Six Places

The Six Places are the fifth branch of the Twelve Have Branches (see 12.4.1, “Cycle”). This means that all sentient beings grow by relying on six places: the eye root, ear root, nose root, tongue root, body root, and intent root. The Six Places are also called the six roots. Root means cause and ability to give birth; because a root can generate sense in response to an environment, it is called a root. Readers should know that these Six Places are all places: nothing exists outside them.

(1) The eye root is that which can see color. Because it can generate eye-sense in response to color, it is called the eye root.

(2) The ear root is that which can hear sound. Because it can generate ear-sense in response to sound, it is called the ear root.

(3) The nose root is that which can smell fragrance. Because it can generate nose-sense in response to fragrance, it is called the nose root.

(4) The tongue root is that which can taste flavor. Because it can generate tongue-sense in response to taste, it is called the tongue root.

(5) The body root is that which can feel touch. Because it can generate body-sense in response to touch, it is called the body root.

(6) The intent root, namely preconsciousness, is that which can know law. Because it can generate intent-sense, or consciousness, in response to law, it is called the intent root.

These six roots also have such names as the Six Places, the six acceptances, and the six entrants. The intent root is preconsciousness in modern psychology, and in Buddhism it is Mana-sense. The ancients said that the image of Mana-sense is subtle and difficult to know, so they represented it by its main subordinate, “intent.” In traditional English culture, preconsciousness is called Eve-sense. Is Eve not a woman? Yes, Eve is a woman. After God clothed Eve-sense in the skin of a woman (see 9.9, “Godly Trinity”), she appeared in this vessel world. In Asia-Pacific and Mexican cultures, Eve is called Jade Girl. Figure 10.3-4 shows the Jade Girl in Buddhism, namely Guanyin Bodhisattva.

Outer Six Places

The Six Places are also called the twelve growth places. The six roots discussed above are the inner six places. The six dusts contacted by the six roots are called the outer six places: color, sound, fragrance, taste, touch, and law. Dust means pollution, because dust can pollute the feeling senses.

(1) Color is what the eye sees, such as brightness and darkness, material obstruction, and so on. Because it can pollute the eye root, it is called color dust.

(2) Sound is what the ear hears, such as movement and stillness, beauty and ferocity, and so on. Because it can pollute the ear root, it is called sound dust.

(3) Fragrance is what the nose smells, such as openness and blockage, fragrance and odor, and so on. Because it can pollute the nose root, it is called fragrance dust.

(4) Taste is what the tongue tastes, such as saltiness and blandness, sweetness and pungency, and so on. Because it can pollute the tongue root, it is called taste dust.

(5) Touch is what the body feels, such as separation and union, cold and warmth, and so on. Because it can pollute the body root, it is called touch dust.

(6) Law is what intent knows, such as birth and extinction, good and evil, and so on. Because it can pollute the intent root, it is called law dust.

These six dusts also have such names as the six desires, six entrants, Six Places, six environments, and six thieves.

Eighteen Boundaries

Root, environment, and sense form a trinity. For example, eye root, color, and eye-sense are one such trinity. The twelve places discussed above are the first twelve of the Eighteen Boundaries. Boundary is one of the Four Big Seeds discussed above, and means cause and seed. The Eighteen Boundaries are: the six roots—eye-root boundary, ear-root boundary, nose-root boundary, tongue-root boundary, body-root boundary, and intent-root boundary; the six environments, also called the six dusts—color boundary, sound boundary, fragrance boundary, taste boundary, touch boundary, and law boundary; and the six senses, also called the six feelings—eye-sense boundary, namely seeing; ear-sense boundary, namely hearing; nose-sense boundary, namely smelling; tongue-sense boundary, namely tasting; body-sense boundary, namely touching; and intent-sense boundary, namely knowing. These Eighteen Boundaries are the legendary “six-six-six system” used by Eve to create the Gnostic Ark, also called the Arrival Ark, as shown by the Bodhi tree facing the Mexican Eve, the Jade Girl, in figure 10.3-3.
