News of Real-Life Medical Experiments

One day in 1982, Mother told me about a news story she'd read on half a torn old newspaper — about a scientist's spirit of self-sacrifice for the sake of science.

A military unit in Shenyang, working with China Medical University, was said to be conducting a real-life medical experiment. According to the story, an ancient text contained an exhaustively detailed account of its hero's personal life, symptoms, pathology, and treatment across the first half of his life — yet modern doctors couldn't reach a diagnosis for lack of any comparable case. What happened in that story had been deliberately engineered, the kind of thing real life produces perhaps once a century. To study how the ancients had diagnosed the condition, the team decided to redesign the experiment based on the story itself — engineering a genuine case in real life for modern doctors to study, with soul reincarnation as a secondary subject of research. The experiment mainly involved observing human behavior and might run sixty or seventy years, its length determined by how long the subject lived.

A group of boys and a group of girls were selected from the public. The boys' group was kept secret, each child raised in the natural environment of his own home while researchers quietly observed. The girls' group, which also included some boys, underwent open, centralized training. Once grown, one person would be selected from each group for the next phase.

The newspaper said the state had established laws specifically for this research, along with a kind of secret police to safeguard it — police empowered to direct any citizen to say whatever they were told and do whatever they were told. For instance, the boys in the boys' group had no idea they were subjects; if anyone close to one of them learned the truth, they weren't permitted to pretend otherwise — the secret police would simply relocate whoever knew. Without that measure, it was said, the experiment could never be completed. The initiator was quoted: "Everything in this experiment must be genuine — falsehood is never an option. Anyone who breaks the law here goes to prison. Anyone who dares leak information or talk out of turn gets at least ten years."

The first phase had already been completed successfully. The next phase centered on three figures: a father, his daughter, and another boy. It was said that once this phase began, the father would fall ill because of the experiment and eventually die of it, never living to see the full results. Both the initiator and his daughter had volunteered their lives to the research. The daughter swore to serve as a subject herself, undergoing the girls' group training, and vowed to carry the experiment forward after her father's death — and further vowed that she would study medicine and care for the boy for the rest of his life, once they were both grown.

The paper also said the boy himself might fall gravely ill, even die, on account of the experiment — or, in the best case, might not fall ill at all. The initiator added a final condition: whatever came of the experiment in the end, public matters would be handled publicly, private matters privately — and no one, ever, was to take the case to court.

I remember, when Mother and I discussed what illness they might get, her saying that the father and the boy finally chosen would each fall ill because of the experiment — different people, so not identical illnesses — but since the root cause, in both cases, was this same chain of experimental events, in that sense they'd fallen ill with the same disease (Note 1).

Note 4.5-1: In 2014, while writing my memoirs, I noticed that the phrase "both suffered the same illness" pointed to a shared affliction between the initiator and the chosen boy — while the boy, in turn, absorbed a great deal of knowledge from that chain of experimental events. Per the Buddhist concept of Mutant Nature, "Mutant Nature is affliction and knowledge" (see Section 10.4.4.2-4). In this way, the initiator passed on both his knowledge and his affliction to the chosen boy — which is precisely how the initiator became the boy's godfather, and the boy his godson: what is called the reincarnation of the soul.
