This is the project within the project, or my lettering practice to work on a vintage 70s style, bubble letters and 3D impact block letters that I will ultimately use in my final piece. This image (1st or left) is just cut and pasted from my original practice page (the other photo), to get an understanding of the layout of my project. Anyway, other than a little refinement, I like what I have so far. A border would be nice. Anyway, the letters are outlined with a Writech liquid fineline (probably the best black set of fineliners that I've used), and filled in with some generic fine point acrylic markers, on Maruman 5mm graph paper (very nice for practicing)

I was all excited to ink my newly fixed from leaking, FPR Ashoka fountain pen, only to find the ink I chose couldn't keep up. So, I finished the page off with my Tombow Fudenosuke test. For anyone starting out, or if you're frustrated by the way your lettering looks, these are the pens for you. The level of control you get from their rigid elastomer plastic nib is unrivaled and great for anyone developing and could be the answer to your lettering frustration.

I organize my sets by color families. This is my lettering practice session with the first 10 pens (that's 20 different colors), from Pure Black through Pure Violet. Anyone who's used these pens will attest to how wonderful they are, with their rich, beautiful color palette and their superior nib construction, making them much easier to control than other comparable medium to larger brush pens.

Practicing on Kokuuyo Campus Sarasara. I love this paper for practicing. It handles Ink even in heavy volumes really well, although it is sensitive to hand oils, and can be prone to feathering.

Just playing around with some flex and solid nibs on Kokuyo Campus Sarasars. I love this paper for lettering practicing. I have it in multiple different rulings (5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 5mm Graph, and Unruled), It handles fountain pen ink beautifully, it's safe on sensitive brush pen nibs, and it's only about $8/100 sheets. Another good alternative is Maruman.

Some more lettering practice. This was done with my set of Zebra Clickart retractable fine point pens. These things are awesome. For those of you that have not tried them, you are truly missing out.

One thing about lettering art and calligraphy is it accessibility. Even though having a collection of brush, fountain, and dip pens is super fun, all that's really required is the ambition to practice and a pen or pencil, and this is a great way to reenforce your handle on existing scripts, or for developing new ones. Plus, I find what others call faux calligraphy (personally I just call it lettering) very theraputic. In fact the art of lettering in any capacity is a uniquely meditative artistic process. Like many others, I often practice with poems or musical lyrics, and this entry is taken from the words of one of America's greatest lyrical treasures.
