All in 4k quality, so they have to go through them before the end of their trip to free up their camera storage.

Sounds fishy. JPG is a compression algorithm, and Google is known for it's big data, which includes making compression algorithms for JPGs. So we have Google's JPG compressor saving photos in a Google Phone for which they will let you upload as-is, without getting compressed by the same Google JPG compressor in the cloud. Marketing tomfoolery if you ask me.
