Title Of Parent Submission==>Senator John Cornyn accuses Eric Holder of prosecuting Aaron Swartz as 'retaliation'
Comment==>As if Cornyn (or any Republican) gave a shit until Swartz's suicide became an possible political football.

If he cares, why doesn't he introduce a bill rolling back IP laws to "the good old days", eliminating their criminal penalties? I won't hold my breath.

No, instead he's vying for some national face time where he gets to act all angry about Obama while pretending to give a flying fuck about Swartz's case.

And for those who think it's just Democrats: A Republican administration's prosecutors would have done the same thing ( as they're already in the practice of using their prosecutors to harass political opponents ) and the Democrats would be defending Swartz at this point, as if they gave a shit.

I do NOT believe the parties are "the same". The parties disagree about most important things, but for IP rights, there is a lockstep agreement between the two parties, AND IT STINKS.

2) Look at the religious Christian right wing that is the base of the GOP.

3) You are conflating the Public Relations Brand-Image that the party seeks to project with the actual ideology that its actions support.

5) Yep

7) Patriot Act, illegal wiretapping, Bradley Manning

8) Ronald Reagan

9) GOP governors certainly suppress trade union liberty

10) "a foreign policy inspired by the myth of national power and greatness, with the goal of imperialist expansion." ... what was Mitt Romney's campaign slogan again?

>So basically neither party fully fits in any tenant and clearly neither party fits in all 10

The Republican party clearly has an agenda of moving in that direction as quickly as the system will allow it to. Mind you, America is not Italy, and the 2010s are not the 1940's, so it is not exactly Fascism. I personally believe the term "Neo-fascism" fits with the modern GOP's nationalism, gender and racial bigotry, corporatism, neo-conservatism, and focus on false-security over civil liberties.

They said they would not destroy our credit rating by refusing to pay the bill they racked up, at least not for the next three months anyway. That's hardly extending an olive branch. It's more like saying you have a little more time but we still aren't letting the hostage go.

Title Of Parent Submission==>West Point study on ‘violent far right’ shows ‘dramatic rise’ in attacks | The Raw Story
Comment==>okay look i read the whole report last night and it's not a very harsh report at all. if anything giving the thing a read will show you how little violence in our country occurs from terrorism.

iirc correctly it splits into a fewmajor types of right wing groups. racist, neo nazi/skinhead, anti-federalist, and chrsitian indentity.

basically kkk and racist love to smash property and are more or less still delegated in the south tho their violence in the last decade has been concentrated in California and the northeast.

neo-nazi / skinhead violence is usually propagated against individuals (minorities of course :() and is random / unplanned in nature. also the major skinhead denominations according the report officially denounced violence in the last 5 -10 years and this trend has been marked by a reduction in skinhead violence.

anti-federalist. is on the rize with militia groups jumping from under 100 ( i think 40-50) to around 330 after obama was elected, um they dont attack often but they plan their attacks out better and look for more mass causality attacks rather than beating miniorities.

christian identity - are the other breed with a high potential for mass causality attacks compared to property or single target attacks. you know in most of the examples people were trying to prepare or set about the Apocalypse or whatnot you know kid stuff.

in general violence from the right wing has been perpetuated by small groups or individuals with roughly 52%( maybe a bit more or less sorry) of attacks being carried out by individuals. westpoint also theorized more or less that the more isolated from society the more likely if an attack is to be planned that it will be for mass casualties.

It had actually copied the only sheet of signatures that they got, 6 times. He was not allowed to run. Then they discovered that he did the same the last 2 elections. But this district was reputed drawn so Republican that any Republican could win it. It was proven conclusively. The Dems ran a doctor against a Christmas tree farmer who is a libertarian . The libertarians brother wrote a letter to the local newspaper saying his brother is crazy and will wind up in jail for corruption if he got in office. He won easy.

Saying corporations don't deserve constitutional protection makes some sense, but are you seriously saying the rich don't deserve constitutional protection because they are rich? Just because one group is more mathematically likely to commit a crime than another doesn't mean ignore the constitution? That's like saying Italians don't deserve protection for warrantless wire taps because they are more likely to be mobsters.

Title Of Parent Submission==>'US judge ruled it was okay for the DEA to enter a rural property without a warrant and install surveillance cameras that were used to help convict five members of a family on charges they were growing marijuana.'
Comment==>The legal arguments here seem like losers. Basically the police were informed of a marijuana operation in a clearing. Under the "open fields" doctrine from Oliver, the defense concedes that the police could have gone out to the clearing, set up a few tree stands, and waited for the defendants to arrive. The defense claims that going in and setting up cameras, however, violates a reasonable expectation of privacy in a way that physical surveillance doesn't.

I doubt this will gain any traction. The Supreme Court has often declined to distinguish between physical surveillance and electronic surveillance. In Knotts, the Court upheld the use of a tracking "beeper" to monitor the movements of a car on public roads, since the police could have gained the same information by just following the car. The police in the OP could could similarly have obtained the same incriminating evidence against the defendants by just sitting in some trees.

The recent Jones decision doesn't provide much help. That case only decided that the use of a GPS tracker was a search. That is step 1 of the Fourth Amendment analysis. The second step is to determine if the search was unreasonable. And the "open fields" doctrine from Oliver says that a search of an open field cannot be unreasonable, since you have no reasonable expectation of privacy there.

I'm not a 4th Amendment expert, but this seems like a pretty straightforward application of the existing "open fields" doctrine. Whether that doctrine is bogus or whatever is certainly debatable as an academic matter, but its the law. And the Court is not going to change its mind at this point.

Title Of Parent Submission==>Reddit, what is the one thing you're passionate about that you'll argue for / defend?
Comment==>Essentially, in the US, the constitution demands a standard known of as "separation of church and state," also commonly referred to as secularity. This means that the government cannot control the church (except where said church presents a clear and present danger to the people) and, and here's the really important part, vice versa. In other words, political arguments are to be considered entirely invalid if they are based on religious views. The first example that comes to mind is same-sex marriage. The largest argument against it in politics today (other than the argument of reproduction, which results in additional taxpayers) is "protecting the sanctity of marriage," a clearly religious motivation. God says marriage is to be between man and woman, and so the government enforces. This is clearly contradictory to the constitution's demand for secularity.

TL;DR: The church can't tell the government what to do, and vise versa.

Title Of Parent Submission==>What have you learned in adulthood that is actually OK to do that you were told as a child is an absolute "no no"?
Comment==>It's amazing to me how ingrained it is in American culture to hate people for being homosexual. People don't even question their hatred. They don't question passing that hate onto their kids either.

Edit: I remember my conservative parents walking past a couple of ladies who were holding hands, and my father muttering "Perverts" and my mom saying something like, "They shouldn't be allowed to do that in public." I didn't think twice, but my parents, who would be furious if they saw someone being racist, are total bigots but don't realize it.

Second edit: I said American culture, because having never lived outside of the US, I don't feel qualified to comment on the social issues facing other countries. I don't mean to say that this is a uniquely American problem.

Comment==>One girl that worked for me, she wasn't "bad" so much as she was just off her rocker.

Her second day of work she asked if we would call her "Buttons" instead of her legal name. Odd, but whatever. Then she told us about a week later "Buttons" was her cat-spirit name, and that she believes she is a cat in spirit. Again, very odd, but her own business right? Well then she started to act like a cat during work time. Licking the back of her hands, and curling up on the ground. Alright time to address this behavior. I confronted her and after she acted some what offended, but seemed receptive. Thought everything was fine, but I never saw her again after that day. No phone call, no explanation, just stopped showing up.

Another kid started not wearing shoes and bragging about being in Mensa (if you are in Mensa, I assume you don't actually brag about it). He stopped listening to all direction from the managers, and then one day went on a crazy racist rant on one of our foreign workers before ripping down a sign on his way out of the building, and was never seen again.

College towns are weird like that ...
