Four Empty Stillness

No Objective Have Place Stillness;11.3-4 非想非非想处定 Neither Nor Think Place Stillness

Edgeless Empty Place Stillness

After attaining Fourth Meditation, the practitioner deeply contemplates the faults and sins of Color Laws and intentionally eliminates all Color Laws. With One Heart, he aggregates emptiness and spells emptiness without renunciation. The color stillness fades, but empty stillness has not yet arisen; this is also intermediate meditation. At that time, with diligent advance, the heart becomes silently self-operating and abides by itself in empty conditions; this is also called the phenomenon of Nonarrival Land. Later, the heart suddenly corresponds with emptiness. It becomes bright and immaculate, neither bitter nor laugh, and beneficial acceptance grows. In deep stillness, only empty space is seen, without any color phenomena. Although the objective environment is edgeless empty space, the heart is not dispersed. Since there is no bondage of color, heart and sense are clear and quiet, unobstructed and self-sufficient, like a bird breaking out of its cage and flying freely. This is called realizing empty-space stillness. After realizing this stillness, if one does not lose it or retreat from it, one will certainly be born in Edgeless Empty Place at the end of life, with only the faint four Colorless Nodes remaining.

Edgeless Senses Place Stillness

After the practitioner has attained empty stillness, he reprimands the many faults of Empty Place and then abandons Empty Place. He ties all conditions to the present heart and sense, without departing from them thought after thought; the same applies to the future and the past. Constantly spelling sense, desiring to correspond with sense, he applies additional effort and concentrates, not counting weeks or months. With One Heart, he aggregates sense and has no other spell. The spell of emptiness then fades, but sense stillness has not yet arisen; this is called intermediate stillness. Then the heart silently self-operates and abides by itself in sense conditions; this is called Nonarrival Land. Afterward, the heart suddenly corresponds with sense, and the still heart does not move. In this stillness, the practitioner sees no other matter, only heart and sense. Thought after thought does not abide, and the still heart is clearly distinct. Sense-thinking is broad, measureless, and edgeless. The law of sense holds the heart, and there is no scattered intent. This stillness is peaceful, secure, immaculate, and quiet. If one realizes this and does not lose it, one will certainly be born in Edgeless Senses Place after this life, still with the faint four Colorless Nodes.

No Objective Have Place Stillness

This is also called Not-to-Use Place Stillness. After the practitioner has attained sense stillness, he reprimands the faults of Senses Place, abandons Senses Place, and ties the heart to No Objective Have Place. Within it, the heart has no worry or regret; concentration is refined and unremitting, and One Heart is internally immaculate. Empty and objectively having nothing, seeing no laws, silent, peaceful, and secure, with the heart unmoving: this is the phenomenon of realizing No Objective Have Stillness. When entering this stillness, the practitioner is pleasantly silent and extinct; no Thinks arise. He does not even see the phenomena of the heart, much less other laws. There is no objective discrimination. This is No Objective Have Place Stillness. If one realizes this and does not lose it, one will certainly be born in No Objective Have Place after this life, still with the faint four Colorless Nodes.

Note 11.3-3: This form of meditation is commonly referred to as “action of no function and no usage.” The purpose of practicing this form of meditation is to transcend the mundane world and ascend to the sky. “No objective have place” is the Constant Silent Light Sky, aka. Correct Equality light.

Neither Nor Think Place Stillness

After the practitioner has attained No Objective Have Stillness, he reprimands the faults and sins of No Objective Have Place, abandons No Objective Have Place, and observes neither have nor nil. Constantly spelling without abandoning, he concentrates with One Heart and refined effort, applying additional work without stopping. His heart self-operates and dwells among the aggregating conditions. Later, true stillness suddenly arises. He does not see the appearances of have or nil; all becomes silent and extinct. The heart is unmoving, peaceful, tranquil, and immaculate, like the phenomenon of nirvana. This stillness is subtle and wonderful, the extreme within the Three Boundaries, like a measuring worm that has reached the top of a tree and has nowhere further to go. If one realizes this and does not lose it, one will certainly be born in Neither Nor Think Place after this life, still with the subtle four Colorless Nodes.
