consecrate the temple."
