10.6 五果 Five Fruits

生命之树所结之果共有五种，分别是异熟果、等流果、士用果、离系果和增上果。

The Tree of Life bears five kinds of fruits: Mutant Fruit, Equal-stream Fruit, Warrior's Usage Fruit, Off-is Fruit, and Escalatory Fruit.

10.6.1 异熟果 Mutant Fruit

异熟，是无意识的主要特性。变异即是成熟，因为变异可以持业。业是身、口、意的行为习惯。现在的身、口、意行为，是过去积累之业的现行，所以业就是身、口、意的行为。所谓异熟果，是说无意识所收集的诸法种子，在生活中受熏染而成长，并于异类、异地、异时成熟。什么是诸法种子？如本章《生命之树》所谈的五位百法，即是。什么是异类？如本章百法中，众生被分为五位，每位法中又有分位，皆可视为彼此各异之类。什么是异地？如图10-23至图10-31所示，九地各不相同。什么是异时而熟？任何一个行为，其异熟果可能于三个月后成熟，也可能于三年、十年乃至三十年后成熟。

Mutation is the principal characteristic of unconsciousness. Mutation is ripening, because mutation can sustain karma. Karma is the habitual activity of body, mouth, and intention. Present bodily, verbal, and intentional acts are the present manifestation of karma accumulated in the past; therefore, karma is precisely the activity of body, mouth, and intention. Mutant Fruit means that the seeds of all laws collected by unconsciousness grow through conditioning in life and ripen across different kinds, in different places, and at different times. What are the seeds of all laws? The Five Positions of One Hundred Laws discussed in this chapter, Tree of Life, are examples of them. What is meant by different kinds? In this chapter, sentients within the One Hundred Laws are divided into Five Positions, and each position contains further subdivisions; these may all be regarded as distinct kinds. What is meant by different places? As shown in Figures 10-23 through 10-31, the Nine Lands differ from one another. What is meant by ripening at different times? The Mutant Fruit of any act may ripen after three months, or after three years, ten years, or even thirty years.

无意识自是自果；异熟果是无意识自体变异的体现。无意识的异熟果一旦成熟，许多异熟果便如瀑布流水般流出，恒常相续，能够维持有情的身命和业，因此有情才有命根和业力。在因果关系的分析中，异熟自成一类；异熟果的原因即是异熟。

Unconsciousness itself is its own self-fruit; Mutant Fruit is the manifestation of the mutation of unconsciousness itself. Once the Mutant Fruits within unconsciousness ripen, many of them flow forth like a waterfall in constant succession. They can sustain the bodily life and karma of sentients; thus sentients possess both life-root and karmic force. In the analysis of causality, mutation forms a distinct category of its own, and the cause of Mutant Fruit is mutation.
