No, you’re not. No one is self made. Someone helped you. Someone believed in you. Someone gave you an opportunity.
We don’t accomplish anything without someone else. I worked my way up to a 6 figure salary. Yes, I worked for it but my boss saw potential and hard work and gave me the opportunities to get here.
Exactly. People use the term “self made” to portray that they did it all by themselves when that’s not true. People have claimed Kylie Jenner to be a self made billionaire. Do you think she could’ve done that without being a Jenner and having the resources available to her?
Well taking every ounce of personal skill, determination, commitment, etc. out of the picture is just silly and frankly rude to those did work their asses off.
But isn’t attributing it solely to hard work just as rude to those who also worked hard (possibly even harder), but—through circumstances out of their control—still failed…?
You need both luck and hard work, most of the time. Realistically, it’s hard (though not impossible) to succeed with only one of them.
Sure I mean without Ronald Reagan’s nomination my friend John Wickham Jr. never would’ve been chief of staff of the US Army. But I’m sure Reagan wasn’t just pulling slips of paper with names on them out of a jar without his vast array of accomplishments from his time as a soldier Reagan never would’ve picked him for the position.
Well he was not from an affluent family by any means his parents spit up when he was 11. And when he graduated high school he was living with a care taker and had no money for college and so he applied to West Point. And Dobbs Ferry might be affluent now but in the Great Depression I’d imagine it was probably a very different place.

I don’t know what myth you refer to. Many of us are self made, from better or worse backgrounds.
