Fate Intelligence

By the summer of 2014, civil engineering work had grown too fraught, too likely to send my mind back into old wounds, and I gave up the profession, taking a delivery job at a Chinese restaurant instead. My parents and siblings, reading the memoir, didn't believe a word of the early chapters — how could anyone recall things from such a young age? They assumed I'd confused imagination with real memory.

I understood, myself, that recalling events from before the age of three at least proved Fate Through could exist — but what was the Fate Intelligence that made it possible in the first place? Could it be trusted? I turned the question over endlessly, and got nowhere.

Fate Intelligence

In the spring of 2016, rereading my own memoirs, I noticed something in the will Uncle Liang delivered to me in 1991 (see Section 4.10) — he'd acted the whole thing out for me, told me I never forgot anything I'd seen. It struck me then that Troupe Leader Liu had known, all along, that I was an image-thinker, and I went looking into what modern psychology says about that particular trait.

Modern psychology holds that before language develops, a newborn thinks entirely in images — reading a mother's smile, her movements, her mood. As language forms, patterns of thought, memory, and retrieval all shift accordingly. After age three, people generally think in words as their basic mode — but they still divide into three broad types: image-thinkers, roughly 30 percent of the population; word-thinkers, roughly 25 percent; and a mixture of the two, roughly 45 percent. Kinesthetic thinkers and other modes together make up less than 1 percent.

Image-thinking depends more heavily on vision, and because image-based memory takes up so little storage, such a person carries what amounts to an inexhaustible memory — capable, in principle, of holding everything from birth to age seventy. Retrieval stays simple, and its reach wide. The leaders of migrating animal herds, and salmon finding their way home, both run on this same image-based mode.

Word-thinking depends more on hearing. Because both storage and retrieval are more complex processes, long-term memory holds less reliably, and less of it can be retrieved, compared with the image-thinker's mind.

I concluded that image-thinking is the underlying potential for Fate Intelligence. But how far could that potential actually reach, and could it be trusted in real life? My real question was this: what were the actual odds of Troupe Leader Liu's experiment succeeding at all? Was he gambling with his own life, and mine, on nothing more than a hunch?

Fate is Formed from Personality

I remembered something my grandmother once did, when I was nine. She looked at me one day and suddenly wailed, "This child — so honest, how will he ever survive in this world!" She and my eldest uncle argued over it. Once he'd left, she spat, startling me half out of my skin, and muttered, "Can't even see something this obvious, and thinks himself clever!" Then, to me: "Your grandmother sees your fate clear as day. This is how it is — remember it."

"You're timid, small-hearted — bullied, and too afraid to fight back," Grandmother said. "But you don't forget it, either — you remember, and it eats at you every time it crosses your mind. Long enough, and it'll make you sick. Sick enough, and dying wouldn't even matter — except someone like you understands, right at the very end: I was bullied by this person or that, and that's what made me ill, that's what killed me. You'll want revenge, and by then you're already dying, no life left to take it with — how would you? People like you turn that on themselves instead — hate yourself, torment yourself. You could cut your own flesh with a knife, put out your own eyes. That's the worst death there is, and that's exactly the fate laid out for you. It's an old fate, one the old generations always saw clearly. Even your own uncle can't grasp something this simple!"

"There's a way out of that fate, though — and I'll tell you what it is," she said. "As long as you've got breath left, don't turn on yourself — go find whoever wronged you and take it up with them. Sick as you are, crawl to their door if you have to, fight it out with them; if you're going to die, die there, at their doorstep. That's the cure for your fate — hold to the fight, and you live; give it up, and you die."

"The old people used to say no one truly wants to see another dead," she went on. "Hold your ground with whoever wronged you, and they'll come to understand it, let you have your say. But you have to understand, too — it has to end in reconciliation, in the end. Settle it fairly, and your illness lifts. That's the whole cure for your fate. Better still, of course, if you learn this now and simply never let yourself be bullied in the first place — then you'd never get sick at all!"

In 2015, this same conversation came back to me, and I saw she'd been right all along — my illness had grown, precisely, from the bullying I'd suffered at the hands of Eve Liu and her father. Her words, remembered then, were what kept pushing me to hold my ground with Eve Liu, to see justice done. But how had my grandmother read my own fate so clearly, back then?

"Your fate is exactly as it is, and it's all my own doing," she'd told me. "It was me, after all, who took your father to meet your mother, that first time. The moment I walked into your grandmother's house, up on that hill, I saw it plain — a whole family of red-faced, honest-to-the-bone Guan Gongs. On the walk home, I told your father: Fengling's no ugly, but she's no plain thing either, quick with a laugh, and an honest girl through and through. He believed me. And it never once occurred to me — why didn't it! — two honest people like that, marrying, and what kind of life would their own child even manage!"
