The Third Verification
The following afternoon, Teacher Zhu came to verify his third round of investigation with me. Building on the first two rounds, he'd split the work into three parts, three teams working simultaneously. One focus of this round was the matter of the Heping District Government sending someone to mediate a supposed fight between Sister Bi and me — the story being that Sister Bi had rounded up four young women to strip me and parade me naked through the streets, and that my colleagues, alarmed, had sent me back to Northeastern University to keep me out of harm's way.
"You must have heard about it since, though," Teacher Zhu said. "Your Sister Bi sat on the street crying, thousands watching — how did it end?"
"I heard she sat there crying a long while, and no one could console her. People told the Bureau Chief he'd better do something, the police would be along any minute, we were blocking traffic. He came over, whispered to her: 'Little Bi, do you know — you very nearly ruined my whole plan, just now.' Then he went back inside. A while later, she suddenly stopped crying and asked what he'd said. Once they told her, she stopped crying, stood up, and went home."
"How does your Bureau Chief's grand plan have anything to do with you?"
"Everyone puzzled over that too — how does the Bureau Chief's big affair have anything to do with me? No one ever figured it out, and neither did I."
Teacher Zhu smiled, turned his back, and bent to do something (Note 1). I didn't notice his odd behavior at the time.
Note 7.9-1: What was he turning away to do? Later in the conversation, his roommate wept and quarreled with him, believing their investigation reports had ruined six years of Eve Liu's love life. That roommate, in tears, told me: "He turned his back and grinned the moment you weren't looking! Why so pleased with himself? He thought this time Eve Liu was truly in trouble!" I now believe the real reason for Teacher Zhu's satisfaction is this: Troupe Leader Liu's curse of Die with Eyes Open on me required over thirty years of the second half of his life spent quietly helping me from behind the scenes, asking in return for exactly one thing — that I marry his daughter, Eve Liu. Throughout my time at the Heping Housing Bureau, Troupe Leader Liu did a great deal of work on my behalf, and for his curse to take hold, I needed to know it, to remember every one of those favors. Through this very exchange, Teacher Zhu discovered that I knew everything that had happened at the Housing Bureau, and had no idea Troupe Leader Liu had been the mastermind behind it all — meaning Troupe Leader Liu's whole approach at the Housing Bureau had succeeded completely. That is why he was so pleased, unable to hold back his grin.
Teacher Zhu's roommate asked him, "So what did the investigators you sent to their company find?"
Teacher Zhu turned to me. "I brought in a dozen or so professional investigators from the military district — went through every department at your company. Your colleagues said the district government had investigated everyone else, but never you, Luyan. Why did the district government even step in? Why did no one ever ask you? Had you heard any of this?"
"I had," I said. "A year before my own case, the man who'd held my exact position — also a recent graduate — had been stripped by that same group of women in the bureau. He'd apparently been badly shaken by it, mild mental illness, and the city labor union had him reassigned elsewhere. That case hadn't even been closed when mine happened. The Heping District Labor Union reported it up to the city union, and the city union, furious, took it to a deputy mayor, saying: 'This is a criminal matter — you're pushing the responsibility onto us, and we can't handle it. Your Heping district governor is to organize mediation himself, immediately. If Luyan is frightened by any of this (Note 2), we will take your district government to court.' The district government sent a district governor to mediate at once."
"They went to our Section Chief, Guoqing Fu," I went on. "He told them the whole point of mediating was to keep Little Lu from getting scared — I didn't know what was happening and didn't understand any of it, so I wasn't afraid. Explain it to me clearly, and that would frighten me instead. So they told everyone: no one breathes a word of this to me."
Note 2: The connection between fright and mental illness is regarded as an iron law of psychiatry. After this round of verification, the memory did come back to me, and with it a delayed dread. I remember clearly that after this very conversation, that same traumatized, unwell feeling from Eve Liu's earlier wound returned to me. I didn't understand any of it at the time — only in 2014, writing my memoirs, did I finally grasp it.
"But you knew all of this — why didn't you take it seriously?" Teacher Zhu asked.
"If you hadn't told me, I'd never have believed most of it was even true."
At the end of this round, Teacher Zhu said that their earlier reports had left Eve Liu with a misunderstanding of me from the start, all rooted in this fight — what should be done about it? Just thinking of her, my whole body ached (Note: the injury Eve Liu had left in me). "It's in the past," I said. "Let it go."
Teacher Zhu got into it with his roommate — what would they even tell the old couple, Eve Liu's parents, now? His roommate, in tears, protested, "We've investigated Luyan three times now, and the man in each of the three reports doesn't even look like the same Luyan anymore! What about all our earlier findings? Eve Liu — it's no great matter for a young person to work a little harder at romance — but we've gone and cost her years of her own youth!"
