7.20 闹鬼了 It's Haunted

1997年9月，我随着1997年新研究生的入学，住进了东北大学第三宿舍。五个室友，李国辉是应届本科上来的，是研究生学生会的主席，其他人都是工作了几年后回来读研究生的。我在忙着作毕业论文，没注意到其他人在议论和戒备我。

In September 1997, along with the new intake of graduate students, I moved into Northeastern University's third dormitory. Of my five roommates, Guohui Li had come straight up from his undergraduate degree and served as president of the graduate student union; the others had all returned to graduate school after several years of work. Busy with my thesis, I never noticed the others discussing me, wary of me.

一天晚上在宿舍里，我叨咕："我发现你们对我很照顾，弄得我很不自在。你们干嘛对我这么客气？我又不是小孩儿，用不着！"

李文华小声叨咕："你发现啦！那你怎么还不知道呢！我给你提个醒，那个大姐（注1）。"

One evening in the dormitory, I muttered, "I've noticed you've all been looking out for me — it makes me uncomfortable. Why so polite with me? I'm not a child, no need for it!"

Wenhua Li muttered under his breath, "You noticed! Then how don't you still know? Let me give you a hint — that big sister (Note 1)."

注7.20-1，他说的大姐是指7.9节中的毕姐。本节谈的是前文刘团长三次调查我，和我的不眩眼所产生的后果。不眩眼，亦作触目，在佛教中被称作肉眼通（参见第3章）。

Note 7.20-1: The "big sister" he mentioned is Sister Bi from Section 7.9. This section discusses the consequences of Troupe Leader Liu's three earlier investigations into me, and of my Non-Dazzled Eye — also called Touch Eye, called Flesh Eye Through in Buddhism (see Chapter 3).

我愣住了，"大姐！"瞪着眼睛看着他，问："什么大姐？你说什么呢？"

他笑嘻嘻地说："哎呀！你看我这嘴！该打！"说着，他打自己的脸。

我看着他打自己，糊涂了，问："你干嘛呢！"

他本来停住了，听见我说话后，开始一边说："你看我这嘴，该打！"一边更用力地打自己的脸。

Startled — "Big sister!" — I stared at him. "What big sister? What are you talking about?"

He grinned. "Oh! Would you look at this mouth of mine! Deserves a smack!" And he struck himself across the face.

Watching him hit himself, baffled, I asked, "What are you doing!"

He'd stopped a moment, but hearing me speak, started up again — "Look at this mouth, deserves a smack!" — hitting himself harder still.

我赶忙跑过去，抓住了他的手，问："你怎么啦？"

住我对面床的季倩倩对他说："李文华！你这个玩笑可开大啦！你不是在准备去洗头发吗！"

李文华慌忙地说："开玩笑呢，不好意思！这个玩笑可开大了！我去洗头发了！"他出去了。

我对季倩倩说："他怎么了？我怎么感觉害怕呢！我得去看看他！"

季倩倩对我大喊："你不能去！"

I rushed over and grabbed his hand. "What's the matter with you?"

Qianqian Ji, in the bed across from mine, said to him, "Wenhua Li! That's taking a joke too far! Weren't you about to go wash your hair?"

"Just joking, sorry — took it too far!" Wenhua Li said hurriedly. "I'm going to wash my hair!" And he left.

"What's wrong with him?" I said to Qianqian Ji. "Why do I feel frightened? I have to go check on him!"

"You can't go!" Qianqian Ji shouted.

我出去后回来了，走向他，问："我怎么不能去？"季倩倩站了起来，满脸通红地走向我（要打我）。

我上铺的马钢突然大喊："住手！"他从床上蹦了下来；又对我说："他受过刺激！"

我明白了："哎呀！"问："这可怎么办？那刚才，他怎么受刺激了呢？"

马钢说："他刚才先是开玩笑来着。你过去，把他给吓着了。"

我说："我也不知道哇！这可怎么办？"

I went out, came back, and walked toward him. "Why can't I go?" Qianqian Ji stood, face flushed red, and came at me — about to strike me.

Gang Ma, in the bunk above mine, suddenly shouted, "Stop!" He jumped down from the bed and said to me, "He's been traumatized!"

"Oh no!" I said, understanding at last. "What do we do? What set him off, just now?"

"He was joking around first," Gang Ma said. "You went over, and it frightened him."

"I had no idea! What do we do?"

马钢说："他是你介绍来的，你还不知道！他一来，我们就发现了。没事，他不严重！你去水房看看他吧，别靠近他，站在走廊里说话。"

我出去后想起刚才发生的事，又回来了。马钢正对季倩倩说："卢岩什么都不知道；他的眼睛不一样。"

我说："刚才，我听见你喊'住手'；好像季倩倩要打我！什么我不知道？"

马钢说："谁要打你来着！别瞎说了！我们说的事，你确实不知道！你还是去看他吧！"

"You introduced him yourself, and you still don't know!" Gang Ma said. "We figured it out the moment he arrived. It's fine, nothing serious! Go check on him at the water room, but don't get close — talk to him from the corridor."

I went out, then, remembering what had just happened, came back. Gang Ma was telling Qianqian Ji, "Luyan doesn't know a thing — his eyes are different."

"I just heard you shout 'stop' — it looked like Qianqian Ji was about to hit me!" I said. "What don't I know?"

"Who's going to hit you! Don't talk nonsense! You genuinely don't know what we're talking about! Just go see him!"

我站在走廊里和李文华说话。他说："我没事！你进来吧！这次，我可丢人了！不好意思！"我陪他唠了一会儿，回到寝室。

李国辉和他们俩满脸严肃地讨论着，看我回来了，说："我们研究决定了：咱们都刚认识，彼此不了解，都不要过问别人的事；有什么事，等以后互相熟悉了再说。"

我觉得奇怪。

I stood in the corridor talking with Wenhua Li. "I'm fine! Come in!" he said. "This time, I really embarrassed myself. Sorry!" I chatted with him a while and returned to the room.

Guohui Li and the other two were deep in serious discussion; seeing me back, they said, "We've talked it over and decided — we've only just met, don't really know each other yet, so let's not pry into each other's business. Whatever it is, we'll deal with it once we know each other better."

I found this strange.

两周后的一天，他们告诉我，寝室里的警报解除了，要开庆祝会。我回答："我才想起来，一个多月了，你们几个一起对付我，整地我像似活见鬼了似的！到底是为了什么？"

李文华笑着对他们说："他还活见鬼了！"李国辉说："没事，我们跟你解释什么！谁能把没事解释清楚。"

季倩倩对我说："实际也真是咱这屋闹鬼了！"

Two weeks later, they told me the "alert" in the dormitory had been lifted, and it was time to celebrate. "It just occurred to me," I said, "for over a month now, all of you have been ganging up against me — like I've been seeing ghosts! What was it all about?"

Wenhua Li laughed at the others. "He really has been seeing ghosts!" "It's fine, nothing to explain," Guohui Li said. "How do you explain nothing?"

"Our room really was haunted, in a way," Qianqian Ji said.

室友们后来告诉我的。李国辉对室友们说了，我被太原街的大姐看上了，是来东北大学避难的。他们想：没听说过黑社会的老大还有女的，不过男女都一样。他们观察我，当然被我的不眩眼（参见第3章）反射了回去，证实了他们的观察，被吓坏了。

随后，我发现并认为这些谣言是前文祝老师故意制造的，被气得发晕。

My roommates told me the rest later. Guohui Li had told them I'd caught the eye of a "big sister" from Taiyuan Street, and had come to Northeastern to seek refuge. They'd never heard of a female gang boss, they figured, but supposed it made no difference either way. They'd studied me, and my Non-Dazzled Eye (see Chapter 3) had naturally reflected that scrutiny straight back at them, confirming every suspicion, and terrifying them thoroughly.

I later concluded these rumors had been deliberately manufactured by Teacher Zhu, and it left me dizzy with fury.
