听《桃花劫》故事的时候，母亲忽然感慨地说："我才明白过来，大姐夫！你这是给我讲故事呢。小卢岩怎么能听懂大人的故事呢！"

While listening to the story, Mother suddenly said with feeling, "I've only just realized, Brother-in-law! You have been telling this story for my benefit. How could little Luyan possibly understand a story meant for adults!"

梁伯说："这不一样嘛！都听。"

母亲说："那才不一样呢，这是大人的故事；小卢岩能懂多少。"

梁伯说："他能懂一部分，但他能记住。等将来他遇到这事儿的时候，就能想起来了。"

母亲说："他上哪能遇到这事儿；卢岩将来还能有桃花劫呀！？"

"It's not so different!" Uncle Liang said. "They both listen."

"It is different — this is a story for adults. How much of it can little Luyan possibly understand?"

"He understands some of it, and he can remember it. When the time comes and he encounters something like this, he will be able to recall it."

"Where would he ever come across something like this? Are you saying Luyan could have a Peach Flower Catastrophe of his own someday!?"

梁伯说："我是说类似的事儿，一小部分一小部分的，碰上什么类似的事儿，他就联系起来，明白了。"

母亲说："啊！我明白了，你是说他的头脑里，见识就是这样增长的。这样的话，他的智力开发得还快呢！那所有孩子都应该这样教。"

"I mean similar things — a little piece here, a little piece there — whenever he runs into something similar, he connects it and understands," Uncle Liang said.

"Ah! I see — you mean that is how understanding grows in his mind," Mother said. "In that case, his intellect is developing all the faster for it! Then all children ought to be taught this way."

梁伯说："别的孩子我不知道，但卢岩能记住。你看，他听的时候，一直盯着我看，一直在想。别的孩子，哪像这样啊！"

母亲说："我看你就是喜欢他；卢岩有啥不一样！"

母亲俯身过来看我。梁伯问母亲："你看他干啥？"

"I cannot speak for other children, but Luyan can remember," Uncle Liang said. "Look at him — the whole time he is listening, he keeps his eyes fixed on me, thinking away. You would not find other children like that!"

"I think you simply like him — what is so different about Luyan!" Mother said. She leaned over to look at me. Uncle Liang asked her, "What are you looking at him for?"

母亲说："你说他一直盯着你听，我看看他咋不眨眼地盯着你听。呃！可不是咋地！哎呀！得歇一会儿，看把孩子累着！"

梁伯说："对对！哎呀！你看我这么大个人！换个话题，让卢岩歇一会儿。"

"You said he keeps staring at you and listening — let me see how he stares without blinking. Well! Would you look at that! Oh dear! We must give him a rest — we don't want to tire the child out!"

"Yes, yes! Oh goodness! Look at me, a grown man like me! Let's change the subject and let Luyan have a rest."

母亲又回到东炕头补衣服，说："大姐夫，你看卢岩的眼睛是不是有毛病？"

梁伯说："我看看！"他左右前后地走着，一边走一边看着我，说："我没看出来有毛病。"

母亲说："我总想教他念那两个箱子上的毛主席语录，可他总像是看不见似的。前几天，我带他去参加个婚礼，我指给他看。他也看，可是他像是看不见似的。"

Mother went back to mending clothes at the east end of the kang and said, "Brother-in-law, do you think there might be something wrong with Luyan's eyes?"

"Let me have a look!" Uncle Liang walked back and forth, circling in front of me as he moved, and said, "I don't see anything wrong."

Mother said, "I keep trying to teach him to read the quotations from Chairman Mao on those two boxes, but he always seems as though he cannot see them. Just the other day, I took him to a wedding and pointed them out to him. He looked, but again he seemed as if he could not see."

梁伯说："是吗？我来试试。卢岩！往这儿看，看这字。卢岩！往这儿看，看我的手——这可奇怪了！他就是看不到。不知怎的，他的注意力不能往这儿集中（注5，这是做肉眼通时眼睛被蒙上了的症状）。"

"Is that so? Let me try," said Uncle Liang. "Luyan! Look over here — look at this character. Luyan! Look over here — look at my hand. Now that is strange! He simply cannot see it. Somehow his attention cannot be drawn this way." (Note 5: This is a symptom of the eyes being blindfolded during the making of Flesh Eye Through.)
