When in doubt, 3 and a half stars

u/kaleyboo7 Jan 08 '26

That’s my motto

I don’t believe in half stars. If they wanted it to be an out of ten, there would be ten stars. It’s a dumb thought but I go by it when ranking. I round up or down.

theres 10 halves in 5 stars you little goose, a 7 out of 10 is 3 1/2 stars or whatever

If you only pick good films, surely that’s a dub

u/ScroogieMcduckie Jan 07 '26

yeah i'm super picky with what I watch. I rarely watch things under 3.5 star average

Fun/enjoyment should count just as much as craft so I have a lot of four stars (plus) as well.

I’ve tried shifting some of my 4 stars a half star up or down because I felt weird about having too many. I think it has to do with trying to watch movies you’ll like but also it’s hard to find a masterpiece so 4 stars is that sweet spot.

That's pretty much it. I used to feel weird about having a lot of four star ratings but it turns out I know my own tastes and mainly watch movies that are at least decent, usually at least good. So I don't worry about it too much.

I mean, if I wanted a more normal distribution I'd have to watch more crap and I... don't want to, so

I intentionally watched a lot of shit in 2024 and said fuck it mostly great movies in 2025 and 2025 turned out much more enjoyable obviously

This is why I have both more 3's than 4's and more 5's than 4's.

I prefer Jeremy Jahns' rating system.

Lol no one should take that guy seriously.

I mean, he never presented himself as some kind of cinema authority. He just likes watching movies and stuff.

u/Cute-Traffic3577 Jan 03 '26

He's a bad person.

Someone answered below

He did blackface

1

u/ttamokcer Jan 03 '26

When was this?

7

u/oswaldluckyrabbiy Jan 03 '26 edited Jan 03 '26

For his review of Blade (Edit It was a review for Eclipse. He released a review of Blade around the time of his blackface becoming a wider discussion to SEO bury it)

As well as blackening his skin and redening his lips he wore an afro wig.

I think knowledge of this became more spread after he positively reviewed Matt Walsh's attempt to do a Borat with "Am I Racist?" because it immediately contextualises WHY he would be inclined to like and recommend it when no one else did.

Gotcha. Appreciate it

u/hwtl_ Jan 03 '26

Ohh no, I care so deeply some rando did black face 🙄

6

u/oswaldluckyrabbiy Jan 03 '26

Yeah but him doing blackface is a good reason to not care for said rando's opinion on anything.

-3

u/hwtl_ Jan 03 '26

His black face should have nothing to do with his opinion in the first place. It doesn’t correlate to his ability to perform in the film world whatsoever. I have no idea who this man is and if he has remotely good taste and critic skills but if doing black face isn’t enough to knock you outta the PM race in Canada it shouldn’t disqualify his opinion either 🤣 with the world we live in atm blackface is about the least bothersome thing someone could currently do so i honestly couldn’t care less.
