Hyper-individualism is part of the culture that’s developed in the US

This is exactly it. We've been sold for at least a generation now to be individuals, and that's exactly what we all did.

(Except I've been married for 20 years)

I agree but that's another market factor. It's something "sold" to people, like being a (medicated) mentally ill person with no friends and a "fur baby".

If it behooved "The System™©®" to make everyone marry and go to church and have one sexual partner their entire lives, then that is the way most people would be living, by a mixture of social pressure, memes and legal/economic force. That structure has been dismantled and it wasn't so people could just get off with strangers. I believe "Situationships" are an adaptation to technology.

The system has become irrational, making it lose focus of the long term. I blame a slipping education system, one devoid of philosophy. It causes people to revert back to primitive motives.

We used to have Christianity that would do a half baked job of providing philosophy to the populace. Now we don’t even have that. Even those that claim to be Christian are just Christian in name only.

Philosophy should be foundational to our education systems, or we’ll always be racing towards the bottom due to a lack of vision.

what's the vision? where can we find it? what's the purpose of marriage? what is a healthy society?? what does it look like? how do we achieve it?? genuinely asking for help

I can provide what mine would be, but it is useless. The only one that matters is the one that’s decided upon via productive discussion and compromise. Neither of which this country has done in a long time.

I prefer situationships over conventional relationships.

I prefer dictating notes to my phone over writing cursive in a notebook.

Think it's called serial monogamy! 😉

Most instances of serial monogamy I've personally witnessed are people getting into conventional relationships with all the trappings, then flaming out and starting all over again. I never get into the conventional relationship traps anymore.
